  • This is the original 1994 Wilks coefficient — a fifth-order polynomial in bodyweight with the 500 multiplier. It is one of four scores in circulation and they do not agree: Wilks-2 (2020) refits the polynomial and uses a 600 multiplier, DOTS is a different fit again, and IPF GL Points replaced Wilks as the IPF's own metric in 2020. A number is only comparable against another number from the same formula.
  • The score normalises a total against bodyweight so lifters in different classes can be ranked on one list. That is all it does. It is not a percentile, not a standard, and not a statement about how strong you are for your training age.

What your result means

The score is your total multiplied by a coefficient derived from your bodyweight. That coefficient is the whole idea: it scales a 60 kg lifter's total and a 120 kg lifter's total onto one axis, so a meet can be ranked without being ranked by size.

The label matters as much as the number. This is the original Wilks — Robert Wilks's 1994 fifth-order polynomial in bodyweight, with the 500 multiplier — and it is one of four scores currently in use. Wilks-2, published in 2020, refits the polynomial on more recent championship data and uses a 600 multiplier. DOTS is a different fit again. IPF GL Points replaced Wilks as the IPF's own metric in 2020.

They do not agree, and they are not meant to. A score is only comparable against another score from the same formula, which is why a bare Wilks figure quoted with no version is a number that cannot be checked — the most common way this goes wrong is comparing a 2015 leaderboard against a calculator that has quietly moved on.

What the number is not is a statement about how strong you are for your age, your training history, or the general population. It normalises for bodyweight and for nothing else. It is a ranking device built from competition data, and outside that context it says less than it appears to.

How it is calculated

Score = total × 500 ÷ (a + b·x + c·x² + d·x³ + e·x⁴ + f·x⁵) where x is bodyweight in kilograms and the coefficients differ by sex. What it assumes

  • Bodyweight and total are both in kilograms, and the total is the sum of the three competition lifts. Feeding a single lift in produces a number the formula will happily return and nobody can interpret.
  • The coefficients were fitted to elite competition data from the early 1990s. That is what the curve describes, and it is why the score behaves less well at bodyweights and totals far outside the range it was built on.
  • It normalises for bodyweight only. Not height, not limb length, not age, not equipment, not whether the meet was tested.
  • Sex enters as two entirely separate coefficient sets rather than as an adjustment factor, which is why the two curves are not parallel and why male and female scores are comparable only in the loose sense that both were scaled to their own population.

Units and rounding

  • Bodyweight in kilograms, total in kilograms, score to one decimal place.
  • The score is dimensionless. It is not kilograms, not a percentage and not a percentile, and the decimal place is precision rather than accuracy.
  • There is no unit conversion offered. Pounds entered here will produce a large, meaningless number, because the polynomial is fitted in kilograms and cannot detect that its input is not.

Worked example

A man weighing 83 kg with a 470 kg competition total.

  1. The denominator is evaluated at x = 83 using the men's coefficients
  2. Score = 470 × 500 ÷ that denominator
  3. = 313.7 on the original 1994 formula
  4. For contrast, a woman at 63 kg with a 300 kg total scores 322.2

313.7, and the two examples together make the point of the coefficient: a 300 kg total scores higher than a 470 kg one, because the formula is answering a question about bodyweight-adjusted performance rather than about absolute load. You may or may not find that reasonable; either way, it is what the formula does.

Limitations

  • It is not a strength standard and not a percentile. The score does not tell you where you sit among lifters at your level, because it was built to rank a meet rather than to describe a population.
  • The 1994 fit is old, and that is the substantive criticism of it. Wilks-2 exists specifically because the original was found to have drifted against modern competition data, particularly at the extremes of bodyweight, and the IPF moved to its own metric in 2020.
  • Scores from different formulas cannot be compared, and nothing on a leaderboard is obliged to say which one it used. If a number from elsewhere does not match the one here, the first thing to check is the formula, not the arithmetic.
  • It says nothing about how the lifts were performed. Raw or equipped, tested or untested, judged to competition depth or not — a total is a total to the coefficient.
  • Outside powerlifting it transfers badly. It was fitted to squat, bench and deadlift totals, and applying it to any other measure of strength is using a tool on a job it was not shaped for.

What to do next

  • Note which formula alongside the score, every time you record it. A number without its version is not comparable to anything, including your own score from last year.
  • If you are comparing against a specific federation's leaderboard, use that federation's current metric. The IPF has used GL Points since 2020, so a Wilks figure will not line up with an IPF ranking.
  • Track your total in kilograms as the primary number and the score as a secondary one. The total is what training changes; the score also moves when your bodyweight moves, which makes it a poor progress metric on its own.
  • If you have not competed, estimate the total from your best confirmed singles rather than from gym maxes at questionable depth, since the score inherits whatever the total was worth.

Which Wilks formula does this use?

The original, published by Robert Wilks in 1994 — a fifth-order polynomial in bodyweight with the 500 multiplier and separate coefficient sets for men and women. The result names it for that reason, because a bare Wilks score in 2026 is ambiguous between at least two formulas.

What is the difference between Wilks and Wilks-2?

Wilks-2, from 2020, refits the same shape of polynomial on more recent championship data and uses a 600 multiplier rather than 500. It exists because the original had drifted against modern results, particularly at the lightest and heaviest bodyweights. The two produce different numbers from identical lifts, and neither is a correction of the other in the sense of being convertible.

Is DOTS the same thing?

No. DOTS is a separate coefficient fitted independently, not a version of Wilks, and it produces its own scale. It is common in the sport now, which is part of why quoting a score without naming the formula has become a real problem rather than a pedantic one.

Why did the IPF stop using Wilks?

It moved to IPF GL Points in 2020, calibrated on its own championship data. That makes GL the right number for an IPF context and a poor one outside it, which is roughly the trade every one of these formulas makes: the more tightly a coefficient is fitted to one population, the less it travels.

Is a Wilks of 300 good?

This page will not answer that, and the refusal is deliberate. Calling a score good requires a population to compare it against, and the estate removed its strength-standard bands because the ones it was publishing were unsourced and wrong. What can be said plainly is that 300 on the 1994 formula is a competitive-level score, and that where it sits among lifters like you is not something a coefficient can tell you.

Can I use it for a single lift?

You can enter one, and the formula will return a number, and that number means nothing. The coefficient was fitted against three-lift competition totals; a bench-only figure run through it is not a bench Wilks, it is an uninterpretable result of a valid calculation.

The coefficient normalises for bodyweight. It does not normalise for depth.
