What your result means

The headline carries the standard you selected — estimated paused bench press 1RM, or touch-and-go, or competition. That label is doing real work. Touch-and-go and paused are not two versions of one lift, they are two lifts, and the number from one does not describe the other.

Reps left in reserve are folded in before anything else. Three reps with a fourth still there is treated as a set of four, because the equations describe a set that ended when the bar stopped moving. Under-report the reserve and the estimate comes back low.

The working weight for your chosen rep target is the number most people actually came for. Nobody opens a bench calculator to admire a single. They open it because there are five sets to load on Monday and they want to know what goes on the bar.

How it is calculated

Epley and Brzycki averaged, with reps in reserve added to the rep count first

Effective reps = reps entered + reps left in reserve. Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + effective reps ÷ 30). Brzycki: 1RM = weight × 36 ÷ (37 − effective reps). The estimate is the mean of the two. Working weight for N reps = mean of (estimate ÷ (1 + N ÷ 30)) and (estimate × (37 − N) ÷ 36) — the same average, inverted, so the working weight and the estimate cannot disagree.

What it assumes

  • One standard held from the first rep to the last. Three touch-and-go reps finished with a paused fourth is not a set this tool can read, and it is the most common way a bench estimate gets quietly contaminated.
  • The execution standard changes the label and nothing else. No percentage is deducted for a pause and none is added for a bounce, because no published figure supports one — the size of that gap is individual, and a number invented here would be worse than no number.
  • The arithmetic is the same arithmetic the general 1RM tool uses, on purpose. Reps at a given percentage do vary between exercises, and Nuzzo's meta-regression published separate bench and leg-press tables for that reason. But Shimano's group found the differences between lifts were much less pronounced at 80 to 90% of max — the region a 1RM estimate is taken from — so a bench-specific equation would be dressing up noise as precision.
  • The reserve count is honest. It is the one input here that nobody can check for you, and it is the one that moves the answer most.

Units and rounding

  • Weight in kilograms; the estimate and every load below it return in kilograms.
  • Reps and reps in reserve are both whole numbers, and they are summed before any equation runs.
  • The working-weight target is a rep count you pick. The 90 / 80 / 70% rows stay fixed at 3, 8 and 12 reps whatever you pick.

Worked example

A paused set on the bench: 90 kg for 3, with an honest admission that a fourth rep was there.

  1. Reserve folds in first: 3 reps + 1 in reserve = 4 effective reps
  2. Epley: 90 × (1 + 4 ÷ 30) = 90 × 1.1333 = 102 kg
  3. Brzycki: 90 × 36 ÷ (37 − 4) = 90 × 36 ÷ 33 = 98.2 kg
  4. Average: (102 + 98.2) ÷ 2 = 100.1 kg, labelled as a paused bench press 1RM
  5. Working weight for 5 reps: mean of (100.1 ÷ 1.1667) and (100.1 × 32 ÷ 36) = 87.4 kg
  6. 90% = 90.1 kg · 80% = 80.1 kg · 70% = 70.1 kg

About 100.1 kg paused. Enter the identical set as a flat 3 with nothing in reserve and the tool returns 97.1 kg instead — three kilos of estimate resting on one honest answer, and it is the lower figure most lifters end up programming from.

Limitations

  • It labels standards, it does not convert between them. A touch-and-go set gives a touch-and-go estimate and stays there, because nobody can tell you what your own bounce is worth in kilograms.
  • Setup is invisible to it, and on the bench setup is large. Grip width, arch, leg drive and where on the ribcage the bar touches all change what you can press, and a set from a setup you no longer use is not describing the lift you are about to train.
  • A spotter changes the number without changing the strength. A touch you barely noticed still finished the rep. Enter sets you completed alone, or with hands that genuinely stayed off the bar.
  • Nothing here knows where the set sat in your session. A fifth top set after heavy incline work estimates lower than the same lift fresh, and both numbers are true answers to different questions.
  • An estimate is not permission to attempt the single. A maximal bench needs pins set to catch a failed rep or a spotter who knows how to take one, and this is the lift where getting that wrong leaves the bar on your chest.

What to do next

  • Pick one standard and stay on it. Paused is the more useful default: it is the number that transfers to a platform and to a programme, and it does not drift on the days your bounce gets sloppy.
  • Write the standard down next to the load. "Bench 100 × 3" means nothing in six weeks. "100 × 3 paused, 1 in reserve" is a measurement you can repeat and compare.
  • If the working weight for eights feels heavier in your hands than the number says it should, the set you entered was further from failure than you thought. Re-enter it with a reserve rep and use the smaller answer.
  • Before you build a training block on the estimate, put one top single on the bar with a spotter and see whether it matches. On the bench that check costs one set, and it is worth more than re-running the calculator.

Should I enter a touch-and-go set or a paused one?

Enter what you actually did — the tool labels the result either way. If you have a choice about which set to test with, make it paused. It removes the variable that changes most between good days and bad ones, and it is the number a programme and a platform both understand.

How much lower is a paused bench than a touch-and-go bench?

Lower, and nobody can give you a percentage. The gap depends on your arch, your chest, how hard you bounce and how long the pause is, and no published figure covers that spread. Press a heavy single each way a few weeks apart and you will have your own answer, which is the only one worth having.

Why does the bench get its own calculator if the equations are identical?

Because reps at a given percentage genuinely do vary between exercises — Nuzzo's meta-regression published separate bench and leg-press tables for that reason — but Shimano's group found those differences were much less pronounced around 80 to 90% of max, which is exactly where a 1RM estimate is taken. Inventing a bench equation would be fake precision. What really differs on the bench is what counts as a rep, so that is what this page asks about.

What does the reps-in-reserve field actually change?

It lengthens the set before the maths runs. Entering 3 reps with 1 in reserve estimates from a set of 4, which at 90 kg is the difference between 97.1 kg and 100.1 kg. The longer the set and the further from failure it was, the bigger that correction gets.

Do I need to bench to failure for a good estimate?

No, and the reserve field exists so that you do not have to. Failure on the bench means a loaded bar stopping on your chest, which needs pins or a spotter to be a routine event rather than an emergency. Leave a rep, report it honestly, and the arithmetic handles the rest.

My gym bench is higher than my competition bench. Which one is my max?

Both, of different lifts. A competition press is paused motionless on the chest and started on a referee's command, so it is always the smaller of the two and always the one that counts on a platform. Keep both if you like — just never programme from one and claim the other.

The estimate is only ever as honest as the pause.
