Four numbers behind every offer
| Number | The question | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total paid | What will I pay in total over the minimum term, fees included? | The headline saving is only one part of it |
| Price afterwards | What is the price once the offer period ends, and at renewal? | You may spend more months at this price than at the offer price |
| Lock-in | How many months am I committed to, and what does leaving early cost? | A longer commitment is often the price of a lower rate |
| What is left out | Which areas, hours or services does the offer exclude? | An exclusion you need costs you extra every month |
RPM lists its ways to join on its offers page and confirms whether any offer is running when you enquire. That conversation is the moment to use these questions.
Check the end date, and what actually ends
An offer needs a real end date. Phrases like ends soon or only this week are not dates, and an offer that restarts every week was never going to end.
Ask two questions. On what date does this price stop being available? And on what date does the offer price stop applying to me? They are different dates. You might have until the end of the month to sign, then pay the offer price for three months before the normal price begins. Write both down.
Gym offers in Abu Dhabi tend to come round at similar points each year: Ramadan and Eid, National Day, the return from summer in September and the New Year. Miss one and another usually follows, so a deadline on its own is no reason to sign today.
Work out the total cost after the offer
Put every option on the same footing: the total for twelve months, using the normal monthly price as the unit. Call it M.
| Option | How it works | Twelve-month total |
|---|---|---|
| Offer A | First three months at half price, then M a month, with a 12-month minimum | 1.5M + 9M = 10.5M |
| Offer B | Joining fee waived, M a month, with a 12-month minimum | 12M, and the waiver only helps if you would have paid the fee |
| Offer C | Two extra months at no charge on a 12-month term paid upfront at 12M | 12M for 14 months, worth it only if you stay all 14 |
| No offer | 0.9M a month, rolling, with one month's notice | 10.8M, and you can leave |
On paper, Offer A is the cheapest over twelve months. The rolling option costs a little more but lets you leave at any point with notice, which matters if your job, your lease or your summer plans are uncertain. Offer C only wins if you would have stayed fourteen months anyway. For a full side-by-side, use the membership value worksheet.
Lock-in: what you give up for the lower price
- A longer minimum term. Twelve or twenty-four months is a long time if your job in Abu Dhabi might end.
- Payment upfront, which you may not get back if you leave early.
- No freeze during the offer period, which hurts if you travel in the summer.
- Automatic renewal at the full price, sometimes for another full term.
- An early-exit charge that wipes out the saving.
Ask for each of these in writing. If the answer to any one of them would be a problem for you, the offer may cost more than the normal price.
Waived fees and other sweeteners
| Sweetener | What it is really worth | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Waived joining fee | The fee itself, but only if you would have paid it | What does the joining fee normally cover? |
| Extra months at no charge | Added at the end, so only worth something if you stay | When are they added, and do they survive a freeze? |
| Bundled personal training | Worth something if you would book coaching anyway | How many sessions, with whom, and when do they expire? |
| Guest passes or kit | Usually small | Can I take a lower price instead? |
What the offer leaves out
- Sections: does it cover the women-only section, if the club has one?
- Hours: is it restricted to off-peak times, or does it exclude weekends?
- Rooms and studios: are recovery rooms, studios or classes left out?
- Coaching: is an induction or a programme part of the deal, or extra?
- Sites: for clubs with more than one location, which ones does it cover?
Any exclusion you would have to pay to get back belongs in the total cost.
Get it in writing, and walk away from pressure
Before you pay, ask for a message or document that states the offer price, the dates it starts and stops, the minimum term, the price afterwards, what is excluded and how to cancel. Screenshots of WhatsApp messages are better than nothing. A promise made at the desk that never reaches the contract is not part of the deal.
Pressure to sign on the spot is a reason to slow down. A gym that is confident in its offer will let you take the terms away and read them. The contract checklist covers every term worth checking before you sign.
Questions, answered.
Is a pre-opening offer worth it?
It can be, but you are paying for a club you cannot inspect. Ask what happens if the opening is delayed, whether you can get a refund, and when your term actually starts.
Should I wait for an offer around Ramadan or National Day?
If you are in no hurry, perhaps. Run the same sums on whatever you are offered then, because a lower first-term price that locks you in for longer is not always cheaper.
Can I negotiate the terms of an offer?
You can ask. A shorter term, a freeze included or a lower price in place of extras are all fair requests. Get whatever you agree in writing.
What if the price drops after I join?
Ask before you sign whether existing members move to a lower price if one appears later. If they do not, the total cost and the lock-in matter more than the timing.
Does RPM have an offer at the moment?
Ask the team. RPM confirms prices, and whether any offer is running, when you enquire, so use the questions on this page when you do.
