What your result means

The percentage is an estimate from circumferences, not a measurement of your tissue. The US Navy equation infers fat from the relationship between girths and height, which works because fat distributes predictably enough across a population — and works less well the further you sit from that population.

The kilogram figures are usually more useful than the percentage. Lean mass is what training and protein are there to protect, and watching it hold while fat mass falls is a far better read on a diet than the percentage alone.

Where this differs from BMI is worth stating plainly: BMI can't distinguish muscle from fat at all, while this at least attempts to. Neither is a substitute for the other, and both are screening estimates rather than diagnoses.

How to read the categories

How it is calculated

US Navy circumference method (Hodgdon & Beckett, 1984)

Men: %fat = 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) − 450 Women: %fat = 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) + 0.221 × log₁₀(height)) − 450 Lean mass = weight × (1 − %fat ÷ 100)

What it assumes

  • The equations were developed on US Navy personnel and validated against hydrostatic weighing; accuracy outside a similar population is lower.
  • Fat is assumed to distribute in a typical pattern for your sex. Unusual distribution, including a very muscular torso or a large waist with slim limbs, pushes the estimate off.
  • Hip circumference is used only in the female equation; the male equation ignores it entirely.
  • Weight isn't used to estimate the percentage at all. It's used only to convert that percentage into lean and fat mass.

Units and rounding

  • All circumferences in centimetres, height in centimetres, weight in kilograms.
  • Measure the waist at the navel, relaxed, at the end of a normal breath out. Not braced, not sucked in.
  • Measure the neck just below the larynx, and the hip at its widest point.
  • The result is clamped to a plausible physiological range, and measurements that would make the logarithm undefined (a neck larger than the waist, for instance) return no result rather than a nonsense percentage.

Worked example

A man 180 cm tall, 82 kg, with a 39 cm neck and an 88 cm waist.

  1. waist − neck = 88 − 39 = 49 cm, log₁₀(49) = 1.6902, log₁₀(180) = 2.2553
  2. Denominator = 1.0324 − (0.19077 × 1.6902) + (0.15456 × 2.2553) = 1.0585
  3. %fat = 495 ÷ 1.0585 − 450 = 467.6 − 450 = 17.6%
  4. Lean mass = 82 × (1 − 0.176) = 67.5 kg · Fat mass = 82 − 67.5 = 14.5 kg

About 17.6% body fat: roughly 67.5 kg of lean mass carrying 14.5 kg of fat.

Limitations

  • Expect an error of roughly ±3–4 percentage points against a laboratory method such as DEXA, and more if your build is unusual for the equations.
  • Tape measurement is the largest source of variance, and it is under your control. A centimetre of difference in where you place the tape moves the result by more than a week of training does.
  • The equation can't see visceral fat, which is the fat most associated with metabolic risk. A waist measurement carries information about that which a percentage doesn't.
  • Changes matter more than absolutes. If your technique is consistent, the direction of travel over eight weeks is meaningful even though the underlying number carries real error.
  • The category bands describe populations, not people. A percentage doesn't diagnose anything, and no individual can be told from it alone that they are healthy or unhealthy.
  • It isn't designed for use during pregnancy, and it hasn't been validated in children or adolescents.

What to do next

  • Measure under the same conditions each time: same time of day, before eating, same tape, same landmarks. Consistency buys you more accuracy than any equation change.
  • Track lean mass alongside the percentage. Lean mass holding steady through a diet is the strongest evidence your training and protein are doing their job.
  • Pair it with a waist measurement rather than with BMI. The two tell you different things; BMI and body fat largely tell you the same thing with different error.
  • Re-measure every four to six weeks. More often than that and you're reading tape-placement noise as body change.

How accurate is the US Navy body fat method?

It sits within roughly 3–4 percentage points of laboratory methods for most people, which is reasonable for a tape measure and free. It's least accurate at the extremes — very lean, very heavy, or unusually muscular builds.

How do I measure my waist correctly for this?

At the navel, standing relaxed, at the end of a normal exhale. Keep the tape level all the way round and snug without compressing the skin. Don't brace or pull your stomach in. That's the single most common way people get an implausibly low result.

Why does the calculator ask for hip measurement only sometimes?

The Navy equations differ by sex. The female version includes hip circumference because fat distribution patterns differ; the male version uses only neck, waist and height, so the hip field doesn't apply.

What is a good body fat percentage?

It depends on what you're training for, and the honest answer is that the bands above describe populations rather than prescribing targets. Athletes in weight-sensitive sports sit lower than people training for general health, and lower isn't automatically better — essential fat exists for a reason.

Body fat percentage or BMI — which should I use?

For understanding your own body composition, this is the more informative of the two, because BMI can't separate muscle from fat. BMI remains useful as a population screening tool. Neither replaces a waist measurement.

My body fat went up but I look leaner. What happened?

Almost always measurement variance rather than real change: tape placement, time of day, hydration and food in the gut all shift girths by a centimetre or more. Trust an eight-week trend measured consistently, not a single reading.

Fat mass down, lean mass held. That's the result worth measuring.
