What your result means

The headline is the calories in what you actually entered, and underneath it are protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre for the same list. Add a second food and everything moves; change a weight and it moves again. There is no daily target anywhere on this page, because the question it answers is what is in this food, not how much of it you should be eating.

Every food is stored per 100 g of edible portion, which is the form composition tables publish in, and the tool scales that to your weight. So 100 g of cooked chicken breast is exactly the 166 kcal the source lists, 150 g is 249, and 300 g is 498. That is the entire arithmetic — the work was in getting numbers worth scaling.

Each row shows where its figures came from, and with three tables in one catalogue that is not decoration. Raw chicken breast and cooked chicken breast are both real records with almost identical calories and wildly different protein, because cooking drives off water and concentrates what is left. The preparation beside each row is what tells them apart.

Where a row says a food publishes no fibre, that is the source being honest and the page passing it on. It does not mean zero fibre. Filling that gap with a nought would turn 'not measured' into 'measured as none', which is a different claim and a false one.

How it is calculated

Published per-100 g composition, scaled by weight and summed

For each row: value = published per-100 g figure × grams ÷ 100 Meal total = the sum of the rows Displayed energy is the figure the SOURCE publishes. It is not recomputed from the macros beside it. A nutrient the source does not publish stays null. It is left out of the total and the page says how many rows it could not see, rather than counting it as zero.

What it assumes

  • The weight you enter is edible portion — flesh without bone, fruit without stone. Composition tables are published on that basis, and a weight that includes what you throw away overstates the row.
  • The food you picked is the food you are eating. That sounds trivial and it is the largest error on this page: raw and cooked forms of the same ingredient sit next to each other in the list and differ by more than any rounding ever will.
  • Composition tables describe representative samples, not the specific item in your kitchen. Two chicken breasts differ; two batches of bread differ; the number is a good central estimate and not a measurement of your dinner.
  • Nothing is adjusted for cooking losses, added oil, or what the pan kept. If you fried it in something, that something is a separate row you have to add.

Units and rounding

  • Grams are the only quantity. There are no servings, cups or spoons, because a serving conversion for every food across three tables would be invented rather than sourced.
  • All composition is per 100 g of edible portion, in every source. That is what makes rows from three different tables addable in the first place.
  • A single row is capped at 2,000 g, so one mistyped weight cannot carry the total.
  • Repeat a food as often as you like — two rows of the same thing add, they do not replace each other.

Worked example

A post-training plate: 180 g of boiled brown rice and 150 g of cooked chicken breast.

  1. Brown rice, boiled — Bahrain 2011, record 1.3 — publishes 148 kcal per 100 g
  2. 180 g of it: 148 × 180 ÷ 100 = 266.4 kcal
  3. Chicken breast, cooked — USDA Foundation Foods, fdcId 331960 — publishes 166 kcal per 100 g
  4. 150 g of it: 166 × 150 ÷ 100 = 249.0 kcal
  5. Meal total: 266.4 + 249.0 = 515 kcal, with 52.8 g protein, 53.1 g carbohydrate and 6.8 g fat

515 kcal across two rows from two different tables, and the fibre line reads 1.4 g with a note that one of the two items publishes none. That note is the page working properly: the USDA chicken record carries no fibre figure, so it is left out rather than added as a zero. The plate almost certainly contains no meaningful fibre from chicken — but 'almost certainly' is not what a published table says, and this page only prints what one does.

Limitations

  • The catalogue is 97 foods, not the supermarket. These are whole foods and staples from three published tables; branded products, restaurant dishes and recipes are not in any of them, and none has been invented to fill the gap.
  • Raw and cooked are different foods and this is where most errors here will come from. Boiled brown rice publishes 148 kcal per 100 g and raw brown rice publishes 354, because raw rice has not yet absorbed its water. Weighing cooked rice against the raw row overstates it by more than double.
  • The three tables were built by different bodies at different times on different populations, and they do not always agree about the same food. IFCT's whole cow milk publishes 73 kcal per 100 g; the USDA's whole milk publishes 60. Neither is wrong — they are different milks, measured differently — and the source shown on each row is how you tell which one you picked.
  • Missing fibre is common and it is a real gap, not a rounding. Eleven of the catalogue's rows publish no fibre value, mostly dairy and meat, so a meal built from those returns a fibre figure that is a floor rather than a total.
  • Composition varies with everything the table cannot see — season, variety, feed, ripeness, how long something was cooked and how hard it was drained. A published figure is a central estimate for a food, not a measurement of yours.
  • This page does not tell you whether a meal is a good one. It has no target, no threshold and no verdict, because those need to know things about you that nothing here asked.

What to do next

  • Weigh things for a week rather than estimating, and then stop. The point is not to weigh forever; it is that a fortnight of weighing recalibrates your eye permanently, and most people are surprised by rice and oil in the same direction.
  • Check the preparation on the row before you trust the number. If you cooked it, pick the cooked row — and if there is only a raw row for that food, weigh it raw.
  • Add the oil. It is the single most-forgotten row on any food calculator: a tablespoon is around 14 g of a fat that publishes about 900 kcal per 100 g, so it is rarely a rounding error.
  • If you want a daily number to compare this against, that is a different tool. The calorie calculator sets a target; this one only says what is on the plate.

Where do these food values come from?

Three published composition tables: the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017, USDA FoodData Central Foundation Foods from the 2026-04-30 release, and the Food Composition Tables for the Kingdom of Bahrain, 2011. Every row keeps the release it came from and its record id inside that release, so any figure here can be looked up at the source rather than taken on trust.

Why does one row say it has no fibre value?

Because its source publishes none for that food. That is different from publishing a zero, and the page keeps the difference: an unpublished value is left out of the fibre total and counted in the note that says how many rows were missing. Writing 0 there would be inventing a measurement nobody took.

Should I weigh food raw or cooked?

Whichever the row says. The list carries both forms for several staples precisely because they are not interchangeable — boiled brown rice publishes 148 kcal per 100 g against 354 for raw — so the safe habit is to read the preparation on the row you picked and weigh to match it.

Why do two milks give different calories?

Because they are different milks in different tables. IFCT's whole cow milk is 73 kcal per 100 g at 4.5% fat; USDA's whole milk is 60 at 3.25%. Both are correctly published figures for the product each table sampled, and the source on the row is what tells you which one you are looking at. Picking the one that matches the carton in your fridge is the right move.

Why are the calories not exactly four times the protein plus nine times the fat?

Because the page shows the energy the source published, not an energy we worked out from the macros. Composition tables derive energy in ways that vary — some use factors specific to that food — and quietly replacing their figure with our own arithmetic would misattribute the number to them. The recomputation still runs as an integrity check; it just never reaches the screen.

Can I add a restaurant meal or a branded product?

No, and that limit is deliberate. None of the three tables carries branded or restaurant items, and estimating one would mean typing a number no source published. What the catalogue can do is let you build the components — bread, labneh, rice, chicken, oil — which for home cooking is usually closer than a guess at a finished dish.

How many foods are there, and can I search in Arabic?

Ninety-seven, and yes. The search box matches the English name, the Arabic label and a set of everyday aliases, so searching in Arabic reaches the same records as searching in English — and so do transliterations like gahwa and khubz. An alias is only a way in: it names a record that already exists and can never carry a value of its own.
