What your result means

Pace matters, but less than you would think. Across the whole realistic walking range — a slow stroll up to a very brisk 6 km/h — the cost per minute rises by about half, not by double. Walking is a narrow band of intensity, and no amount of striding turns it into a hard session.

Which means duration is the stronger lever, and that is the opposite of what most pages on this query say. Eighty minutes at an average pace beats an hour of walking as fast as you comfortably can. If you want the walk to count for more, the honest answer is usually to keep going, not to speed up.

Body weight is the other half. Walking is weight-bearing, so a 95 kg walker moving at the same speed for the same time is doing more work than a 60 kg one, and the estimate scales with that directly.

The figure is gross, not net. It includes the calories you would have burned sitting on the sofa for the same hour, which is roughly 60 to 90 of them. If you want the cost of the walk itself, subtract that.

How it is calculated

ACSM walking metabolic equation

VO2 (mL/kg/min) = 3.5 + (0.1 × speed) + (1.8 × speed × grade), speed in m/min kcal = VO2 × body weight kg ÷ 1000 × 5 kcal per litre of oxygen × minutes This page holds grade at zero; incline is the treadmill page's job.

What it assumes

  • The walk was steady. The equation describes continuous walking at one pace, not a stop-start wander round a mall with three coffee breaks in it.
  • The published equation is anchored between roughly 3 and 6 km/h. Every pace option here sits inside that range on purpose — above it you are jogging, and a different equation applies.
  • Five kilocalories per litre of oxygen is exact only when you are burning carbohydrate. Walking easily you are burning more fat, where the true figure is nearer 4.7, so the estimate runs a few percent high at the slow end.

Units and rounding

  • Weight in kilograms, duration in minutes, pace in km/h.
  • Distance is derived from pace and duration, so it will not match your phone exactly if your real pace varied.
  • A pace of zero or a duration of zero returns no result rather than a zero-calorie walk.

Worked example

A 78 kg man walks briskly for 50 minutes at about 5.5 km/h.

  1. Speed: 5.5 km/h = 91.7 m/min
  2. VO2 = 3.5 + (0.1 × 91.7) = 3.5 + 9.17 = 12.67 mL/kg/min
  3. That is 12.67 ÷ 3.5 = 3.6 MET
  4. kcal = 12.67 × 78 ÷ 1000 × 5 × 50 = 247 kcal
  5. Distance = 5.5 × 50 ÷ 60 = 4.6 km

About 247 kcal for the 50 minutes, or roughly 210 to 285 once you allow for the error in any estimate of this kind.

Limitations

  • Every model here has an error band of roughly 10 to 15%, and the page shows a range for that reason. A single number to the nearest calorie would be claiming a precision nothing in this chain has.
  • The 3.5 mL/kg/min resting anchor that MET values are built on overestimates real resting metabolism for most adults, and the overestimate is larger if you are heavier or older. Treat the figure as an upper-ish estimate rather than a measurement.
  • Terrain and surface are not inputs. Sand, a steep footbridge or a treadmill belt all change the cost, and only the treadmill version of that is captured elsewhere on the site.
  • Carrying or pushing something changes the answer and is not modelled. A pram, a heavy bag or a toddler on your shoulders is real load.
  • This is not a weight-loss projection. Walking off a specific number of kilos by arithmetic ignores that appetite and daily movement both adjust.

What to do next

  • If you want the walk to do more, add minutes before you add speed. The arithmetic favours it, and so does your ability to keep doing it.
  • Log the distance, not the calories. Distance is measured; the energy figure is inferred from it, and only one of those is worth tracking week to week.
  • If you want walking to become training rather than movement, incline is the lever that actually changes the intensity. Speed alone cannot take you far out of the walking band.
  • Pair this with a daily step count if you are trying to see where your movement actually sits.

How many calories does an hour of walking burn?

For most adults, somewhere between 200 and 400 for a steady hour, depending mainly on weight and pace. A 60 kg person strolling is near the bottom of that; a 95 kg person walking briskly is above the top of it.

Does walking faster burn more calories than walking longer?

Per minute the faster walk wins, but only by about half as much again across the whole walking range. Add twenty minutes instead of twenty percent more speed and you will usually come out ahead, which is not the answer most calculators give.

Why is this number different from my watch?

Watches usually estimate from heart rate or from steps, not from pace and weight, and most report net rather than gross. Different method, different assumptions, different number. Neither is a measurement.

Is walking enough to lose weight?

It helps, but the deficit is what drives fat loss and walking is a modest contributor to it. Its real value is that people keep doing it, which is not true of most harder cardio.

Should I count the calories I burn walking when I eat?

Generally no. Eating back an estimate with a 15% error band is how a deficit quietly disappears, and most daily activity is already inside your maintenance figure.

Does walking uphill make much difference?

A large one — gradient is the single biggest term in walking energy cost. A 10% incline at the same speed roughly doubles it. That version of the question is on the treadmill page, where incline is an input.
