The short answer, side by side
| Question | Kettlebell | Dumbbell |
|---|---|---|
| Where the weight sits | Below and behind the handle, offset from your hand | Evenly either side of your hand |
| Strongest uses | Swings, cleans, carries, goblet squats | Presses, rows, lunges, bench work |
| Weight steps | Often big jumps between bells | Usually smaller jumps |
| Learning curve | Fast lifts need some coaching | Most lifts feel familiar early |
| Grip | Thick handle that tests your grip | Easier to hold when heavy |
Both tools sit on RPM's functional floor, and dumbbells also fill the main training floor. Whether free weights count as real strength training is answered in learning free weights. This page is about choosing between the two shapes.
Offset load versus balanced load
A dumbbell's weight sits evenly around your grip, so it feels the same wherever you hold it. A kettlebell's weight hangs away from the handle. Held at the shoulder it rests on your forearm, and held upside down, by the handle with the bell above, it wobbles unless you grip and steady it. That offset changes the work even at the same weight.
A 2024 study had 28 young men press the same weight overhead three ways. The dumbbell drew more activity from the side deltoid and lower trapezius than the upside-down kettlebell or the normal kettlebell respectively, while the upside-down kettlebell drew more from the serratus anterior, a muscle around the ribs that moves the shoulder blade. The authors concluded that shoulder muscle activity varies with the type of press at the same load.
Offset loading shows in the trunk too. A 2016 study of the kettlebell swing found that swinging with one arm made the trunk muscles work unevenly, with the upper back muscles on the side opposite the bell working harder than on the same side. A single bell carried in one hand asks the same question of your trunk, which is why coaches use one-sided carries on purpose.
Ballistic lifts versus grinding lifts
Ballistic lifts move the weight fast and let momentum carry it: swings, cleans and snatches. Grinding lifts move it slowly under constant control: presses, rows, squats and lunges. The kettlebell's handle and its swing suit the first group, and a laboratory study found swing power greater than a back squat's and similar to a jump squat's. Dumbbells suit the second group, because a balanced weight is easier to steady through a slow rep.
| Lift | Type | Usual choice | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swing | Ballistic | Kettlebell | The handle and bell shape are built to swing between the legs |
| Clean to the shoulder | Ballistic | Kettlebell | The bell lands on the forearm in a stable rack |
| Goblet squat | Grinding | Either | Held at the chest, both work well |
| Bench or floor press | Grinding | Dumbbell | Balanced in the hand, with small steps to add load |
| Rows | Grinding | Dumbbell | Easy to hold heavy, with a neutral grip |
| Split squat and lunges | Grinding | Dumbbell | Hangs at your sides without swinging into the legs |
| Carries | Either | Either | Kettlebells for racked or overhead carries |
When each tool is the better choice
- Learning to produce power from the hips: a kettlebell, starting with the swing.
- Building pressing and rowing strength over months: dumbbells, because loads can rise in small steps. The ACSM position stand suggests adding 2 to 10 per cent once you can do one or two reps more than your target.
- Training one side at a time: either. The ACSM recommends both bilateral and unilateral exercises, and dumbbells are easier to hold for lunges and step-ups.
- Grip and trunk work: kettlebells, especially one-sided carries.
- Short on time or space: one or two kettlebells cover swings, squats, presses and carries in a small corner.
If a lift hurts a joint with one tool, stop that lift. Persistent pain, an injury or a medical condition is a matter for a doctor or physiotherapist.
What the strength research says
Head-to-head trials of kettlebells against dumbbells are scarce. The closest comparison in this guide's sources is a 2012 trial in 30 healthy men who trained twice a week with either kettlebells (swings and goblet squats) or barbell weightlifting with back squats. Both groups gained strength and power, but the barbell group gained more strength, with no difference in jump height.
Read that as a point about loading rather than a verdict on kettlebells: heavier loads that rise in small steps drive maximal strength, and dumbbells and barbells allow that more easily. For kettlebell technique itself, see the kettlebell basics guide.
A week that uses both
| Session | Kettlebell work | Dumbbell work |
|---|---|---|
| Day A | Swings to open, goblet squats | Bench press and one-arm rows |
| Day B | Cleans and presses, one-sided carries | Split squats and Romanian deadlifts |
Two sessions a week, with a rest day between, fits WHO's advice to strengthen all major muscle groups on two or more days a week. In Ramadan, keep the fast kettlebell work short and do it early in the session.
Kettlebells and dumbbells at RPM
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. Kettlebells and dumbbells sit in the functional area of the Mixed section, and the training floor photos show more dumbbells with benches and cable towers. The women-only Ladies section has its own strength equipment.
- Ask which kettlebell weights are available and how big the steps are between dumbbells in your range.
- Women: ask which kettlebells and dumbbells the Ladies section holds, and whether your tier covers the functional area.
- Coaching: coaches on the roster cover strength in both sections, and Engine is the tier that adds coached programming, with inclusions confirmed on enquiry.
- Book a free guided tour to see both racks at the hour you train.

Questions, answered.
Is a 16 kg kettlebell the same as a 16 kg dumbbell?
Same mass, different feel. The kettlebell's weight sits away from your hand, so presses and carries change, and the 2024 press study found the shoulder muscles worked differently at the same weight.
Can I swing a dumbbell?
You can, but its shape is awkward to hold at speed between the legs, which is why swings are usually taught with a kettlebell.
Are kettlebells harder on the wrists?
A poor rack lets the bell flip onto the back of the wrist. Learn the rack with a light bell, with the handle low in the palm, before pressing heavier ones.
If I can only use one, which should it be?
For general strength with steady progress, dumbbells. For power, grip and conditioning in one tool, a kettlebell. Many people end up using both.
