What your result means

What this measures is frame size. Wrist circumference relative to height is a reasonable proxy for skeletal width, because the wrist carries almost no fat or muscle — which is exactly why it's the site used.

The labels are ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph, because that's the language people search with. They come from William Sheldon's 1940 somatotype system, which classified physiques and then linked them to personality traits. The personality half was abandoned decades ago. The physique descriptions survived into fitness culture, largely detached from the research that produced them.

So read your result as a description of your skeleton, not a diagnosis of your metabolism. A narrow frame doesn't mean you struggle to gain weight, and a broad one doesn't mean you gain fat easily. Those are claims about energy balance, and a wrist measurement has no access to them.

How it is calculated

What it assumes

  • The wrist is measured at its narrowest point, just below the bony bump, with the tape snug. It's chosen because there is almost nothing there but bone, skin and tendon.
  • Frame size is treated as fixed in adulthood, which it broadly is. Nothing you do in a gym changes skeletal width.
  • The thresholds are conventional cut-offs from frame-size reference tables, not diagnostic criteria, and they place most adults in the middle category.

Units and rounding

  • Height and wrist both in centimetres. The index is a ratio, so consistent units are all that matters.
  • Wrist measurements outside 12-24 cm are rejected rather than classified.
  • Sex changes the thresholds, because skeletal proportions differ on average.

Worked example

A man of 183 cm with an 18.5 cm wrist.

  1. Index = 183 ÷ 18.5 = 9.9
  2. Men's mid-range band = 9.6 to 10.4
  3. 9.9 sits in the middle of it

Mid-range frame, which is where most adults land. Note what has and hasn't been established: his skeleton is average width for his height, and nothing at all is known about his metabolism, his training response or what he should eat.

Limitations

  • One measurement, one conclusion. Frame size is real; a metabolic type derived from it is not, and no evidence supports assigning calorie or macro targets by somatotype.
  • Sheldon's original system rated three components on a scale rather than sorting people into three boxes. Almost everyone is a mix, and the boxed version is a simplification that happened outside the research.
  • Most people read mesomorph. A classifier where the middle category absorbs the majority isn't telling you much about you specifically.
  • It has no view on body fat. Someone lean and someone carrying significant fat with the same wrist and height get the same label.
  • Training and nutrition should follow your goal, your current numbers and your measured progress. If a plan changes because of this result rather than because of those, the plan is being set by the wrong input.

What to do next

  • Take the frame reading for what it is — useful context for interpreting your weight, and nothing more. A broad frame carries more weight at the same body fat, which is worth knowing when a scale number surprises you.
  • Set calories from your maintenance level, not from a label. That's the input that actually differs between people, and it's measurable.

  • Track body fat percentage or waist circumference over eight weeks. Real feedback about how your body responds beats any classification of how it's supposed to.

Are body types real?

Frame size is real and measurable. The three-type system layered on top of it is a simplification of a 1940s classification whose main claim — that physique predicts temperament — was discarded. Physique varies continuously, and almost nobody is a pure type.

How do I know my body type?

Measure your wrist at its narrowest point and divide your height by it. That gives a frame-size index, which is what these calculators are actually computing when they report a somatotype.

Should ectomorphs and endomorphs eat differently?

Not because of the label. Calorie needs differ by body size, activity and training load, all of which are measurable directly — so measure them. Two people with the same somatotype can have maintenance levels several hundred calories apart.

Can I change my body type?

You can change your body composition substantially and your skeletal frame not at all. Someone with a narrow frame who trains and eats for years will look very different from their earlier self while their wrist measurement stays where it was.

Why does everyone seem to be a mesomorph?

Because the middle band is wide and most adults fall in it. That's a feature of how the thresholds were drawn rather than a finding about the population, and it's a good reason not to read much into a mid-range result.
