What your result means

The headline is your intake, not a verdict on it. Underneath sits the reference the published bodies actually give: 400 mg a day for healthy adults, from both the FDA and EFSA. Being under it is not a clean bill of health and being over it is not a diagnosis.

Read the wording of those references carefully, because it is doing real work. The FDA cites 400 mg as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults. EFSA concluded that 400 mg a day spread across the day does not raise safety concerns for the general healthy adult population. Neither says it is fine for you specifically, and neither is a target to hit.

The single-dose figure is separate and often the one people trip on. EFSA puts 200 mg in one sitting as not raising concerns for healthy adults — which a large pre-workout scoop can exceed on its own, before any coffee.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding carry a different reference at 200 mg a day from all sources. It does not inherit the general-adult figure, which is why this page asks rather than assuming.

How it is calculated

What it assumes

  • The serving values are typical rather than exact. Brewing method, bean, cup size and steep time all move them, and pre-workout products vary more than anything else on the list — a scoop can run from under 150 mg to over 350 mg.
  • The references describe healthy adults. They are not written for people with cardiac arrhythmias, anxiety disorders, on medication that interacts with caffeine, or for adolescents.
  • Caffeine from all sources counts, including tea, cola, chocolate, some painkillers and anything labelled as a fat burner. Totals get missed on the things people do not think of as coffee.

Units and rounding

  • Everything is milligrams of caffeine per day. Servings convert with the typical values above.
  • The single-dose figure is the largest amount in one sitting, not the daily total.
  • Zero intake returns zero rather than an error; the references still display, because that is what the page is for.

Worked example

Three brewed coffees across the morning, a pre-workout scoop before an evening session, no tea or cola.

  1. Coffee: 3 × 95 = 285 mg
  2. Pre-workout: 1 × 200 = 200 mg
  3. Daily total: 485 mg
  4. Against the general-adult reference of 400 mg: above it
  5. Largest single amount: 200 mg, at the EFSA single-dose reference

485 mg, above the 400 mg reference — driven almost entirely by the pre-workout, which on its own equals the single-dose figure. The evening timing is the other thing worth noticing.

Limitations

  • This compares an intake with a population reference. It does not assess you, and it cannot tell you what your own tolerance is.
  • Individual response to caffeine varies severalfold. Genetics affect how fast you clear it, habitual intake shifts sensitivity, and both change what a given dose does to you.
  • Caffeine interacts with medication and with several health conditions. If you take anything regularly, that question belongs with a pharmacist or doctor rather than a calculator.
  • Sleep is the effect most people underestimate and the hardest to self-assess. EFSA notes that around 100 mg close to bedtime is enough to affect sleep in some adults, and people who sleep badly rarely connect it to the afternoon coffee.
  • The serving estimates are the weakest part of the arithmetic. If you have a label, use it — a figure you read beats a figure this page assumed.

What to do next

  • If the total surprised you, look at what contributed most rather than at the total. It is usually one large source rather than many small ones.
  • Move the last dose earlier before you cut the amount. Timing is often the change that improves sleep without costing you the training benefit.
  • Check your pre-workout's label against what you assumed here. It is the single most variable product in the list and the most common reason a total runs high.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use the 200 mg reference and take the question to your doctor rather than to a tool.

How much caffeine is too much?

No published body answers that for an individual, which is why this page does not either. What exists is a reference: 400 mg a day is the figure the FDA and EFSA both cite for healthy adults, framed as an amount not associated with concerns for the population rather than a limit calculated for anyone.

Why doesn't this use my body weight?

Because no authority publishes a daily caffeine allowance per kilogram. EFSA does give a per-kilogram figure, but it describes a single dose, and turning it into a daily allowance is a real error — it is what this page used to do before it was rebuilt.

How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?

Around 95 mg for a typical brewed cup, but the range is wide. Espresso is roughly 63 mg a shot, tea near 47 mg a cup, a cola around 34 mg. Brewing strength and cup size move all of these, so treat them as a rough total rather than a measurement.

Is caffeine before training worth it?

It has reasonable support as a performance aid, which is a separate question from daily intake and is what the pre-workout page covers. The relevant point here is that a pre-workout dose is often the largest single amount in someone's day, and it counts towards the daily total like everything else.

How late is too late for coffee?

That depends on you more than on a rule, but the effect lasts longer than most people assume. EFSA notes around 100 mg close to bedtime is enough to disturb sleep in some adults, so if your sleep is poor, the afternoon cup is worth testing before you blame anything else.

What about pregnancy?

A different reference applies: 200 mg a day from all sources, which is half the general-adult figure and covers lactation too. Select that option and the page compares against it. It is still a population reference, and pregnancy is exactly the case where the conversation belongs with a doctor or midwife.

The pre-workout is usually the biggest number in the day.
