  • This is a screening category, not clearance to train. It describes the environment, not you.
  • The heat index assumes shade and light wind. In direct sun the heat burden is materially higher than the figure shown — the NWS notes it can feel up to about 15 °F hotter — and that is a limitation of the measure, not a correction you can add.
  • WBGT is the better measure for exercise because it also captures radiant heat and wind. If you can get a reading, use it instead.

What your result means

The category describes the air, not you. It is a screening band from the US National Weather Service heat index, and it is the same band whether the person reading it is a heat-adapted twenty-five-year-old or someone who landed from Europe on Tuesday. Nothing here clears anyone to train.

The heat index assumes shade and light wind, which is the assumption most likely to mislead you here. Step into direct sun and the strain is materially higher than the number shows — the NWS puts it as much as 15°F higher — and that is a limitation of the measure, not a correction you can add on. The same goes for still air.

The additional factors are listed rather than scored. Direct sun, a hard session, a long exposure and a lack of acclimatisation all raise heat strain, and there is no published way to combine them into one number. Anything that gave you Risk: 78 would be inventing the arithmetic.

Below about 27°C the table does not classify the conditions at all. That is an absence of a category, not a verdict — a hard hour in full sun at 26°C is still a hard hour in full sun.

How it is calculated

US National Weather Service heat index, with a WBGT input where available

Simple form: HI = 0.5 × (T + 61 + (T − 68) × 1.2 + RH × 0.094), T in °F That result is averaged with the temperature. Below 80°F the average is the answer. At or above 80°F the Rothfusz regression applies, plus the published low-humidity adjustment (RH under 13%, 80-112°F) and high-humidity adjustment (RH over 85%, 80-87°F). Categories: Caution 80-90°F · Extreme Caution 90-103°F · Danger 103-124°F · Extreme Danger 125°F and above.

What it assumes

  • Shade and light wind. Both assumptions fail on an open pitch at midday, and the index has no way to represent either failure.
  • The regression is a fit to Steadman's tabulated results and carries a stated error of about ±1.3°F, before any of the assumptions above are considered.
  • The four categories are the official set. There is deliberately no fifth band below Caution — the published table simply does not extend below 80°F, and third-party charts that add a 'safe' band below it are not following the NWS.
  • A WBGT figure is only ever shown when you supply a reading. It cannot be derived from temperature and humidity: the published models need wind speed, solar irradiance and a black-globe measurement as well.

Units and rounding

  • Temperature and WBGT are entered in Celsius; the heat index is reported in both Celsius and Fahrenheit because the categories are defined in Fahrenheit.
  • Relative humidity is a percentage from 0 to 100. Values outside that return no result rather than an extrapolation.
  • Duration is in minutes and is used only to flag long exposure, never to scale a number.

Worked example

An August afternoon in Abu Dhabi: 42°C, 55% relative humidity, a 45-minute run in direct sun, not heat acclimatised.

  1. 42°C = 107.6°F
  2. Simple form: 0.5 × (107.6 + 61 + (107.6 − 68) × 1.2 + 55 × 0.094) = 110.6
  3. Averaged with the temperature: (110.6 + 107.6) ÷ 2 = 109.1, which is above 80, so the regression applies
  4. Rothfusz regression at 107.6°F and 55%: about 151°F, which is 66°C
  5. 151°F sits above 125°F → Extreme Danger
  6. Factors listed alongside: direct sun, moderate session, not acclimatised

Extreme Danger on the screen, with three factors the screen cannot account for stacked on top of it. This is the condition the indoor floor exists for.

Limitations

  • This is a screening tool and not a medical assessment. It does not know your medications, your cardiovascular history, a pregnancy, or an illness last week — all of which change how heat affects a person far more than a few degrees of index does.
  • Heat illness is not a threshold effect that switches on at a category boundary. People have collapsed in Caution conditions and trained through Danger ones. The bands describe risk, not a line.
  • Acclimatisation takes roughly one to two weeks of repeated exposure and is lost faster than it is gained. The tool takes it as a factor; it cannot measure it.
  • Clothing, equipment and body composition all change heat exchange and none is an input here.
  • If you feel confused, stop sweating, get a headache or feel nauseated while training in heat, that is a reason to stop and get help immediately, not a reason to consult a calculator.

What to do next

  • In Gulf summer the useful decision is usually where, not whether. Moving a session indoors or to an hour after sunset changes the conditions more than any pacing adjustment does.
  • If you are training outdoors regularly through the heat, build the exposure gradually rather than arriving at full volume — acclimatisation is the one variable here you can actually change.
  • Get a WBGT reading if outdoor sessions are a regular part of your training. It is the measure written for people doing what you are doing.

At what temperature is it too hot to exercise outside?

There is no published temperature that answers that for an individual, and any tool giving you one is making it up. Heat strain depends on humidity, sun, wind, how hard you are working, what you are wearing and how adapted you are. The screen here tells you what the conditions are; the decision stays yours.

What is the heat index, exactly?

An apparent-temperature figure from the US National Weather Service: what the air feels like once humidity is accounted for, because sweat evaporates more slowly in humid air. It is computed for shade and light wind.

Why is WBGT better than the heat index for exercise?

Because it measures more of what actually loads you. The heat index only knows temperature and humidity and assumes shade. WBGT also captures radiant heat from the sun and the effect of air movement, which is why occupational and athletic guidance is written around it rather than around the heat index.

Why does this page not tell me whether the WBGT reading is acceptable?

Because the published thresholds are not written for you. They come from workplace exposure programmes with defined work-rest cycles and medical monitoring, or from supervised sport with a trainer and an emergency plan on site. They also vary by climate, so a figure derived in a temperate country would rule out most of an Abu Dhabi summer. Showing you a number honestly beats showing you a threshold that does not apply.

Can I just add 15 degrees for full sun?

No, and that is a common misreading. The NWS says full sunshine can increase the apparent heat by up to 15°F — an upper bound describing how badly the shade assumption can fail, not a constant to add. The real figure depends on the angle of the sun, cloud, surface and what you are wearing.

Does acclimatisation really make a difference?

A substantial one. Repeated exposure over one to two weeks improves sweat rate and cardiovascular stability in heat. It is also why someone who has trained through a Gulf summer and someone who arrived last week face genuinely different conditions at the same reading.

Four months a year, the answer is indoors.
