Your rotation is the billing cycle
Gyms sell by the month and the year. Your life runs in cycles: a hitch offshore or on site, then a block at home in Abu Dhabi. A standard membership charges for both halves, so the question is how to pay for the home blocks only, or as much of that as a gym will allow.
For what each tier covers, see RPM's membership options. This page is about the terms behind them. If your time away comes as irregular work trips rather than a fixed roster, the away-weeks worksheet for frequent travellers fits you better.
One cycle, in numbers
Find your roster. The figures are calendar arithmetic, rounded.
| Rotation | One cycle | Home blocks a year | Share of the year at home |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14/14 | 4 weeks | About 13 | About half |
| 21/21 | 6 weeks | About 9 | About half |
| 28/28 | 8 weeks | 6 or 7 | About half |
| 28/14 | 6 weeks | About 9 | About a third |
| 21/7 | 4 weeks | About 13 | About a quarter |
Take the travel days off each end of the home block. A crew change or a long flight is rarely a training day.
Every equal rotation leaves you home for half the year. What separates them is the length of each block, and that decides which ways of paying are open to you. A two-week hitch is shorter than many gyms' minimum freeze, while a four-week one may qualify.
Price one cycle, four ways
Use letters for the quotes you get: M for a month of membership, Z for each freeze, B for a block of access covering one home period, where a gym sells one, and V for a single visit. Sessions means the sessions you will really do in one home block.
| Way to pay | Cost of one cycle | Only works if | Ask the gym |
|---|---|---|---|
| Membership, paid straight through | M × months in one cycle | Always open to you | Nothing extra, but you pay for every hitch |
| Membership, frozen for every hitch | M × months at home, plus Z | The minimum freeze fits inside your hitch and the yearly limit covers every cycle | Can I freeze six or more times a year, booked from my roster? |
| A block of access per home period | B | The gym sells a short term that matches your block | Is there a term of two to four weeks that starts on a set date? |
| Pay per visit | V × sessions | Single visits are sold and you train only a few times a block | Is a single visit available on the days I want? |
Divide each cost by your sessions to get the cost per session. A route that needs the gym's agreement is not open to you until the gym confirms it in writing.
Worked example: a 28/28 roster
An engineer works 28 days offshore and 28 at home. Travel takes a day at each end, so his home block has 26 days, and he trains five times a week: about 18 sessions a block. His quotes put B at 1.25M and each freeze at 0.25M.
- Paid straight through: a cycle is about 1.85 months, so about 1.85M, or roughly M ÷ 10 per session.
- Frozen every hitch: about 0.93M for the month at home plus 0.25M for the freeze, so about 1.18M, or M ÷ 15 per session.
- A block per home period: 1.25M, or about M ÷ 14 per session.
Paying straight through costs him about half as much again per session as either of the other routes. Freezing is cheapest, but only if the gym lets him freeze six or seven times a year. The block costs a little more, is simpler to run, and lets him stop after any cycle.
On a 14/14 roster the picture shifts. A two-week hitch is often too short to freeze, so the choice usually comes down to a block of access or paying per visit.
Freeze questions for a rotation roster
- What is the shortest freeze you allow, in days?
- How many separate freezes a year? A 28/28 roster needs six or seven, a 14/14 roster thirteen.
- Can I book a year of freezes from my roster in one go?
- If a crew change slips and I am held on site, can I extend a freeze by message?
- Is there a fee per freeze, and does the end date move back by the frozen days?
- If my rotation changes, can I switch to an ordinary membership without a new joining fee?
Standard freeze rules are usually written for a summer away or an illness, not for a freeze every month. A gym may say no, or offer something else, such as a short term for each home block. Whatever you agree, get it in writing. The contract checklist lists the other clauses to read.
Training around the hitch
Make the home block your training block, and use the hitch to hold on to what you built. Some installations and site camps have a small gym, so ask your employer what yours has and plan two or three short sessions a week there.
- First days home: sleep and family first. A walk or an easy session at most.
- Middle of the block: four or five sessions a week, carrying the hard training of the cycle.
- Last days before the hitch: lighter sessions, then pack.
- On the hitch: whatever the site allows, kept short.
Coming off night shifts, give your sleep a day or two to settle before a hard session. If something hurts after a physical hitch, see a doctor or physiotherapist before you train through it.
Where RPM fits a rotation worker
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free parking on site and a lift to Level 4. Its tiers are Floor for the training floor, Engine with coached programming, and Atelier, built around 1:1 coaching. A coached tier suits someone who wants each home block planned rather than improvised.
RPM does not publish freeze rules, minimum terms or prices online. Ask the team whether a freeze can follow your roster and whether any short term matches your home block. If you would rather buy a weekly pass for each home block, confirm availability, price, inclusions and the section covered with the team first. The Ladies section is women-only, and men use the Mixed section.
Where it does not fit: if you spend your home blocks in another emirate or abroad, an Abu Dhabi membership sits idle whichever way you pay.
Early-morning and late-evening opening, with shorter Friday hours, gives a body clock still on shift time some room:
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
Questions, answered.
What if my rotation changes partway through the year?
Ask before you sign whether you can move between freezing, a short term and an ordinary membership without a new joining fee. Rosters change, so that flexibility is worth asking for.
Should I just pay per visit?
If you train only a few times per home block, it can be the cheapest route, provided single visits are sold on the days you want. Pay per visit or a membership finds the break-even.
I fly to my family abroad on my weeks off. Do I need a gym here?
Only for the days you spend in Abu Dhabi between flights and hitches. Single visits or a pass usually suit that better than a membership, where they are available.
Can a coach plan my training around the hitch?
That is the kind of planning a coach can do: a hard home block, a short plan for the site gym and an easy restart. At RPM, ask how coaching works when you are away for weeks at a time, and whether unused sessions carry over.
