On assignment for a few months: match gym access to the posting

Match the access to the length of your assignment and to how firm its end date is. For about a month, passes or the shortest term a gym sells usually fit. For two or three months, a fixed short membership is often the simpler buy. For four to six months, a longer term can win, but only once you know what leaving early would cost. RPM confirms its prices and terms on enquiry, so get the short-term answers in writing before you choose.

Plan around the end date

A posting has a start date you know and an end date you are often only told. The project slips, the client extends, or head office recalls you a month early. So the right access is less about the cheapest week and more about what each option costs when the dates move.

The short end has its own guides. A single month is priced in the one-month guide, and a stay of a few weeks in weekly passes or a monthly membership. For short-term access at RPM, the weekly pass page sets out what the team confirms before you rely on a pass.

Access options by assignment length

Read across from each option to the length of your posting. 'Price it' means the option can win, depending on the quotes you get. Terms differ between gyms, so read every cell as a question to ask.

A six-month term on a posting that ends in month four is the classic loss. Before you sign for longer than your firm dates, ask what leaving early costs.

Past six months, the posting is no longer temporary for gym purposes. Weigh terms as any resident would, from monthly to annual.

Five questions for a posting that may change length

  1. If my assignment ends early, what does leaving cost: the rest of the term, a fee, or nothing after notice?
  2. If it is extended, can I add months one at a time at the same rate, or must I sign a new term?
  3. How much notice do you need, and can I give it the day my company tells me?
  4. Can the membership pass to a colleague who replaces me on the project?
  5. If I fly home for two weeks mid-posting, can I freeze, and does the end date move back?

Ask by message so the answers are in writing, and keep them in one thread. Every clause worth reading before you sign is in the contract checklist.

Joining without long-term residency

Can a temporary resident get a gym membership in Abu Dhabi?

Usually, yes. What varies is the shortest term each gym will sell and the ID it accepts. Ask for the shortest term actually open to you, whether it renews by itself, and whether a passport is enough if your Emirates ID has not been issued yet. Then compare that term with the firm dates of your assignment, not the dates you hope for.

Have these ready before you enquire:

  • Your passport, and your Emirates ID if you have one.
  • Your assignment dates, from the letter or contract.
  • A local phone number, since many gyms confirm terms by message.
  • Your employer's reimbursement rules, if the company pays.

Who pays: your company first

Some assignment packages include a wellness allowance or reimburse gym costs. Ask HR before you buy anything, because the answer can change which option is cheapest for you. A reimbursed membership usually needs an itemised receipt in the gym's name.

If several colleagues are posted at the same time, ask whether the company will set up something for the group. At RPM, corporate arrangements are tailored per organisation and confirmed on enquiry.

Serviced apartments and compound housing often have a small gym of their own. Use it for easy days, and keep a club for the heavy sessions it cannot host.

Seasons inside a posting

A posting of a few months often crosses a season or a holiday. Check which of these fall inside your dates.

If your posting includesPlan for
June to SeptemberTraining indoors, arriving early or after dark, and drinking more through the working day
RamadanGym hours that often change for the month, with many people training after iftar
Eid holidaysA pause in the project, and a short trip home that may be worth a freeze
The cooler monthsOutdoor sessions becoming realistic, so the gym earns its fee on heavy days

Use the first fortnight to learn the floor and fix one training slot. After that, run a proper programme: three months is long enough for a structured block with a clear goal, and a coach can set one up if you want the plan done for you.

RPM for a stay measured in months

RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free parking on site and a lift to the floor. Of its three tiers, Floor covers the training floor, Engine adds coached programming and Atelier centres on 1:1 coaching. Prices, inclusions and the minimum term are confirmed on enquiry, so ask for the shortest term on offer and what happens if the posting ends early or runs on.

For a pass, confirm availability, price, inclusions and the section covered with the team. The Ladies section is for women only, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio, and men train in the Mixed section.

Where it may not fit: RPM publishes no terms online, so a fixed answer before you land depends on the team's reply. And if your project site and housing are both on the far side of the city, test the trip at your hour before you sign.

Early-morning and late-evening opening, with shorter Friday hours, leaves room either side of a site day:

DaysOpening hours
Saturday to Thursday06:00–23:00
Friday09:00–22:00

Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

My serviced apartment has a gym. Is a club worth paying for?

For a month of cardio and light weights, perhaps not. For several months of heavy lifting, classes or coaching, a small residence gym usually runs short within weeks.

Can my spouse join for the same period?

Ask whether a second membership can be sold on the same short term. At RPM, the Ladies section is for women only and men train in the Mixed section, so check which sections each membership covers.

What if I am moved to another emirate halfway through?

That is the early-exit question again. Before signing, ask whether the remaining months can be cancelled, frozen or passed on, and keep the answer in writing.

Is a coach worth it on a three-month posting?

It can be, because three months suits a block with one clear goal. Ask how 1:1 coaching is sold, and whether unused sessions expire when your assignment ends.
