Hotel gym not enough? Test whether the trip pays off

Leave the hotel to train only for the sessions its gym cannot host, and only when your stay is long enough to repay the trip. On one or two nights the hotel gym nearly always wins. From three or four nights, one trip to a full gym usually earns its place, and from a week, regular trips do. RPM in Al Manhal is a standalone club, not a hotel facility, so any access is arranged with its team for your dates.

What this test decides

Your hotel gym covers part of your training, and you want to know whether leaving to train is worth the time. This page answers that by length of stay. What separates a hotel fitness room from a full gym is set out in hotel gym or full gym, and which outside gym to pick in choosing a gym for your hotel stay.

First make sure you can get in. Short-term passes are sold at each gym's discretion and can change. At RPM, the weekly pass page explains what the team settles before you count on a pass.

Sort your sessions on the first evening

Take your plan down to the hotel gym on the evening you arrive, or ask the front desk for photos before you fly. Put every planned session into one of three groups.

  • Fits as written: cardio, mobility work, light dumbbells, bodyweight circuits.
  • Fits with changes: a lower-body day with lighter dumbbells and more repetitions, or treadmill intervals in place of sled pushes.
  • Does not fit: anything that needs a rack and barbell, heavy dumbbells, a cable tower, a sled or a coach.

Only the last group is in question. If it is empty, stay in and sleep longer. If it holds your main lifting day, use the table below.

The worth-it test, by length of stay

Gap sessions are the ones in your last group. A trip pays off when the session would be hard to replace and your spare time can absorb the round trip.

Length of stayGap sessions you can skipTrips that usually pay offGo whenStay in when
One or two nightsAll of themNone, or one at mostA test or competition is days awayIt is arrival day, or the trip cuts into sleep
Three or four nightsOneOneYour main lifting day lands on your earliest finishEvery gap in your diary falls in the evening rush
Five to seven nightsOne, sometimes noneTwoYou train four or more times a week at homeEach visit needs its own pass and two hotel sessions would do
One to two weeksNone for longTwo or three a weekAccess is confirmed for the whole periodThe trip at your hour is one you would dread repeating
More than two weeksNoneMost heavy sessionsYou can settle into one regular slotYou are about to move into housing elsewhere in the city

Over two nights, one missed heavy day changes little. Each extra night leaves fewer sessions you can skip without losing ground.

Past two weeks, the stay has stopped being a trip: plan access as temporary residents do, and keep the hotel gym for easy days.

Cost the trip in hours

Money is the smaller cost of leaving the hotel. Time is the bigger one, and guests tend to count only the drive. Add up the whole round trip at your training hour:

  1. Room to training floor, including the wait for a car and the walk to the right level.
  2. The first-visit desk: a form, an ID check, perhaps a quick tour.
  3. Changing before and after, plus the session itself.
  4. Back to your room, including the wait outside for a car while you are still hot.

Divide the total by the length of the session. If an hour of training costs about two hours away from your room, the trip usually pays off for a main session on a stay of three nights or more. At three hours or more, keep it for the one session you would most hate to lose.

From May to September, the wait outside after training is the part guests underestimate. Fridays need their own check, because many gyms keep shorter hours and the roads change around the midday prayer.

Getting in without the hotel's help

How do hotel guests in central Abu Dhabi get access to a full gym?

Through the gym itself. Entry to an outside gym is something you arrange directly, not through the hotel. Message the gym with your dates, ask which short-term options it sells, such as a day pass, a weekly pass or a short membership, and get availability, price and the area you may use confirmed in writing before you book a car. Multi-venue apps are another route, but a credit can leave out parts of a gym, so check what it covers.

Once access is confirmed, pack for a building you cannot pop back from:

  • The written pass confirmation, saved on your phone.
  • ID: ask in advance whether a passport is enough.
  • A full change of clothes, and a towel unless the gym has confirmed it provides one.
  • The building and level written down for the driver.

A five-night stay, worked through

A guest checks in on Sunday and leaves on Friday morning. At home she trains four times a week: two heavy lower-body days, an upper-body day and a conditioning session. Her hotel gym has treadmills, one cable station and dumbbells up to a moderate weight.

  • Monday, upper body: the cable station and dumbbells cover it.
  • Wednesday, conditioning: treadmill intervals and a dumbbell circuit in the hotel.
  • Tuesday, first heavy day: it needs a rack, and Tuesday is her earliest finish, so this is the trip.
  • Thursday, second heavy day: a second trip would land in the evening rush, so she does a lighter dumbbell session in the hotel.

One trip and three hotel sessions, with nothing important lost. Over ten nights the second heavy day would have earned a trip too, and day passes or a weekly pass would settle how to pay for them.

RPM as the full gym on your list

RPM is a standalone club on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free parking on site and a lift up to the floor. It is not attached to any hotel, so run the hours sum for it as for any gym.

The training floor photos show what a hotel room usually lacks: a squat rack with colour bumper plates, plate-loaded machines including a leg press, and cable towers, plus a turf lane with a sled. Men train in the Mixed section, and the women-only Ladies section has its own strength and cardio equipment.

  • Access: ask whether a day or weekly pass is available for your dates, and confirm availability, price, inclusions and the section covered with the team.
  • Recovery: the suite has a Finnish sauna, an aroma steam room and an ice bath. Ask whether a pass includes it.
  • Getting ready: keypad lockers and a grooming hub with hairdryers. Ask whether towels are provided.
  • Where it does not fit: if the hotel gym covers your plan, or the trip at your hour fails the sum, stay in.

Opening runs from early morning to late evening, with shorter hours on Friday:

DaysOpening hours
Saturday to Thursday06:00–23:00
Friday09:00–22:00

Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Is it worth leaving the hotel for the sauna and ice bath alone?

Only once the team has confirmed your pass includes them. Heat and cold rooms do not suit everyone: if you are pregnant or have a heart condition, ask your doctor before using them.

My stay has just been extended by a week. What changes?

Move down the table. Four nights that become eleven usually turn one trip into two or three a week, and make a pass for the whole period worth pricing.

Will the hotel tell me which gyms take visitors?

Staff often know where guests go, but a recommendation is not access. Message the gym yourself and keep its written answer.

What if the hotel gym is full when I want it?

Hotel gyms can be busy around breakfast and in the early evening. If your only gap falls then, an outside gym may be the sole option that day, which moves you one row down the table.
