The Abu Dhabi gym year, month by month
Gyms in the city follow the weather, the school year and the religious calendar. The table shows typical patterns rather than measurements, and no two gyms are the same.
| Period | What tends to change | What it means if you join then |
|---|---|---|
| January | New Year plans bring a wave of new joiners to many gyms | Expect a fuller floor for a few weeks, so visit at your hour first |
| February to April | Mild weather draws many people outdoors | Indoor and outdoor training sit side by side |
| Ramadan, which moves earlier each year | Training often shifts to before iftar or late evening, and hours may change | Ask for the Ramadan hours before you sign |
| May to September | Heat moves outdoor running and cycling indoors | Treadmills and bikes can be busier early and late in the day |
| July and August | Many residents travel during the school holiday | Check freeze terms if you will be away for weeks |
| September | School returns and routines restart after travel | Another busier period for joining at many gyms |
| October to December | Temperatures ease and outdoor options return | Outdoor sessions can add to the gym rather than replace it |
Whatever month you choose, the terms you sign matter more than the date you sign them. RPM membership lists the terms worth getting in writing before you pay.
Four things that matter more than the month
A well-timed membership you stop using is worth less than a badly timed one you use every week. Before you think about the calendar, check these.
- Can you start within the next week? If you are about to travel or face a heavy month at work, the first weeks of a membership are paid-for time you lose.
- Freeze terms. If you travel in summer or over Eid, ask whether you can pause, for how long and at what cost.
- Minimum term and renewal. A contract that renews automatically in a month you will be abroad needs a note in your diary.
- Your hour. Visit at the time you will train, in the season you will start.
Joining in summer
From May to September, the heat pushes people who usually run, walk or cycle outside onto treadmills and bikes. For a new member that cuts both ways. Indoor training becomes the obvious way to stay active, while the cardio machines can be busier early and late in the day.
Summer is also when many residents travel. If you join in June and then leave for most of July and August, check the freeze terms first, or start when you are back.
- Can I freeze while I travel, and how much notice do you need?
- Which hours are busiest on the cardio machines in summer?
- Does the class timetable change during the school holiday?
For the daily pattern, see when the gym is least busy.
Joining around Ramadan
Ramadan moves earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year, so over time it falls in every season. Many people who are fasting train shortly before iftar or later in the evening, and many gyms adjust their hours for the month.
Joining just before or during Ramadan works if you can keep your evenings open. Ask for the gym's Ramadan hours and its busiest evening times before you sign. If you have a medical condition, speak to your doctor about training while fasting.
September and January: the busy starts
Many gyms see more people join in January, with New Year plans, and in September, as families come back and routines restart. The floor can feel fuller for a few weeks.
That is no reason to avoid those months. It is a reason to visit at your hour first and to book classes early. If you start in a busy month, the crowd often thins as the weeks go on.
What about offers?
Some gyms advertise offers at particular times of year. An offer saves money only if the terms behind it suit you. Judge it on the total you will pay over the whole term, the real end date of the offer, what you give up for the lower price and what happens at renewal.
How to judge a gym offer walks through the numbers. RPM does not publish prices or offers online, so ask the team what applies when you enquire, and get it in writing.
Joining after a move or a long break
Many people join when life changes: a new job, a move across the island, the end of a long break. Those are good moments, because the routine is being rebuilt anyway and a new gym can be part of it from the first week.
If you are leaving another gym, time the change around your old contract's notice period. Switching gyms without the loose ends has a worked example.
Starting at RPM
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking at AD HUB. It keeps early-morning and late-evening opening, with shorter Friday hours, so ask whether hours change during Ramadan.
There are three membership tiers: Floor, Engine and Atelier. Prices, inclusions and freeze terms are confirmed on enquiry, so ask for them in writing whichever month you join. A free guided tour lets you see the floor at your hour before you decide.
Questions, answered.
Is January a bad time to join a gym?
Not if January is when you are ready. Many gyms are busier for a few weeks, so visit at your training hour first and book classes early.
Should I wait for an offer before joining?
Only if you can wait without losing momentum. The weeks of training you skip while waiting can matter more than the saving. Judge any offer by its total cost and end date.
Can I freeze my membership over the summer?
It depends on the gym's terms. Ask whether freezes are allowed, for how long and with how much notice, and get the answer in writing.
Is it worth joining just before Ramadan?
It can be, if you can train in the evening. Ask for the gym's Ramadan hours first, and if you have a medical condition, speak to your doctor about training while fasting.
Does RPM run offers at certain times of year?
RPM does not publish offers or prices online. Ask the team what currently applies, and get the terms and any end date in writing.
