Boxing sessions as the fixed points of your week
A boxing session runs to a timetable, so it is the part of your week you cannot move. Everything else in a full gym can bend around it: you choose when to lift, ride or hit the bag alone. Plan the sessions first, then decide what the rest of your access is for. Boxing at RPM describes the sessions themselves. This guide is about the hours around them.
Where can I do boxing and gym workouts in Abu Dhabi?
Three kinds of venue cover both. A full gym that runs fitness boxing puts both in one trip, usually without sparring. A boxing club plus a separate gym gives more technical depth for two memberships and two drives. A martial-arts or MMA academy teaches several disciplines, often with less space for weights. A full gym or a boxing-only club compares the first two in detail. RPM is the first kind.
What each part of the club adds to a boxer
| Zone | What it adds | How a boxer uses it | Easy to overdo? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardio machines: treadmills, cross-trainers, bikes | Aerobic work without punching | Easy rides on days off the bag, and warm-ups before a session | Rarely, if the effort stays easy |
| Training floor: racks, machines, cables, dumbbells | Strength for the legs, trunk and upper back | Two short sessions a week | Yes, in weeks heavy with pad work |
| Functional area: sled, ropes, kettlebells, medicine balls | Conditioning that does not load the hands | Short finishers after technique work | Yes, when it turns into a second hard session |
| Heavy bags outside sessions | Practice time | Solo rounds on the combinations from your last session | Yes, if you rehearse sloppy habits |
| Recovery suite: sauna, steam room, ice bath | An optional end to the visit | Heat or cold after training, if your doctor has no objection | It can eat into sleep after late sessions |
Women can also use the Ladies section, which has its own strength and cardio equipment and the women-only Pilates studio. Which sections and which parts of the recovery suite a tier covers is confirmed on enquiry.
The quarter-hour either side of a session
Full access changes how a session starts and ends. Instead of arriving cold and leaving soaked, use the floor to bracket it.
- Before: an easy spin on a bike until you are warm, then wrap your hands while you get your breath back.
- Before: a couple of rounds of shadow boxing in front of a mirror on the stance and guard cues from last time.
- After: easy pedalling or walking until your breathing settles, which also gives you time to cool down before the drive.
- After: unwrap, wipe your gloves and leave the wraps to air rather than balling them up in a bag, which matters more in summer.
- After: write down the combinations you were taught, so your next solo bag session has a plan.
Solo bag rounds between sessions
Access to the bags outside sessions is where full gym access pays off for a boxer, as long as you rehearse what the coach taught rather than inventing your own routine.
- Pick two combinations from your last session and one cue for each, such as "turn the back foot on the cross".
- Shadow box both for a round or two before touching the bag.
- Run timed rounds with a rest between, keeping every punch at the speed where the cue still holds.
- Finish with a round of footwork and defence, moving around the bag rather than standing in front of it.
- Note anything that felt wrong and take it to the coach at your next session.
Ask when the bags are open for solo use, since they may be busy during sessions, and wipe the bag down when you finish.
Three ways people combine the two
- Two sessions and one gym day: the boxing carries the conditioning, and one floor visit covers strength. Suits people with little time.
- Three sessions and two short floor visits: strength stays in, but each visit is brief so the legs stay fresh for footwork. For how to arrange hard and easy days in a week like this, read programming boxing and strength together.
- One session and more gym: for people whose diary rarely matches the timetable. The session keeps the technique honest, and solo bag rounds and the floor do the rest.
Whichever pattern you choose, give at least one day a week to nothing harder than a walk.
When the timetable and your week do not match
- A missed session: do a solo bag session from your notes instead of an extra hard workout elsewhere.
- Summer, roughly May to September: the drive in can tire you before you start, so lean on easy indoor cardio and shorter bag rounds, and drink water before you arrive.
- Ramadan: if sessions move to after iftar or you train less, keep one boxing session and use the floor lightly. If you fast, ask your doctor before hard training.
- Work travel: shadow boxing needs only floor space, and any gym bike where you are staying keeps the easy cardio going until you are back.
- A full or cancelled session: use the time for strength or easy cardio, and ask the team about other session times that week.
Boxing plus the rest of RPM: what to confirm
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking at AD HUB and a lift up to the club. Fitness boxing runs in the Mixed section's functional area, where the heavy bags hang beside a turf lane with a sled. For women, the roster lists Imen Hasnaoui as the combat and self-defence coach in the Ladies section.
- Whether boxing sessions sit inside a tier or are arranged separately. Floor gives you the training floor, Engine adds coached programming, and Atelier centres on 1:1 coaching.
- Which sections your tier covers, and whether the recovery suite is included.
- When the bags are open outside sessions, and whether to bring your own gloves and wraps.
- Whether the club offers sparring, and who supervises it. Fitness boxing does not need it.
On a free guided tour, ask to see the bags, the training floor and the cardio area at the hour you would come.
Questions, answered.
Can I hit the heavy bags when no session is running?
Ask the team when the bags are open for solo use. Where they are, solo rounds are one of the most useful things full access gives you. Bring wraps and gloves, and share the bag at busy times.
Is cardio on the machines worth doing if I already box?
Easy cardio on days off the bag adds aerobic work without more punching, and a bike is a gentle way to warm up before a session. Keep it easy enough to hold a conversation.
Can I train boxing in the Ladies section?
The roster lists a combat and self-defence coach in the Ladies section. Ask which combat sessions run there and when, and whether your tier covers both sections.
Should I lift on the same day as a boxing session?
You can, with the boxing first if technique is your priority. Keep the lifting short so you are not too tired for good form on either.
