Your own training is one question, other people are another
Recording your own squat to check your technique is mostly about the gym's rules and ordinary courtesy. Recording other people, even in the background, touches their privacy, which brings the law into it.
| What you want to do | The main question | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Film your own set for technique | The gym's house rules | Ask first, frame tightly, keep others out of shot |
| Take a photo with a friend who agrees | House rules and the background | Check that nobody else is identifiable behind you |
| Film a class or a busy floor | Other people's consent | Do not, unless the gym arranges it with everyone's agreement |
| Film in a changing room, a recovery room or a women-only area | Privacy | Never |
| Shoot paid content for a brand | The gym's written permission and everyone's consent | Agree it with the gym in writing first |
RPM is one club with a Mixed section and a women-only Ladies section, and the rules can differ between them. See RPM Gym in Al Manhal for how the two sections work.
What UAE law says, in brief
This is general information, not legal advice. Laws change, and their exact wording matters. Read the official text or ask a lawyer licensed in the UAE before relying on any summary, including this one.
The UAE government portal (u.ae) lists several federal laws under data and privacy protection. Two of them are relevant to photos and video in a gym.
- Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combatting Rumours and Cybercrimes. The portal describes it as a comprehensive legal framework against the misuse and abuse of online technologies, and lists it among the UAE's laws on data and privacy.
- Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 Regarding the Protection of Personal Data. According to the portal, it came into force on 2 January 2022, prohibits processing personal data without the owner's consent except in some cases, and sets duties for companies that hold personal data.
The portal links to the official text of the cybercrimes law on the UAE Legislation portal (uaelegislation.gov.ae). If you plan to post footage that shows anyone other than you, read it there first or take advice.
The practical rule that follows is simple. Do not photograph or film anyone without their consent, and do not post or share images of other people that they have not agreed to.
House rules usually go further than the law
Many gyms set their own rules on phones and cameras, and those rules apply on their premises whatever the law allows. Ask about them on your first visit.
- May I film my own sets, and where on the floor?
- Is a tripod or phone stand allowed, or does it get in the way of equipment?
- Are cameras banned in particular areas, such as changing rooms, recovery rooms or studios?
- Whom do I tell if someone is filming me?
- Does the gym itself film or photograph members for its social media, and how does it ask for consent?
A gym that takes privacy seriously usually has a written rule and staff who enforce it. If the answer is a shrug, weigh that when you choose.
Changing rooms and women-only areas
Privacy matters most where people change, recover or train in women-only space. Many women pick a women-only section precisely because they do not want to be seen or recorded while they train, so a camera there undoes the reason they joined.
- Never take a phone camera into a changing room, even for a mirror selfie.
- In a women-only section, ask the gym's rule before taking any photo, and keep other women out of the frame.
- In recovery rooms, leave the phone in your locker.
What a gym's photos should prove explains why women-only areas are often missing from gym galleries, and what to ask instead.
A checklist for content creators
Filming workouts for social media is common, and most problems come from the background. A short routine avoids them.
- Ask the front desk whether filming is allowed, and where.
- Pick a quiet corner at a quiet hour, and frame the shot so only you are in it.
- Check the background before you post. Crop or blur anyone identifiable, or shoot again.
- For paid or sponsored content, get the gym's permission in writing, and ask whether its name or logo may appear.
- If a coach or friend appears, ask before you post, and take them out if they say no.
Avoid setting up in the middle of the floor at peak times. A tripod in front of the only empty bench costs other people their session.
If someone films you
Ask them politely to stop and delete it. If they refuse, or you would rather not confront them, tell a member of staff straight away.
If footage of you appears online without your consent, keep a record of where you saw it. The UAE government portal says online content that invades privacy can be reported to the UAE's licensed internet service providers to be taken down. For anything more serious, contact the police.
Filming at RPM
RPM does not publish a filming policy on this page. Ask the team about phones and cameras in the section you will use before you record anything, and expect stricter rules in the women-only Ladies section and the changing areas.
The gallery shows RPM's own photos of the training floor and facilities, so you can see the club before you visit. A free guided tour is the place to ask about house rules in person.

Questions, answered.
Can I film my own workout in a gym in the UAE?
Usually, if the gym's rules allow it. Ask first, point the camera at yourself and keep other people out of the frame.
Is it illegal to take a photo of someone in a gym?
Do not do it without their consent. UAE federal law protects privacy, and gyms usually forbid it anyway. For the exact legal position, read Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on the UAE Legislation portal or take legal advice.
Can the gym post photos of me on its social media?
Ask how it handles consent. The government portal summarises the Personal Data Protection Law as prohibiting the processing of personal data without the owner's consent, except in some cases. You can tell the gym you do not want to appear.
Can I take photos on a gym tour?
Ask the person showing you round. An empty corner of the floor is often fine to photograph, but members and changing areas are not.
Where can I read the law itself?
The UAE government portal links to the official text on the UAE Legislation portal from its page on data protection laws. Read it there rather than relying on social media summaries.
