How to use this question bank
Nobody needs to ask all of these. Pick the eight or ten that match your priorities and ask the same ones at every gym, so the answers line up. Sending a few by WhatsApp before the visit has a bonus: the answers arrive in writing.
What should I check before joining a gym in Abu Dhabi?
Three things, in this order. First, that the space you need is open and usable at your hour, which you check by visiting. Second, that the terms suit life here, including summer travel and Ramadan, which you check by asking and getting the answers in writing. Third, that you have tried the place in some form. This page covers the questions, and the inspection walk-through covers what to look at.
If you book RPM's free guided tour, bring your list. The team confirms prices and inclusions on enquiry, so the tour is a good moment to ask.
Access and opening hours
| Ask | Why it matters | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Which areas does my membership cover, and at what times? | Some memberships leave out a section, a studio or the recovery rooms | Named areas for your tier, and what costs extra |
| How do hours change in Ramadan, in summer and on public holidays? | Timetables shift several times a year in the UAE | A clear pattern, and where changes are announced |
| What are the Friday hours? | Many gyms open later or close earlier on Fridays | The actual hours, without hesitation |
| Can I bring a guest, and on what terms? | Useful if a spouse or friend may train with you | A simple rule, and the cost if there is one |
RPM opens early in the morning and late into the evening, with shorter Friday hours. Which sections a membership covers depends on the tier, so ask the team to confirm yours.
Crowding at your hour
| Ask | Why it matters | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| When are your busiest hours, and what does busy look like here? | A gym can be calm at tour time and packed at yours | Specific days, and an honest picture of the wait |
| Is there a time limit on racks or machines when it is busy? | Shows how peak hour is managed | A rule that staff actually apply |
| Do classes take over part of the floor? | A class in the functional area can block the space you came for | Which areas are used, and when |
| Which months are busiest? | September and the weeks after Ramadan can bring a rush of new joiners | A straight answer about the seasons |
Coaching and classes
| Ask | Why it matters | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Is an induction or a programme included, or is coaching extra? | Decides whether you train with a plan or guess | What your tier includes, in plain words |
| Can I meet a coach, or watch a session, before booking? | Shows how coaches cue and correct | Yes, with a suggested time |
| How do coaches track progress? | Without tracking, sessions drift into random workouts | A training log with regular reviews |
| Are female coaches available? | Some women prefer or need a female coach | Names, and the section they work in |
| How is the class timetable published and booked? | Timetables change, and full classes waste trips | An app or message group, with booking rules |
RPM's three tiers differ mainly in coaching. Floor is built around the training floor, Engine adds coached programming, and Atelier is built around one-to-one coaching. Inclusions are confirmed on enquiry. To judge the coaching itself before you pay, see how to compare coaching quality.
Women-only space
| Ask | Why it matters | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Is it a separate section, or set times for women in a shared hall? | A section stays women-only all day, while set times limit when you can train | Which one it is, stated plainly |
| How do I get to it from the entrance? | Some routes pass through the mixed floor | A description of the route, or an offer to show you |
| What equipment is inside, compared with the mixed floor? | Some women-only areas hold only light equipment | Both strength and cardio kit, listed |
| Who works in it? | Privacy depends on staff as much as walls | Female coaches and staff, with clear rules for anyone else |
| Can anyone see in? | Windows, glass walls and cameras all matter | A clear answer about each |
At RPM the Ladies section is for women only. It has its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio, and female coaches on the roster work there. For the privacy questions in more depth, see RPM's ladies privacy guide.
Hygiene and changing
| Ask | Why it matters | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| How often is the floor cleaned at peak times? | Morning cleaning does not help at the evening rush | A routine through the day, with staff on the floor |
| Are towels provided, or do I bring my own? | Changes what you pack every day | A plain yes or no |
| How are the sauna, steam room and ice bath checked? | Wet rooms need frequent cleaning | Who checks them, and how often |
| How do the lockers work, and can I keep one? | Keypad, key or padlock changes what you bring | A clear answer, and any rental terms |
Freezes and cancellations, then a trial run
These are headline questions only. The full set of terms to get in writing, with a worksheet, is in the contract checklist.
- Can I freeze for summer travel, and what does it cost? Many residents leave Abu Dhabi for weeks in July and August.
- How do I cancel, how much notice is needed, and can I do it in writing rather than in person?
- Does the membership renew automatically, and will I be reminded first?
- Can I train once before I join? If so, what does it cost and what does it include?
At RPM the free tour is a walk-through with the team, not a workout. If you want to train before joining, ask whether a day pass is currently available, what it includes and what it costs.
How to read the answers
| You hear | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| A specific answer with names, days or rules | Staff know the place and are happy to be held to it |
| It depends, followed by what it depends on | Fine. Ask for the version that applies to you |
| It depends, and nothing after it | Push once more, then count it as unknown |
| You have to sign today to get this | Pressure. Walk away and decide later |
| Do not worry, we are flexible | Ask for that flexibility in writing |
Questions, answered.
Is it better to ask by WhatsApp or in person?
Both. Ask the questions that affect money and access by WhatsApp, so the answers are in writing, and keep the rest for the tour, where you can see how staff respond.
What if staff do not know an answer?
That is fine if they find out and reply in writing. It is a warning sign if the same question gets a different answer each time.
Can I ask to speak to a coach before joining?
Yes. A short conversation shows how a coach thinks about your goal. At RPM, ask the team which coaches work in the section you would use.
Should I ask about the summer even if I join in winter?
Yes. Summer brings travel, a change in crowds and sometimes a change in hours, and the freeze rules decide what that costs you.
