Start with the rooms you will use
Gyms use the word recovery for very different things, from a single sauna off the changing room to a suite with heat rooms and cold water. Before comparing, decide what you would use in an ordinary week. A room you never enter adds nothing, however good it looks on a tour.
RPM's recovery suite has a Finnish sauna, an aroma steam room and an ice bath. The checks below apply to any gym, RPM included.
Recovery facilities, explained
| Facility | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dry sauna | A wood-lined room with dry heat, as in a Finnish sauna | Seating, posted time guidance and who looks in on it during the day |
| Steam room | Humid heat, sometimes scented | How it is cleaned, and how staff would know if someone felt unwell inside |
| Ice bath or cold plunge | A tub or small pool of cold water for brief immersion | How the water is kept clean, and how often it is changed or treated |
| Stretching or mobility area | Mats and space for gentle movement after training | Whether it is a proper space or a corner of the busy floor |
| Massage | Hands-on work by a therapist, usually booked and paid for separately | Who gives it, and whether they are licensed to practise |
| Pool or jacuzzi | Found at some larger clubs and complexes | Supervision, opening times and whether your tier includes it |
Gyms often use ice bath and cold plunge to mean the same thing. Ask what each gym actually has before you compare them.
Cleanliness and supervision
Shared heat rooms and cold water need regular cleaning and someone keeping an eye on them. Use your tour to ask:
- How often are the rooms cleaned, and is there a cleaning log you can see?
- How is the cold-water tub kept clean, and how often is the water changed or treated?
- Are the rules posted in each room, and in which languages?
- Is there an alarm or call button inside, and who responds to it?
- Do staff check the suite during the day, especially at busy hours?
- How are the rooms arranged for men and women, and what is the dress code?
Look for yourself as well: dry benches, clean floors, no standing water and clear signs. A gym that cannot answer basic hygiene questions has given you its answer.
Access depends on your tier, your section and your hour
A suite outside your tier, or one that is full when you finish training, does you no good. Ask before you join:
- Which tiers or passes include the suite, and whether it costs extra on yours.
- How access is arranged for your section.
- Whether you book a time or walk in.
- How busy it gets straight after work, when many people finish training at once.
- Whether towels are provided or you bring your own.
What makes a gym good for recovery in Abu Dhabi?
The rooms you want, kept clean, supervised and open to you at the hour you finish training, with clear rules posted inside. In Abu Dhabi, add two local checks: how access is arranged for men and women, and how the gym's hours change in Ramadan, when many people train later in the evening. A long list of facilities matters less than these basics.
Comparing recovery offers between gyms
How do I compare gym recovery facilities in Abu Dhabi?
List the rooms you would use. For each gym, note whether they exist, whether your tier includes them, how they are cleaned and supervised, and how busy they are at your hour. Score only the rooms you would use: one clean, well-run sauna you can always get into is worth more than a bigger suite you cannot. Then weigh recovery against everything else with the facilities comparison.
Use recovery as a tiebreaker unless you know you will use it most weeks. The training floor, the coaching and the trip still decide whether you keep going. If you are unsure whether a suite earns its cost, read whether a gym with recovery facilities is worth it.
Health comes before any facility
Saunas, steam rooms and ice baths do not suit everyone. Ask your doctor first if you have a heart or blood-pressure condition, are pregnant, take medication or are not sure. If you feel dizzy, faint or unwell in any of them, get out at once and tell a member of staff.
This page makes no claim that heat or cold speeds recovery or improves performance. It is about choosing facilities. How you use them is a matter for the rules posted in the suite, the staff and, where your health is involved, your doctor.
Two local points: in the summer months you may arrive already warm and short of water, and if you fast in Ramadan, check with your doctor before adding heat to a training day.

Questions, answered.
Is a cold plunge the same as an ice bath?
The terms are often used for the same thing: a tub or small pool of cold water for short immersion. Ask each gym what it has, how the water is kept clean and what guidance it gives.
Should recovery facilities be included in the membership price?
Some gyms include them in every tier, others only in higher tiers, and some charge separately. At RPM, which tiers or passes include the suite is confirmed on enquiry.
What if the suite is busy when I finish training?
Ask staff when it is quieter, or shift part of your training later. If it is always full at your hour, count it as a facility you will rarely use.
Will staff explain how to use the rooms?
Ask on your tour. Many gyms post guidance in each room and expect you to read it first. At RPM, follow the rules posted in the suite and the team's guidance ahead of any general advice.
Can I use the recovery suite on a day pass?
Some gyms allow it and others do not. At RPM, ask whether a day or weekly pass covers the suite, and confirm availability, price and inclusions with the team before you go.
