A busy season is a date you can plan for
A bad week arrives without warning. A busy season does not. The year-end close in December, audit fieldwork in the first months of the year, a budget round, a tender deadline, a conference week at ADNEC or a launch date are all on the calendar weeks ahead. That makes them plannable, and the usual mistake is choosing a gym for the calm weeks before them.
Before you compare RPM's membership options or any other gym's, write down four facts about the season:
- Where you will be working: your own office, a client site, a project room or your desk at home.
- The shape of the longest day you expect, from the first meeting to the last email.
- How many weeks it lasts, and whether it runs into weekends.
- Whether it includes travel, Ramadan or the school holidays.
Choose the gym for where the season puts you
| If the season puts you… | The gym that survives it… |
|---|---|
| In your own office until late | Sits on the drive home and is still open after your latest likely exit |
| At a client office that changes every few weeks | Belongs to the home side of your day, so a new site never moves your gym |
| At your desk at home, on calls into the evening | Is the easiest one to reach from home, with parking you never hunt for |
| Away for part of it | Has freeze terms that cover the trip, plus a routine you can take with you |
| In meetings from first thing | Opens early enough for a session before the working day starts |
If client sites and trips shape your whole year, the consultants' guide plans for site weeks, travel and quieter spells as three separate modes.
Join with enough runway
The first weeks at a new gym are the most fragile: a new route, a new locker routine, a floor you do not know yet. Get them out of the way while your hours are still normal.
- Six weeks out: shortlist two or three gyms and tour each at the hour you expect to train during the season, which may not be your current hour.
- Four weeks out: join and train your normal plan, so the drive and the floor stop needing any thought.
- Two weeks out: rehearse the season's version of a session at the season's slot, and time the whole visit from leaving your desk to getting back.
- The week before: put a spare kit bag in the car, and agree at home who covers the school run or dinner on the nights you train.
- If the season starts in less than three weeks, consider joining once it ends and keeping a short home routine until then.
What the gym has to handle in a crunch
- Hours that reach past the latest night and before the earliest morning you expect, with Friday checked too if the season eats your weekends.
- A quick arrival: parking without a hunt, a short walk in and a locker that opens in seconds.
- A way to look presentable for a late meeting, meaning a mirror, a hairdryer and somewhere to change. Showers and towels vary between gyms, so ask about both.
- Stations grouped tightly, so a short session involves no wandering between zones.
- Some breathing room at your late hour, so you are not queueing for kit at the end of a long day.
For the session itself, the 30-minute template fits one main lift and a short circuit into half an hour.
Set the season's floor in advance
Decide now, while you can still think clearly, what counts as a training week once the season starts. Hours tend to climb past the plan, so set a floor you can hit in the worst week and count anything above it as a bonus. The year-round version of this idea, with a minimum week and a good week, is in the routine for busy professionals.
Here is how an auditor with fieldwork from January to March might set her floor. Change the phases to fit your own season.
| Phase | Sessions a week | What they look like |
|---|---|---|
| Normal weeks before fieldwork | Three | Full sessions while the new gym becomes routine |
| Fieldwork weeks | Two | Half-hour sessions on the drive home from the client |
| Reporting deadline week | One | A single anchor session, with walking calls on the other days |
| The week after sign-off | Two | Easy sessions to get back to the full plan |
The floor is not a target to beat. Hitting it every week keeps your place in the routine, which is what makes the restart easy.
Membership terms for a heavy season
- Can the start date be set for the day I actually begin training?
- If the season includes travel, what are the freeze rules, and how much notice do they need?
- If I buy coaching, do unused sessions expire, and can they move to after the season?
- Does my tier include anything that helps in a crunch, such as coached programming that writes the short sessions for me?
To judge value over the season, take the part of the fee that falls inside it, call it X, and divide by the sessions you expect. If X buys eight short sessions, each costs X divided by eight. The bigger return comes afterwards, when you carry on rather than starting again from nothing.
Where RPM fits a busy season
RPM is one club, up on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. You park free on site and take the lift. It keeps early-morning and late-evening opening, with shorter Friday hours, as shown below.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
The changing area has keypad lockers, and the grooming hub has a vanity area with hairdryers and products for heading straight back to work. Showers and towels are not confirmed, so ask. Engine adds coached programming and Atelier centres on one-to-one coaching, which matters if planning the short sessions is the part you skip. RPM only suits a busy season if Al Manhal sits on the route that season puts you on, so check that first, then book the free guided tour at the hour you expect to train.
Questions, answered.
Should I join a gym just before my busiest month?
Only if you can fit three or four normal weeks in first. If the season starts sooner, join once it ends and keep a short routine at home until then, so your first weeks at the new gym are not your hardest.
Is a membership worth paying for in a season when I will barely train?
Often, if it keeps the habit alive. Work out the cost per session for the season, then weigh it against the weeks it would take to rebuild your routine from scratch afterwards.
What if the busy season runs longer than planned?
Keep the floor going and review at the original end date. If it stretches by more than a few weeks, check the floor is still realistic and ask whether the terms allow a freeze.
Can colleagues train together during a crunch?
It can help, because a session booked with a colleague is harder to skip. If your employer is interested, RPM's corporate arrangements are tailored to each organisation and confirmed on enquiry.
