Choosing a gym for your hotel stay

Judge each gym by the trip from your hotel door to its training floor at the hour you would train, not by how it looks on a map. Use the hotel gym for whatever it can handle, and travel only for the sessions it cannot. Women who want a women-only space should confirm that a visitor's pass covers it. RPM is one club, in Al Manhal, so it may suit your hotel or be a long way off: measure it like any other option.

Measure the trip from the hotel door

Abu Dhabi's hotels are spread out: along the Corniche, in the city centre, on the islands of Al Maryah, Saadiyat and Yas, and out by the airport and ADNEC. Two buildings that look a short hop apart on a map can be separated by a bridge, a one-way grid or a U-turn several junctions on.

So test the real trip before you choose. Set the departure time in your maps app to your training hour, check the way back as well, and add the parts the app leaves out.

Part of the tripWhat to check
Lobby to carHow long a taxi takes to turn up at that hour, and where ride-hailing pickups wait
The driveTraffic at your hour, any bridge, and whether the return is slower than the way out
Drop-offWhether the driver can stop at the right entrance of the building
Kerb or car park to the floorLifts, levels and the walk inside a complex
The ride backWaiting outside in summer, hot from training, for a car

Then confirm access for your date before you set off. For RPM, the day pass page explains what the team confirms: whether a pass is available, the price, what it includes and which section it covers.

What the hotel gym will not give you

Start with the gym you already have. If it covers your session, the shortest trip is the lift. Hotel gyms differ a lot, so ask the front desk for photos or an equipment list. These are the gaps that most often send guests elsewhere:

  • Heavy free weights: racks, barbells and plates, and dumbbells beyond a moderate weight.
  • Enough machines and cables for a full lower-body or upper-body session.
  • Room for conditioning: a turf lane, sleds, ropes, bags.
  • Coaching or classes, for anyone who trains better with someone in charge.
  • A women-only area. Most hotel gyms are shared.
  • Recovery rooms beyond a basic sauna, which may sit in the hotel spa under separate rules.

If your session needs none of these, stay in. If it needs one or two, look further afield.

When a drive is worth it

A trip makes sense when the session matters more to you than the time and the fare.

Usually worth the tripUsually not
Your main lifting day, which needs racks and platesA light cardio day the hotel treadmill can cover
A stay of three nights or more, with time to planArrival day, after a long flight
A coached session or class you would miss at homeA gap of under an hour between meetings
A women-only space the hotel cannot offerA route at your hour that crosses a bridge at rush hour

For three nights, a common pattern is one or two trips to a full gym and hotel sessions on the other days. The business trip guide lays out a three-day version.

Getting there without a car

  • Official Abu Dhabi taxis wait at most hotels, and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem operate across the city.
  • Ask the concierge to give the driver the exact building and level, not only the area name. Inside a large complex, the drop-off point matters.
  • Save the gym's map pin before you leave and check it against the building, as set out in how to verify a gym's location.
  • Book the car back before you finish your last set, so you are not waiting outside in the heat.
  • Driving a hire car? Ask the company how it bills road tolls on the bridges, and find out where the gym's car park is.

For women travelling

Abu Dhabi has many women-only gyms, and women-only sections inside mixed clubs. For a visitor, the question is whether short-term access reaches them.

  • Ask whether a day or weekly pass covers the women-only area, not only the mixed floor.
  • Ask how you get from the car park or drop-off to that area.
  • Ask whether female coaches are on hand if you want help with the equipment.
  • Check that the changing room and lockers for the women-only area are inside it.

At RPM, the Ladies section is for women only, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio, and female coaches on the roster work there. Men train in the Mixed section. Ask the team which section a pass covers before you book a car.

Settle it in one evening

With two or three candidates in front of you, three questions settle most stays.

  1. Does the trip at my training hour feel easy enough to repeat?
  2. Does the gym have what my main session needs and the hotel lacks?
  3. Has the gym confirmed in writing that I can train on my dates, in the section I need?

A gym that passes all three is your pick, whatever the map suggests. If none does, a well-planned week in the hotel gym beats a trip you dread.

RPM Gym is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking and a lift to Level 4. Depending on where you stay, the ride there may be short or long. Put it through the same three questions as any other gym.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Should I choose a hotel for its gym?

If training is a big part of your trip, check the hotel gym's photos before you book. For heavy lifting or a women-only space a hotel gym rarely matches a full club, so expect to make a trip either way.

Can my hotel arrange entry to an outside gym?

Ask, but do not rely on it. Arrangements between hotels and gyms vary and change, so deal with the gym directly before you go. At RPM, the team confirms day-pass availability, price and inclusions for your date.

Is walking to a gym realistic in summer?

Only for a short walk early in the morning or after dark. From May to September even a short midday walk tires you out before you start, so a taxi door to door is usually the better call.

How do I choose between two gyms with similar trips?

Take the one with the equipment for your main session and written confirmation of access. If they are still level, pick the one with easier parking or a simpler drop-off.

Do I need to book a gym visit on the same day?

Ask the gym. Some take walk-in visitors, others want a booking or payment in advance. Message the day before so you know which.
