What the higher price usually bundles
Premium and full-service are marketing words, so start by listing what they stand for at each club. The bundle is usually built from the services below, and each one is worth paying for only under certain conditions. If you are still deciding between clubs in general, how to choose a gym in Abu Dhabi sets out the wider criteria.
| Part of the bundle | What you get | Worth paying for if |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Room around the equipment and shorter queues at busy hours | You train at peak times and hate waiting |
| Coaching | Programming or one-to-one sessions inside the membership | You would otherwise pay a coach separately |
| Recovery rooms | A sauna, steam room or cold plunge in the building | You would use them most weeks |
| Grooming and changing | A vanity area with hairdryers, plus lockers | You go straight to work or out afterwards |
| Studios and classes | Pilates, boxing or group sessions on site | You would otherwise join a second venue |
| Women-only space | A section for women with its own equipment | Privacy decides whether you train at all |
The unbundling test
Take each part of the bundle you would really use and ask what it would cost you elsewhere, in money and in time. A spa visit, a block of personal training sessions or a separate Pilates studio all have a price, and each adds another trip across town in the heat. Add up the ones you would buy anyway.
- If that total nearly matches the premium, the premium is likely worth it.
- If most of the bundle is things you would never buy, you are paying for other people's habits.
- If one service carries the decision, such as coaching, compare the premium gym with a basic gym plus that one service.
Comparing membership value has a worksheet for putting each club's total on the same basis.
Testing the price before you pay it
How do I know if a premium gym is actually worth the price?
Ask for the inclusions of the tier you would buy, in writing, and strike out anything you would not use. Visit at your usual hour to see whether the space and staffing match the price. Then compare what remains with what those services would cost you separately. If the gym will not list its inclusions, or the extras you value turn out to cost more on top, the premium is mostly in the lobby.
Some of what you pay for shows on a visit and some only appears once you are a member, so ask about both. For a full inclusions checklist, see what a premium membership should include.
| You can see it on a visit | Ask, because a visit will not show it |
|---|---|
| Crowding at your hour | How far ahead classes and coaching slots fill up |
| Equipment that is out of order or worn | How quickly broken equipment is repaired |
| Staff on the floor and at reception | How quickly the team answers a message |
| The state of the changing area | What happens to your membership if you travel all summer |
When the premium earns its price
- You train several times a week, so the cost spreads over many visits.
- You would pay for coaching anyway, and the tier includes the coaching you want.
- You go to the office or out straight after training and need a proper place to get ready.
- You use a sauna, steam room or ice bath most weeks and would otherwise pay for spa visits.
- You want a women-only section, or Pilates and lifting, under one membership.
If recovery is the deciding service, whether a gym with recovery facilities is worth it looks at that question on its own.
When it does not
- You mainly want a rack and some dumbbells, and the extras would go unused.
- The club is off your usual route, so you will go less often than you plan.
- You travel for long stretches and the contract does not let you freeze.
- The higher tier's extras are things you could add later, as and when you need them.
- The premium shows in the furniture rather than in the coaching, maintenance or space.
In those cases a simpler gym, or a lower tier at the same club, is often the better buy.
How RPM's offer lines up
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking and a lift up to the club. It has a Mixed section and a separate women-only Ladies section with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio. The training floor photos show plate-loaded machines, cable towers, a squat rack with colour bumper plates and cardio machines, and the functional area has a turf lane with a sled. There is a recovery suite with a Finnish sauna, an aroma steam room and an ice bath, a grooming hub with hairdryers and products, and keypad lockers in the changing area.
Membership comes in three tiers. Floor covers the training floor, Engine adds coached programming and Atelier is built around one-to-one coaching. Inclusions and prices are confirmed on enquiry rather than published online, so ask which tier includes the recovery suite and which sections each one covers. Heat and cold are not for everyone: if you have a heart or blood-pressure condition, are pregnant or take medication, speak to your doctor before using the sauna, steam room or ice bath. To see whether the bundle fits you, book a free guided tour at your usual hour and read about RPM's membership tiers.
Questions, answered.
Is a premium gym worth it for a beginner?
It can be, if the price includes coaching that teaches you the basics and builds your first plan. If it does not, a beginner pays for extras they are not ready to use. Ask what induction and coaching come with the tier.
Is a higher tier worth it at the same club?
Only if you will use what it adds. At RPM, Engine adds coached programming to the training floor and Atelier is built around one-to-one coaching, so the question is how much coaching you want. Ask for each tier's inclusions in writing.
Can I try the services before paying for a premium membership?
Ask. A free guided tour shows you the club but is not a workout. Some clubs offer a day or weekly pass, but whether one is available, what it costs and what it includes all change, so confirm them with the team first.
Is premium worth it if I travel every summer?
Only if the contract lets you freeze or pause while you are away. Ask how freezing works, how far ahead you must request it and whether it costs anything.
Does a premium price mean better coaches?
Not by itself. Ask each coach about their background and check any qualification with the body that issued it. A coach who assesses you before writing a plan tells you more than the price does.
