A long commute turns one session into an outing
Al Shamkha is a suburb on the mainland, and the route box rates the drive from there to RPM, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, a long commute. Driven on a weekday evening just to train, it rarely becomes a habit. As one planned outing a week, it can. So the question narrows: is one visit a week, for coaching and recovery, worth the time it takes while a gym in your own area handles everything else? For the general checks, read RPM's single address, and what to check before a long drive.
If you train for general fitness, like your current gym and want no coach, the answer is probably no. The rest of this page is for people who feel something is missing.
Price the visit in hours, with your own figures
Distance is only part of the cost: parking and changing take time too, and so do recovery and the drive back. Drive the trip once at your real hour, then fill in the brackets. The route box gives only the mapped minimum.
Your time ledger
| Part of the outing | Weekend visit to RPM | A session at a gym in your area |
|---|---|---|
| Driving there | [your drive in] | [your local drive] |
| Parking, then up to the floor | [your time] | [your usual time] |
| Training | [the coached session] | [your usual session] |
| Recovery | [sauna, steam room or ice bath, if your tier covers it] | [if your gym has any] |
| Changing | [your time] | [your time] |
| Driving home | [your drive back] | [your local drive] |
| Time away from home | [total A] | [total B] |
The gap between A and B is the price of the trip. Note beside it what the visit gave you that B could not.
Keep the sheet for a month. If the gap keeps buying coaching you would not get otherwise, or recovery you look forward to, the trip is paying its way. If not, keep it local. The guide for people who train mainly at weekends covers weeks built around one or two longer sessions.
What the visit should contain
A visit that costs this much time should do more than one job:
- Arrive with notes from your local sessions: loads, sets, and any movement that felt wrong.
- Spend the main part with a coach. Personal training at RPM is planned around your goal and schedule, so use it for the lifts you find hardest and for next week's plan.
- If your coach wants a finisher, use the turf lane and sled or the battle ropes in the functional area.
- End in the recovery suite, with its Finnish sauna, aroma steam room and ice bath. Check with the team whether your tier or pass covers it.
- Get ready at the grooming hub's vanity area before the drive home.
Not everyone should use the heat and cold rooms. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition, ask your doctor before using the sauna, steam room or ice bath, and stop if you feel unwell.
Women can spend the whole visit in the women-only Ladies section, which has its own equipment and the Pilates studio, and where female coaches from the roster work. Men train in the Mixed section, and the tier decides which sections a membership covers.
Choosing a rhythm you will keep
| Rhythm | Suits | Ask the coach for |
|---|---|---|
| Every weekend | Steady strength or technique work | A written plan for the local days |
| Every other weekend | Technique checks and a fresh plan | Fewer, clearer changes, and notes to take home |
| A short block of weekly visits | A restart after time off, or an event to prepare for | A goal for the block, and what follows it |
| Now and then | Recovery after a hard stretch, or a one-off review | One session with one purpose |
Tiers matter here. Floor covers the training floor. Engine layers coached programming on top, while Atelier centres on one-to-one coaching. Inclusions, recovery-suite access among them, and prices are confirmed on enquiry.
Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, and timing the weekend drive
The mapped route from Al Shamkha follows Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street onto the island and ends on Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street (Airport Road) at AD HUB, with free on-site parking and a lift up to Level 4. The figures start from one mapped point in Al Shamkha, so time your own trip from your front door.
Try a weekend morning first, and notice how the drive home feels after the recovery suite. Friday is harder, because the club keeps shorter hours and Friday prayers take up the middle of the day.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
For a first visit, book the free guided tour at the weekend hour you expect to use. It is a walk-through with the team rather than a workout, so ask separately how to arrange a first coached session.
Questions, answered.
Does RPM have a club in Al Shamkha?
No. RPM trains people in one place: Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, on the island. Nothing in Al Shamkha carries the name.
Can I come only for the recovery suite at the weekend?
Ask the team: access depends on your tier or pass, and pass terms change. If you have a heart condition or are pregnant, speak to a doctor first.
Will one coached session a week make a difference?
It can keep your technique and your plan on course, provided the local sessions happen in between. No coach can promise a result, and the other days count as much as the coached hour.
Can two of us share one weekend trip?
Yes, and sharing spreads the time cost over two sessions. Men use the Mixed section on a shared trip. A woman can train there too, or in the Ladies section, depending on her tier.
What should I pack for a long weekend visit?
Kit, a full change of clothes and, from May to September, water for the drive. Keypad lockers in the changing area hold your things. Ask about showers and towels before counting on them.
