Five signs the gym in your building has run its course
A residents' gym in a downtown tower has real advantages: no car, no parking, a lift ride in your trainers. It suits the first months of training well. The trouble starts when your training outgrows the room. These are the usual signs, and once two or three of them apply, it is worth checking how RPM fits your trip and your week.
- The heaviest dumbbells are no longer heavy enough, and there is no rack or barbell to move on to.
- You would like a coach to check your squat or write you a programme, and nobody in the building does that.
- A woman in your household would rather train away from men, and the building has one shared room.
- The room is mostly treadmills, so strength work means waiting for the single bench.
- You want heat or cold after a hard session, and the building has nothing for it.
Building gym or RPM, row by row
| What you need | A typical tower gym | At RPM |
|---|---|---|
| Heavier free weights | Often a dumbbell rack that stops short | A squat rack with colour bumper plates, fixed barbells, benches, plates and dumbbells |
| Machines | A cable station or a multigym, if any | Plate-loaded machines such as a leg press and a pulldown, plus cable towers with several stations |
| Coaching | Rarely offered | Personal training with RPM's coaches. The Engine tier adds coached programming and Atelier is built around coaching |
| Space for women only | Rare in a residents' gym | The Ladies section, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio |
| Heat and cold | Rarely offered | Finnish sauna, aroma steam room and ice bath. Ask which tiers include them |
| Getting there | A lift ride | A short drive, free parking at AD HUB, then the lift to Level 4 |
| Cost | Often bundled into rent or service charges | Membership priced on enquiry, as RPM does not publish prices online |
Tower gyms vary a lot from building to building. Walk through yours with this table before you decide what is missing. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition, ask your doctor before using the sauna or ice bath.
Parking downtown, and parking at AD HUB
Downtown, the hard part of an evening session is often the car rather than the gym. Street bays are usually paid and fill up once the offices empty, and getting home late can mean another hunt for a space. AD HUB Sports Complex has its own free on-site parking, and the lift takes you up to Level 4, so at least one end of the trip is settled before you set off.
The mapped route from Al Danah follows Sultan Bin Zayed The First Street (Muroor Road) for most of the way. The route box at the top of this page gives the figures. At the evening peak, allow more than they suggest.
How the week runs: weeknights, Fridays, weekends
| When | What downtown is like | A plan that tends to hold |
|---|---|---|
| Straight after office hours | The streets are at their busiest | Go home, eat, and drive over once the rush thins |
| Later in the evening | Calmer roads and easier parking | Your regular slot, two or three nights a week |
| Friday | Midday prayers and shorter club hours | A morning session, or one in the early evening |
| Saturday and Sunday | No office rush, more family plans | One longer visit, with time for the recovery suite if your tier includes it |
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
Opening runs from early morning to late evening, with shorter hours on Fridays, and the times can change in Ramadan. Check with the team before you build your week around a late slot. For more on evening timing, see training after work in Abu Dhabi.
Before you sign anything
Start with a free guided tour. It is a walk-through with a member of the team rather than a workout, so use it to check what the table above raised for you: the free weights, the Ladies section if it matters in your household, and which tier covers which sections.
- Which sections and facilities each tier covers, and the current price, which is shared on enquiry.
- When the training floor is quietest at the hours you would come.
- Whether a day pass is available right now and what it includes. Availability and price are confirmed by the team.
- Whether towels are provided, so you know what to pack.
Questions, answered.
Is there an RPM branch in Al Danah?
No. There is one RPM club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. From Al Danah you drive there, and the route box above shows the mapped trip.
Can I keep my building gym and still join RPM?
Yes. One workable split is easy cardio downstairs on busy days, and strength or coached sessions at RPM when your evening is clear.
Someone in my household wants a space for women only. How does that work?
The Ladies section is for women only, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio, and female coaches on the roster work there. The Mixed section is where men train. Which sections a membership covers depends on the tier, so confirm it for each person.
Is the drive worth it if I only train twice a week?
It is if those two sessions use what your building lacks, such as a rack, a coach or the recovery suite. If you mostly walk on a treadmill, the tower gym may be all you need for now.
Will I find parking in the evening?
AD HUB has free on-site parking, then a lift to Level 4. How full the car park is varies with the hour, so ask the team about your usual time when you visit.
