Why the downtown grid makes a habit hard to keep
Al Markaziyah, whose Arabic name means "the central", is part of downtown Abu Dhabi on the main island. Living in the grid has obvious upsides, and a few that work against a training habit: traffic lights every block, kerbside bays that are often full when you get back, and a long stretch of the year when walking anywhere at midday is hard work.
None of that stops you training. It just means the routine has to be planned around the grid rather than squeezed into it. The answer is usually a fixed slot, a trip out when the streets are quiet, and a gym where parking is not a gamble. To see how that works from your street, start with how to check RPM against your own trip.
Where the figures on this page start
The trip from Al Markaziyah depends on which block you leave from. The route box at the top of this page measures from one mapped point in the western part of the district, the Abu Dhabi Chamber building, rather than from your address. If you live towards the far end, your trip will be different, so use the box as a starting guide and time the drive yourself.
By the mapped estimates it is a short drive, joining Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street (Airport Road) for the run into Al Manhal. At office rush hours, allow more than the box shows.
Leave the grid at the right moment: a six-step routine
- Pick two or three fixed slots a week and book them in your calendar like appointments you cannot move.
- Leave when the grid is calmest, early in the morning before offices open or later in the evening once they have emptied.
- If you drive, keep a packed bag in the car, so the session never depends on going back upstairs first.
- Take parking off the list of worries: AD HUB has free on-site parking and a lift to Level 4.
- Use a weekend morning for your longest session of the week, when there is no office rush to beat.
- From May to September, train indoors and keep the walk between door and car as short as you can.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
The club opens early and stays open late, with shorter hours on Fridays, and Ramadan can shift the times. Check with the team before you fix a slot at either end of the day.
Room to move once you are out
Downtown routines tend to make do. This is what changes when you train at RPM instead.
| If your routine has been | What RPM has instead |
|---|---|
| Bodyweight circuits in a small flat | A training floor with a squat rack, bumper plates, plate-loaded machines and cable towers |
| Laps of the block in the heat | Treadmills, cross-trainers, an upright bike and spin bikes indoors |
| Workout videos with nobody checking your form | Personal training, or coached programming in the Engine tier |
| Nowhere to hit pads or push a sled | A functional area with a turf lane, sled, battle ropes, heavy bags and slam balls |
| No space for women only in your building | The Ladies section, for women only, with the Pilates studio |
The functional area is used for fitness boxing and HYROX-style training. RPM is independent, not an official HYROX partner or venue, and sparring is something to ask about rather than assume.
Group classes run in both sections and the timetable changes, so ask the team what is on at the hours you can make.
Your first visit from downtown
Book the free guided tour for a weekday evening or a weekend morning, the hours you are most likely to train. It is a walk-through with a member of the team, not a workout. If you would rather have the directions and the building in your phone first, the contact page has the address and map.
- Ask which sections each tier covers, and get the current price on enquiry.
- Look at the functional area and the free weights at the hour you would come.
- Ask where to leave your bag. The changing area has keypad lockers.
- Ask whether a day pass is available if you want to train before deciding. The team confirms availability and price.
Questions, answered.
Is RPM in Al Markaziyah?
No. RPM has one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. From Al Markaziyah it is a short drive, and the mapped estimates are in the route box above.
Why is the trip mapped from the Abu Dhabi Chamber building?
The figures need one fixed starting point, and this one is a mapped building in western Al Markaziyah. Your own trip depends on where your block is, so use the box as a rough guide.
I don't drive. Can I still make it work?
The route box gives driving figures only. If you plan to come another way, test the trip at your training hour before you commit, and remember that summer heat makes long walks hard going.
When is the training floor quietest?
It varies through the week. Ask the team on your tour which hours are quietest on the training floor and, if it matters to you, in the Ladies section.
Will the routine still work in Ramadan?
Opening hours can change during Ramadan, and downtown traffic often builds in the hour before iftar. Confirm the hours with the team, then time the trip again at your new slot.
