What your result means

Per side is the number to read. Plates go on in pairs, so the tool takes the bar off your target, halves what's left, and tells you what to slide onto one end.

Which totals exist at all depends on your smallest pair. Every load you can build is the bar plus a multiple of twice that plate: 2.5 kg steps if you have 1.25s, 5 kg steps if 2.5 is the smallest, 10 kg steps if nothing goes under 5. That's why 102.5 kg is routine in one gym and impossible in another.

When your target isn't one of those, the tool says so and gives the nearest load below rather than rounding silently. Ask for less than the bar weighs and it tells you that too: a bar problem, not a plate problem.

How it is calculated

Pair-loaded plate fill, largest plate first

Per side = (target total − bar) ÷ 2 Fill one side by repeatedly taking the largest plate that still fits, from 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 and 0.5 kg, stopping at the smallest pair you said you have. Actual total = bar + (per side × 2)

What it assumes

  • Every plate size from your smallest pair up to 25 kg is available, in as many as the fill asks for.
  • The bar carries the same plates on both ends. Nothing here loads a bar asymmetrically.
  • The bar weighs what you selected. Nothing here checks that against the bar in your hands.

Units and rounding

  • Kilograms throughout. Pound plates are not modelled.
  • The target accepts half-kilogram steps; the bar and the smallest pair are dropdowns.
  • Per side is one end of the bar. The plate count is for the whole bar, both ends together.

Worked example

A 102.5 kg squat on a 20 kg bar, in two gyms with different plate sets.

  1. (102.5 − 20) ÷ 2 = 41.25 kg per side.
  2. Smallest pair 1.25 kg: 25 + 15 + 1.25 = 41.25. Six plates on the bar, actual total 102.5 kg.
  3. Smallest pair 2.5 kg: 25 + 15 = 40, and the last 1.25 has nowhere to go. Four plates, actual total 100 kg.

Same target, same bar, 2.5 kg apart. In the second gym the tool reports 102.5 kg as unreachable with 2.5 kg as your smallest pair, and hands you 100 kg instead. Move the programme onto the steps your plates make.

Limitations

  • It assumes the plates exist. A 200 kg pull comes back as three 25s and a 15 per side, and whether there are six 25 kg plates free at that moment is not something arithmetic can see.
  • It fills largest first rather than searching. Ask for 100.5 kg with 0.5 kg plates in the set and it returns 100: a 25 and a 15 leave a quarter of a kilo per side, and nothing goes that small. A fussier loading reaches it. Nobody wants to build it.
  • Collars are not in the total. Spring clips barely register; the heavier competition collars do, and they sit outside this arithmetic.
  • Kilograms only. A bar loaded from a mixed kilogram and pound set matches nothing on this page, which is a common way to lift a number you didn't intend.

What to do next

  • Load one end, count it, then copy it. Almost every misload is one plate out on one side, and it doesn't announce itself until the bar is off the rack.
  • If your programme keeps producing weights your plates can't make, round the working sets to the step your gym has and keep it for the whole block.
  • Check the bar before assuming 20 kg. It moves every set in the session, and it is the one input here that nothing downstream corrects.

What plates do I need for 100 kg?

On a 20 kg bar, 40 kg a side: a 25 and a 15. If the 15s are all out, two 20s do the same job. Four plates either way.

Does the bar count towards the weight?

Yes, and skipping it is the most common loading error there is. Every figure here is the total including the bar, so 60 kg on a 20 kg bar is 20 a side, not 30.

Why won't it give me the exact weight I asked for?

Because plates don't go that fine. Loads climb in steps of twice your smallest pair, so with 2.5 kg plates a 20 kg bar makes 25, 30 and 35 with nothing in between. The tool gives you the nearest load below and how far short it lands.

What if my target is lighter than the bar?

It tells you what the bar alone weighs instead of pretending. Wanting 15 kg on a 20 kg bar isn't a loading question, it's a bar question, and the fix is the 15, 10 or 7 kg option.
