What your result means

Lean body mass is everything you weigh that isn't fat: muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue and the water in all of it. It is not a muscle-mass measurement, and the difference matters. Roughly half your lean mass is skeletal muscle; the rest is structure and fluid you can't train.

The number's real use is as a denominator. Protein needs for lean, resistance-trained people in a deficit are expressed per kilogram of fat-free mass rather than bodyweight, and drug and anaesthetic dosing works the same way. Anywhere a figure needs to ignore fat tissue, this is the figure it uses.

Its second use is directional. In a deficit, weight falling while lean mass holds is the outcome you want, and weight falling with lean mass is the one that means the deficit is too steep or protein and training are too light. One weigh-in tells you nothing about that. Two months of them tells you a lot.

How it is calculated

Direct partition from a known body fat percentage

Fat mass = weight × (body fat % ÷ 100) Lean body mass = weight − fat mass

What it assumes

  • The body fat percentage you enter is assumed to be accurate. It almost certainly carries a few points of error, and every one of those points transfers straight into the lean figure.
  • Lean body mass is treated as a single compartment. It is really bone, organs, muscle and water, and the proportions shift with hydration and training age.
  • No equation is applied here beyond the split. Where the body-fat calculator estimates a percentage from circumferences, this takes the percentage as given.

Units and rounding

  • Weight in kilograms; body fat as a percentage between 3 and 65.
  • Results in kilograms to one decimal place.
  • A percentage of zero returns no result, because a partition needs something to partition.

Worked example

An 85 kg man who has estimated his body fat at 20%.

  1. Fat mass = 85 × 0.20 = 17.0 kg
  2. Lean body mass = 85 − 17.0 = 68.0 kg

68 kg of lean mass. If a three-point measurement error puts his true body fat at 17% or 23%, his lean mass is 70.6 kg or 65.5 kg instead — a 5 kg swing from a rounding error, which is why the trend matters more than the reading.

Limitations

  • Every bit of error in the body fat percentage lands here. This calculator adds no accuracy of its own; it inherits whatever the input carried.
  • Lean mass is not muscle mass. Two people with identical lean figures can carry noticeably different amounts of skeletal muscle depending on frame size and bone density.
  • It moves with hydration. Water is part of lean mass, so a dehydrated reading understates it and a carb-loaded, well-hydrated one flatters it, without any tissue changing.
  • There's no healthy range to compare against. Unlike body fat percentage, lean mass has no population bands worth publishing, because it scales with height and frame.
  • Gaining lean mass and gaining muscle are not the same claim. Early in training, and after any large intake change, some of the gain is water and glycogen.

What to do next

  • Use it as a denominator, not a scoreboard. If you're lean, training hard and in a sustained deficit, the protein calculator will take a body fat percentage and show the fat-free-mass range that applies to that situation.
  • Track it alongside weight rather than instead of weight. The two together tell you what a cut is actually costing you; either one alone doesn't.
  • Re-measure under the same conditions every four to six weeks. Anything more often is reading measurement noise as progress.
  • If your body fat percentage came from a guess rather than a measurement, fix that first. This number can't be better than the one it came from.

What is lean body mass?

Everything you weigh minus your fat: muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue and body water. It's sometimes called fat-free mass, and the two terms are used interchangeably in most training contexts.

Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass?

No, and confusing them overstates how much muscle you carry. Skeletal muscle is roughly half of lean body mass in an adult; the rest is bone, organs and fluid. A calculator that reports 68 kg of lean mass is not reporting 68 kg of muscle.

What is a good lean body mass?

There isn't a published band, because the figure scales with height and skeletal frame. A 165 cm and a 190 cm adult at the same body fat percentage will have very different lean masses and both can be perfectly healthy. Direction over time is the meaningful reading, not the absolute number.

How do I increase lean body mass?

Progressive resistance training, enough protein, and enough total calories — a surplus if you want it to happen at any speed. Recomposition at maintenance is possible, particularly for beginners and people returning after a break, but it's slower.

Why did my lean mass drop after a week of dieting?

Most often water and glycogen rather than tissue. Cutting carbohydrate sharply drops stored glycogen and the water bound to it, and both sit inside the lean compartment. Look at a four-to-six week trend before drawing any conclusion.

Losing weight is easy. Losing weight while keeping this number is the job.
