What your result means

The finish time is simply your pace multiplied by your distance, converted into hours, minutes and seconds. It answers the planning question directly: if I hold this pace, when do I finish?

The average speed alongside it is the same information in km/h, which is the unit treadmills use. If you're converting a road-running target onto a treadmill, that's the number you set.

How it is calculated

Constant-pace time–distance relationship

Finish time (minutes) = distance (km) × pace (min/km). Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km).

What it assumes

  • Pace is held constant for the whole distance. Real races rarely are. This is a target, not a prediction of how the effort will actually be distributed.
  • The distance is the distance you actually cover. GPS watches routinely over-read on bends and under tree cover, which is why a watch can show a faster pace than the official race clock.
  • No adjustment is made for terrain, heat, humidity or wind. In Abu Dhabi's summer conditions, a pace that works in January won't produce the same effort in July.

Units and rounding

  • Distance is entered in kilometres; pace is entered in minutes per kilometre as a decimal, so 5 minutes 30 seconds is 5.5.
  • The result is broken into hours, minutes and seconds.
  • A pace or distance of zero returns a dash rather than a number, at every row. Publishing a confident zero for an impossible input was a real defect on this page until it was fixed.

Worked example

A 10 km run at a target pace of 5:30 per kilometre.

  1. Convert the pace to a decimal: 5 min 30 s = 5.5 min/km
  2. Total time = 10 × 5.5 = 55 minutes
  3. As a duration: 55:00
  4. Average speed = 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.9 km/h

A 55-minute finish, at an average speed of 10.9 km/h. That is the number to set on a belt to cover the same ground in the same time — which is not the same as the same effort, for the reasons under Limitations.

Limitations

  • This is arithmetic, not a performance prediction. It tells you what a pace produces, not what you can hold it.
  • Predicting a race time at a new distance from a shorter one needs a fatigue model such as Riegel's. A flat pace multiplication will overestimate what you can hold as the distance rises.
  • Treadmill speed and outdoor pace aren't equivalent efforts. A flat belt removes wind resistance, which is part of why a 1% incline is a common adjustment.
  • Heat and humidity change what a pace costs. In Gulf summer conditions, holding a winter pace is a substantially harder effort, not the same one.
  • Converting between minutes-per-kilometre and minutes-per-mile is a real source of error: 5:00/km is 8:03/mile, not 8:00.

What to do next

  • Work backwards from a goal time rather than forwards from a pace: decide the finish you want, then check whether the pace it demands is one you've actually run.
  • Take the pace to a treadmill in km/h if you're training indoors through the summer, and add an incline if you're matching an outdoor effort.
  • Check the pace against a recent time trial at a shorter distance before committing to it for a longer one.
  • Build the target from splits you have held in training, not from the time you would like to run.

How do I convert 5:30 per kilometre into a decimal?

Divide the seconds by 60 and add them to the minutes: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, so 5:30 becomes 5.5. Likewise 5:45 is 5.75 and 5:15 is 5.25.

What pace do I need for a sub-60-minute 10K?

Just under 6:00 per kilometre. 6:00 exactly produces a 60:00 finish, so a target of 5:55 gives you a small buffer for the start and any distance your watch adds.

How do I convert pace per kilometre to pace per mile?

Multiply by 1.609. A 5:00/km pace is 8:03 per mile, and 6:00/km is 9:39 per mile. Rounding to a flat 8:00 or 9:30 introduces close to a minute of error over ten miles.

What speed on the treadmill matches my outdoor pace?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per kilometre: 5:30/km is 10.9 km/h. Many runners add a 1% incline to approximate the wind resistance a treadmill removes.

Can I use my 5K pace to predict my 10K time?

Not by doubling it. You can't hold 5K pace for twice the distance. Race-time prediction uses a fatigue exponent rather than flat multiplication, so expect roughly 15–20 seconds per kilometre slower over the longer distance, depending on training.

Why is my watch pace faster than the official race pace?

Race distances are measured along the shortest legal route, while a GPS watch records the line you actually ran plus its own error. Recording 10.15 km in a 10K is common, and it makes your average pace read faster than the clock says.
