  • Belt speed and outdoor pace are not the same effort. A belt removes wind resistance and the surface never varies, so the same number on the console and on the road are two different runs.

What your result means

Pace is speed turned upside down: 3,600 seconds in an hour, divided by the kilometres you cover in one. So 10 km/h is a 6:00 kilometre, 12 km/h is a 5:00 kilometre, and 14 km/h is 4:17. The console holds one form of that number and your training log wants the other.

The two imperial rows do different jobs. Miles per hour is a machine setting, for a console that reads in imperial; pace per mile is a plan figure, for a session written in miles. At 12 km/h those are 7.46 mph and an 8:03 mile, and swapping one for the other is the usual error.

The 5 km line turns a setting into a length of time before you commit to it. At 10 km/h that's thirty minutes on the belt; at 12 km/h it's 25:00. If the window is forty minutes, that row says whether the speed you fancied fits it.

What the page can't do is promise that the same number outdoors is the same run. Treadmill and overground running at a matching displayed speed have not been established as equivalent in effort, and the clearest physical reason is air resistance: outdoors you push through it, on a belt you don't. Pugh measured that cost on runners in 1970. Everything past that one mechanism is still argued over, which is why nothing above has been adjusted to compensate for it.

How it is calculated

Pace (seconds per km) = 3600 ÷ speed (km/h) Pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609344 Speed (mph) = speed (km/h) ÷ 1.609344 Time for 5 km = pace per km × 5 No term for incline, air, surface or temperature. This is a unit conversion and it is only a unit conversion.

What it assumes

  • The display is taken at face value. If the belt isn't turning at the speed it claims, every row here is wrong by the same proportion, and no arithmetic on this page can detect that.
  • The speed is held for the whole distance. The 5 km row is that one setting run start to finish, so an interval session will not match a single line of output.
  • Incline is not in the arithmetic, and it does not belong there. A belt at 10 km/h covers a kilometre in six minutes whether the deck is flat or lifted; what the lift changes is the cost of covering it, not the clock.
  • Air, heat, humidity and surface sit outside the conversion entirely, which is most of why the output is a pace rather than an effort.

Units and rounding

  • One field: belt speed in km/h, from 1 to 25, in steps of 0.1.
  • If your console reads in mph, multiply by 1.609344 before entering it. The mph row then reads your figure back, which is a quick check that the conversion went the right way.
  • Pace comes back as minutes and seconds, per kilometre and per mile, rounded to the nearest second.
  • A mile is 1.609344 km and is used at that precision rather than rounded to 1.6.

Worked example

A treadmill set to 12.5 km/h.

  1. 3600 ÷ 12.5 = 288 seconds per kilometre, which is 4:48
  2. 288 × 1.609344 = 463 seconds per mile, which is 7:43
  3. 12.5 ÷ 1.609344 = 7.77 mph
  4. 288 × 5 = 1,440 seconds, so 5 km takes 24:00

A 4:48 kilometre, a 7:43 mile, 5 km in 24:00 if the belt never changes. The conversion is exact. What it is not is a claim that 4:48 on the road would feel like this one.

Limitations

  • Belt speed and road pace are not interchangeable efforts, and nothing here converts between them. Past air resistance the evidence does not collapse into a number, so rather than invent an approximate factor the tool applies none. The usual workaround is a small incline; the 1% adjustment carries conditions and has been challenged since it was published, and the pace calculator is where that literature belongs. Setting a grade also changes what the session was, which is a training decision rather than a unit conversion.
  • This is arithmetic, not a prediction. A 3:45 kilometre is what 16 km/h produces; holding it for one kilometre or for ten is a separate question, and one field of input was never going to answer it.
  • The conversion is exact; the number you feed it might not be. Everything here follows from the figure on the console, and whether the belt is genuinely moving at that speed is a property of the machine rather than of the sum. If two treadmills in the same room give you noticeably different paces for the same setting, the arithmetic is not what disagreed.

What to do next

  • Log both numbers, and keep the indoor sessions in their own column. The speed is what you reset next week; the pace is what lines up against the runs you did outside, without being the same measurement as them.

  • Check the mph row if the machine is imperial: enter 12.9 and it reads 8.02 back, which confirms you converted in the right direction.

What pace is 10 km/h on a treadmill?

A 6:00 kilometre — the roundest conversion on the dial. In the other units that's a 9:39 mile and 6.21 mph, and 5 km at that setting takes 30:00.

What speed do I set for a 5:00 per kilometre pace?

12 km/h exactly, which comes back as 5:00 per kilometre, 8:03 per mile and 7.46 mph. Paces that don't land on a round speed are the awkward ones: at that end of the dial a single step of the belt moves the kilometre by a few seconds, with 11.4 returning 5:16 and 11.5 returning 5:13. Pick the one on the correct side of your target and stop fiddling.

Is treadmill pace the same as running that pace outdoors?

It hasn't been established as the same effort, no. The one difference that is clearly documented is the air you work against outdoors and a belt takes away. Everything past it is unresolved: a 2019 meta-analysis of crossover trials found that some measures differ between treadmill and overground running while others do not, and that it can depend on the speed being tested. Which is why nobody can honestly hand you one conversion factor.

Does raising the incline change my pace?

No. Pace is belt speed, so a kilometre at 10 km/h takes six minutes whether the deck is flat or steep. What the incline changes is what those six minutes cost you. The console at my gym only reads in mph.

Multiply by 1.609344 and enter the result. Eight miles an hour is a shade under 12.9 km/h, so type 12.9 and you get a 4:39 kilometre, a 7:29 mile, and 8.02 mph back. That last figure drifting off a round 8 is the rounding to a tenth, not an error in the conversion.
