Flat life changes the gym question
Most expats in the centre of Abu Dhabi live in towers or low-rise blocks, many with a small residents' gym and a pool. Parking may be a space in the basement or a hunt along the street, and places that look a short walk away can feel much further for half the year. Those details decide how often you train far more than a long list of equipment.
Start with the checklist below, then compare the clubs that survive it. Read RPM's membership tiers at the same time, because which sections and facilities you can use depends on the tier you choose.
The central-living checklist
At home:
- Do you have an assigned space, or do you park on the street? If it is the street, will an evening trip to the gym cost you your space when you get back?
- If your street is paid or reserved for permit holders at certain hours, do the hours you would be out fit the rules?
- What does your building gym actually have, who maintains it, and when is it busy?
- Can kit live in the car, or does everything go up and down in the lift?
Between home and the gym:
- Could you walk it in January? Could you walk it in July?
- Is there shade on the way, or a wide road with long waits at the crossing?
- If you drive, does the route need a U-turn or a slow junction at your hour?
- If you take a taxi, what will the round trips cost you each week?
At the gym:
- Does the building have its own parking, or will you circle for a paid street space?
- How far is it from the car to the training floor, and is that walk under cover?
- Can you change and leave ready for work or dinner straight afterwards?
- Is there a section, and a crowd at your hour, that you are comfortable training with?
Any gym that fails the walk test in July and has no parking you can rely on will see you far less in summer. To weigh the trip against facilities and hours, see what makes a gym convenient in central Abu Dhabi.
Walking or driving: the season decides
The same trip changes character across the year. Plan for the hardest month, not the nicest one.
| Time of year | Walking to the gym | Driving to the gym |
|---|---|---|
| November to March | Pleasant for many people early and late in the day | Easy, if parking works at both ends |
| April and October | Workable early in the morning or after dark | The usual choice by midday |
| May to September | Hard going at most hours, and evenings can be humid | Door to door, ideally with covered parking at each end |
| Ramadan | After iftar, when it falls in the cooler months | Traffic is often heaviest in the hour before iftar |
If you walk in the heat, carry water and wear light clothes for the trip. If you feel dizzy or unwell, stop, get into shade or air conditioning and drink water, and seek medical help if it does not pass.
Your building gym and a club: split the jobs
A residents' gym is the one you can use in flip-flops at ten at night without moving the car. Give it the jobs it does well and take the rest elsewhere.
- The building gym: easy cardio, mobility, a quick dumbbell session, and anything you want to do late without driving.
- A club: heavy barbell work, coaching, classes, recovery facilities and, for many women, a women-only space with a full set of equipment.
- Both: two or three main sessions a week at the club, and the tower gym on the days in between or when traffic wins.
For a tower resident's week worked through in full, see a central club or the gym downstairs.
Finding people, not just equipment
Many expats in the centre live far from family, and a gym is one of the easier places to meet people who keep the same hours. Familiar faces come from repetition more than from size.
- Train at the same hour on the same days, so you see the same regulars.
- Join a class that runs weekly, and stick with one for a few months.
- Work with one coach rather than a different one each time.
- If you would rather train among women only, choose a club whose women-only section has its own equipment, not just a corner of the main floor.
How RPM sits in a central routine
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal on Abu Dhabi island. There is free on-site parking at AD HUB, with a lift up to the club, so the gym end of the trip has no street-parking question. Whether the home end works depends on where you live and how you travel, so test it at your hour.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
Men train in the Mixed section. Women can use the women-only Ladies section, which has its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio. Group classes run in both sections, with a timetable that changes, and the grooming hub has hairdryers and products for heading out afterwards. The recovery suite has a Finnish sauna, an aroma steam room and an ice bath, and which tiers include it is confirmed on enquiry. Heat and cold rooms do not suit everyone, so ask your doctor first if you are pregnant or have a heart condition.
Where it may not fit: if you do not drive and your building gym covers most of your plan, taxis to any club can cost more than the extra sessions are worth. Prices are not published online, so ask for them, and book a free guided tour at your training hour to test the trip both ways.
Questions, answered.
Do I need a car to train at a club in central Abu Dhabi?
No, but plan the trip. Many central residents use taxis, ride-hailing or the bus, especially in summer. Getting to a gym without a car covers the options and the walk at each end.
Will I lose my parking space if I drive to the gym?
With an assigned space, no. If you park on a busy street, an evening trip can mean circling when you get home, so train at an hour when spaces open up, or walk or take a taxi on those days.
My building has a gym and a pool. Do I need a club at all?
Only if your plan needs more than the building offers, such as heavy lifting, coaching, classes or a women-only section with full equipment. If it does not, the building gym and some outdoor walking in the cooler months may be enough.
When are central gyms quietest?
Many gyms are busiest straight after office hours. Ask each gym about its pattern and look at the floor at your hour. When gyms are least busy explains how to check.
