What a class-only model decides for you
In a class-only studio, the timetable sets your training days and the coach sets the session. Everyone in the room does roughly the same work. That is a relief if planning is the part you dislike. It becomes a limit when your goal needs its own progression, when your working hours move, or when you want to practise a lift between classes and there is no open floor to do it on.
An open gym floor lets coaching fit around you instead. A coach can see you one-to-one, write a plan you run alone or check in every few weeks, and the kit stays available between sessions. RPM's personal training works this way, in both sections.
Support models side by side
| Model | What you get | Coach contact | Suits | Ask before buying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One-to-one sessions | A coach beside you, correcting each set | Every coached session | Learning new lifts, or training for a goal with a date | Session length, package terms and cancellation rules |
| Coached programme | A written plan you run on your own, reviewed by a coach | Plan reviews, plus occasional sessions | People who can train alone but want the planning done for them | How often the plan changes, and how you send your log |
| Occasional check-in | A session every month or six weeks to fix technique and reset the plan | Every few weeks | Experienced trainers who want an outside eye | Whether single sessions can be booked |
| Classes plus open floor | Coached classes on some days and your own sessions on others | In class, unless you add sessions | People who like company but have goals of their own | Which classes your tier includes, and the current timetable |
| Class-only studio, for comparison | A set timetable of coached group sessions | In class, shared with the room | People who want every session planned for them | What you do between classes and in travel weeks |
Picking a model by what you most need
| What you need most | Start with | Then move to |
|---|---|---|
| Someone watching your technique | Four to six one-to-one sessions | A coached programme, with a check-in every month |
| A plan you trust | A coached programme | Check-ins before each new block |
| A reason to turn up | Weekly one-to-one sessions or fixed classes | One booked session a week once the habit holds |
| Variety and company | Classes on two days | One open-floor session a week from a written plan |
| Confirmation you are on track | An occasional check-in | Stay there while your log keeps moving |
If you are still deciding between coaching formats, personal training or group classes compares the two head to head.
What the open floor must offer for coached work
- Room for a coach and client to work without queueing for every station.
- The kit your programme uses, available at the hours you train alone as well as during sessions.
- Coaches who work in the section you use. For a woman who wants a female coach in a women-only space, that means a women-only section with its own equipment.
- A way to share your log with the coach between sessions.
- Classes that sit alongside the floor without taking over the area you need.
Changing models through the year
The right model rarely stays the same for twelve months. One pattern that fits the Abu Dhabi year:
- Autumn: a short run of one-to-one sessions to learn or relearn the main lifts as routines restart after summer.
- Winter: a coached programme, run mostly alone, while the calendar is steady.
- Ramadan: check-ins only, with shorter sessions after iftar.
- Summer: a travel plan written at the last check-in before you fly, and a restart session booked for your return.

Coach support at RPM, and where it may not fit
RPM is a full gym on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, not a class-only studio. Coaches on the roster cover strength, conditioning, Pilates, combat fitness and physique training across both sections. Group classes run in each section, and the timetable changes, so ask what is on. Awab Elsheikh in the Mixed section has a roster role that covers physique training and fitness classes.
- Floor covers the training floor. Engine adds coached programming. Atelier is built around one-to-one coaching. Inclusions and prices are confirmed on enquiry.
- Female coaches on the roster work in the Ladies section, which is for women only.
- The Pilates studio sits inside the Ladies section, so men cannot use it.
- Ask to meet a coach on the free guided tour. The tour is a walk-through, not a session.
Where it may not fit: if you want only classes, with no open floor at all, a studio built around its timetable may suit you better. Full-service gym or boutique studio weighs that choice.
Questions, answered.
Is a coached programme cheaper than one-to-one sessions?
The coach usually spends less time with you, so it tends to cost less, but compare the actual terms. RPM confirms coaching inclusions and prices on enquiry.
Can I mix classes with one-to-one sessions?
At a gym that runs both, yes. Ask which classes your tier includes and whether one-to-one sessions are booked separately.
Does a coach need to be there when I follow a coached programme?
No. You run the sessions yourself and the coach reviews your log. A session now and then to check technique keeps the plan honest.
What if I miss having a class to go to?
Add one class a week to your plan. Many people keep a single fixed class as an anchor and train alone for the rest of the week.
