New to Abu Dhabi: choosing the gym you will keep

Once your lease is signed and work has settled, choose a gym from your daily loop, not from a map search. Fix where your sessions will start, find which side of the bridges your loop runs on, pick your training hour, then shortlist two or three gyms and drive each one at that hour. Join on terms that fit a first year here: probation, a first summer and a contract that may change. RPM in Al Manhal suits newcomers whose loop passes it.

Settled enough to choose

The first weeks after a move are for short access you can drop, which gym access while relocating covers. This page picks up once the moving parts have stopped: the flat is rented, you have worked a few normal weeks, you know how you will get around, and any children have started school.

From here the choice is about a year or more, so it deserves a method rather than the first gym that appears in a search. Read RPM's membership tiers alongside it, and note the terms you will want in writing.

Seven steps from your new address to a gym

Work through the steps in order. Each one rules out options, so by step five you are testing two or three gyms, not twenty.

How do I choose a gym if I am new to Abu Dhabi?

Wait until home and work are fixed, then start from your daily route rather than a list of gyms. Decide where your sessions will start and at what hour, shortlist the gyms on that route that have what your training needs, and drive to each one at your training hour. Tour the strongest two at that hour, and join on terms that suit a first year: short enough to change if your job or flat does.

Reading a city you do not know yet

Newcomers misjudge the trip more than anything else, because a map shows distance and hides what decides a trip in Abu Dhabi.

  • Bridges. Abu Dhabi island, the mainland and islands such as Al Reem, Saadiyat and Yas are joined by bridges, and a gym that adds a crossing at rush hour is a different trip from one on your side.
  • School gates. Morning and mid-afternoon traffic builds around schools in term time and eases in the holidays, so test a weekday trip in term.
  • Car parks. Towers, malls and stand-alone buildings handle parking very differently. Where you leave the car decides the walk at each end.
  • U-turns. The island grid can turn a gym on the opposite side of a main road into a long loop, so check which side of the road the entrance faces.

Ask a colleague who has lived here a while to look at your shortlist. One conversation with someone who drives your route every day can save a month of trial.

A first membership for a first year

Your first year holds seasons you have not lived through: a first summer, when many residents travel and the heat moves all training indoors, and a first Ramadan, when working hours and gym hours often shift. Your job may also be in a probation period, and for many residents the visa is tied to the job. Terms that ignore all that can cost you.

How should I choose a gym membership after moving to Abu Dhabi?

Choose the shortest commitment you are comfortable with until probation ends, then move to a longer term if the gym has earned it. Before signing, ask what happens if you leave the UAE early, whether you can freeze for your first summer, and whether money paid on a short term counts towards a longer one. Ask your HR team about corporate rates or a wellness benefit first, and get every answer in writing.

  • Which ID do you need while my residency paperwork is in progress?
  • Does an annual term renew automatically, and when would I be told?
  • Can my partner join on the same terms, and which sections would each of us use?
  • Is there an exit clause if my employer moves me out of Abu Dhabi?

For the full agreement, clause by clause, use the membership contract checklist.

Where RPM fits a newcomer

RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal on Abu Dhabi island, with free on-site parking at AD HUB and a lift up to the floor. Put it through the same seven steps as any other gym: it fits if your daily loop passes Al Manhal at your training hour.

  • Sections: a Mixed section, where men train, and a women-only Ladies section with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio. Which sections a membership covers depends on the tier, so confirm it.
  • Tiers: Floor for the training floor, Engine with coached programming, and Atelier, built around 1:1 coaching. Prices and inclusions are confirmed on enquiry.
  • Families: youth fitness is coach-supervised, arranged and approved by a parent or guardian. Ask which ages each session accepts.
  • Seeing it first: a free guided tour is a walk-through with a member of the team, not a workout.
DaysOpening hours
Saturday to Thursday06:00–23:00
Friday09:00–22:00

Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.

Where it may not fit: if you live and work on the mainland, or your loop runs between Yas and Saadiyat, a gym on your side of the bridges will usually win step two. Book the tour at your training hour to run steps five and six in one visit.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

What if I move flat after my first year?

Many newcomers do. Avoid a long term that outlasts your lease, or ask whether the contract can be transferred or ended if you move across the city. A gym on your work route survives a home move better than one by the flat.

My partner does not drive yet. What should we check?

Check the trip by taxi or bus as well as by car, and the cost of it each week. Getting to a gym without a car covers the options.

Can I try a few gyms before choosing?

Yes. Book tours at your training hour, and ask each gym whether a day pass or short access is available. Pass availability changes, so confirm it with each gym before you go.

Should I join the gym most of my colleagues use?

Only if it passes the seven steps for you. Company is a good tie-breaker, but a gym on a colleague's route can be the wrong one for yours.
