The question lifters with a few years behind them ask
After a year or more of training, you know a cardio room with light dumbbells will not do. The harder question is whether a women-only space can carry your whole programme, heaviest session included, or whether part of it has to move to the mixed floor. That answer decides which membership you pay for.
RPM's Ladies section is a women-only space inside a mixed club. If you are earlier in your lifting and want a kit checklist, choosing a ladies gym for weight training covers it. This page is for women who already follow a programme.
Three tests before you rule anything out
- Your heaviest lift of the week. Can you do it in the women-only space at today's load, with safeties set and room to miss a rep?
- Your top dumbbell sets. Does the section's rack hold the pair you press and row with, plus headroom for the next few months?
- Your hour. Is that rack or bench open when you train, or does a class or a queue take it?
Three yeses mean the women-only space can be your home floor. One no usually calls for a workaround, such as a quieter hour or a variation of the lift. Two or more noes mean you should price a tier that adds a mixed floor, or keep looking.
Equipment by goal, and where to find it
An experienced programme splits into heavy compound lifts, accessories and conditioning. The kit each one needs decides where it can happen.
| Goal | What it relies on | Women-only space is usually enough if | You may need the mixed floor if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy squats and overhead presses | A rack with safeties, a standard bar, enough plates | The section has a rack and plates for your working sets | The only rack is busy at your hour or you outload the plates |
| Bench press | A bench inside a rack, or a spotter | The bench sits in a rack or someone can spot you | You press heavy alone with no safeties |
| Deadlifts from the floor | Floor room, bumper plates, permission to pull | Floor pulls are allowed and there is space | The section wants quiet lifting or has no bumpers |
| Hip thrusts and glute work | A stable bench and a bar pad, or a glute machine | There is a bench you can brace against a wall | Your plan depends on a machine the section lacks |
| Rows, pulldowns and cable work | Cable stations with handles and an ankle strap | A cable station is open at your hour | You run several cable exercises back to back at peak time |
| Leg accessories | A leg press or hamstring curl, room to lunge | The section has a leg machine and a clear walkway | You rely on a leg press it does not hold |
| Heavy dumbbell work | Pairs that reach your top sets | Its heaviest pair covers your working sets | You already use the heaviest pair it holds |
| Conditioning finishers | A sled, ropes or bikes, and open floor | Bikes or other cardio machines are enough | You want sled pushes or rope work on a turf lane |
Ask to see each item inside the women-only space, at the hour you train.
Splitting one week across two floors
Many experienced women train mostly in the women-only space and take one or two sessions a week to the mixed floor. On a four-day upper and lower split it can look like this, with the heavy squat day on the weekend, away from office hours.
| Day | Session | Where | Why there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday | Heavy squats, then leg accessories | Women-only space | Long rests on one rack at your quiet hour |
| Sunday | Bench press, rows and cable work | Women-only space | A bench and a cable station cover it |
| Tuesday | Deadlifts and hip thrusts | Mixed floor | Bumper plates and room to pull |
| Thursday | Overhead press and pulldowns, then sled pushes | Mixed floor | One trip covers the rack and the turf lane |
Group every session that needs missing kit onto as few trips as possible, and keep the rest where you feel at ease. If you would rather skip the mixed floor entirely, change the lift instead: Romanian deadlifts or heavy dumbbell variations can stand in for floor pulls for a block, and a bike can replace the sled.
Spotters, chalk and filming your sets
- Spotting. Ask whether coaches on the floor will spot a heavy bench or squat. If not, set the safeties and leave a rep in the tank.
- Chalk. Some gyms ban loose chalk or allow liquid chalk only, so ask before you bring yours.
- Lowering the bar. A calm section may not want deadlifts dropped from the top. Ask how lifts should be lowered.
- Filming. Recording your own sets is common, but other women may not want to appear in your frame. Ask the house rule, and read filming in UAE gyms before you prop up your phone.
Answers to the questions lifters search for
Which gym in Abu Dhabi is best for women who lift weights?
It depends on your programme and your hour. The right gym lets you do your heaviest lift of the week in a space you are comfortable in, at the time you train, without queuing for the one rack. Take your programme to two or three clubs and run the three tests above. RPM is one to test, with a women-only Ladies section and a Mixed section in one club.
Which gym suits a woman focused on strength rather than cardio?
Judge it by its strength kit before its treadmills. Many women-only spaces are laid out around cardio machines and light dumbbells, the wrong way round for you. Count racks and benches, find the heaviest dumbbells and ask whether floor pulls are allowed.
Where can women train with free weights in Abu Dhabi?
On the main floor of a mixed gym, in a women-only section inside a mixed club, or in a women-only gym or studio, although studios often carry little heavy kit. At RPM, the Ladies section has its own strength equipment, and women can also lift in the Mixed section if their tier covers it.
How RPM's two floors hold up to the tests
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. The Ladies section is for women only, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio. The Mixed section is used by men and women. Photos of the club's training floor show plate-loaded machines including a leg press, cable towers, benches, dumbbells and a squat rack with colour bumper plates. The functional area, with its turf lane and sled, belongs to the Mixed section.
RPM does not publish which items sit in the Ladies section, so run the three tests there on a free guided tour at your usual hour, and ask whether the section has functional kit of its own. Confirm which tier covers both sections before you choose. The roster lists Coach Maria as strength and conditioning coach in the Ladies section, and the membership page sets out the three tiers.
Questions, answered.
What if my lifts outgrow the section's heaviest kit?
Plan for it before it happens. If you already use the heaviest pair the section holds, price a tier with mixed access, or look at another club.
Do I need a tier that covers both sections?
Only if the three tests send part of your week to the mixed floor. Price both options and get section access in writing.
What if the women-only space has no bumper plates?
Lower deadlifts under control, run Romanian deadlifts for a block, or move that one session to the mixed floor if your tier allows.
