Why the first weeks are the wrong time to sign
A gym you join in week one is chosen for a life you have not started yet. Several things are still moving, and each one changes which gym will suit you.
| Still moving | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|
| Your home address | Temporary housing is often in a different district from the flat you finally rent |
| Your office and hours | The first weeks of a job rarely show your real finishing time |
| How you get around | Until you have a car, a gym that needs one is harder to reach |
| Your children's school | School-run hours decide when parents can train |
| The season | Arriving in summer pushes training indoors and changes when roads are busy |
Short access fills those weeks. For RPM, the weekly pass page explains what to confirm for a week, and the team tells you whether a pass is available on your dates.
Short access while housing is unsettled
| Phase | Access to look at | What you are learning |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary housing | Day passes, or a weekly pass at a gym that is easy to reach | How you like to train here, and which hours suit the climate |
| Flat hunting | Weekly passes, or app credits if you are viewing flats across the city | Which districts make the trip to a gym easy at your hour |
| Lease signed | Tours at two or three gyms on the route between home and work | Which gym you would actually keep using |
| First month in the new home | A membership at the gym that came out on top | Whether the routine holds once work settles |
Before you buy anything, ask your new employer's HR team whether there is a corporate gym arrangement or a wellness benefit. If the company reimburses gym costs, claiming gym costs from an employer lists the paperwork to keep from day one.
Documents to have ready
Gyms set their own requirements, and they differ. Ask each gym what it needs for short access and for a membership, and keep these to hand in case.
| Item | Why a gym might ask | If you do not have it yet |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Photo ID for the desk and the agreement | Carry the original, and keep a copy on your phone |
| Emirates ID | Some gyms may ask for it once you are a resident | Ask whether your passport is accepted while your residency is still being processed |
| A UAE mobile number | Bookings, WhatsApp messages and receipts | Ask whether an overseas number works for now |
| A payment card | Some desks take cards only | Ask which payment methods are accepted |
| An emergency contact | Most sign-up forms ask for one | A colleague or relative here, or someone abroad |
| Staff ID or an employer letter | Only if your company has a corporate arrangement | Ask HR what the gym expects to see |
Requirements change from gym to gym, so a short message beforehand saves a wasted trip.
Learn the city's training rhythm while you wait
Your short-access weeks are a chance to learn when Abu Dhabi's gyms and roads are busy, before you lock yourself into a slot.
- Train once at the hour you expect to use after work starts, and see how crowded the floor is.
- Drive the route at that hour too. Bridges onto and off the island often slow down at peak times.
- Notice the shape of the week: the Saturday–Sunday weekend, shorter Friday hours at many gyms, and a quieter city when schools are on holiday.
- If you arrived in summer, expect gyms to get busier once the heat eases and residents return from travel.
Choosing once home and work are fixed
When the lease is signed and you have worked a few full weeks, you have what you need to choose. Run each candidate through these checks.
- The trip at your training hour, from home or from work, whichever you will leave from. The location convenience worksheet shows how to compare it.
- Parking, or a drop-off point that is easy at that hour.
- Opening hours that cover your working week, Friday included.
- The section you need: a women-only space, or a mixed floor where you can train with your partner.
- Coaching or classes, if you train better with someone in charge.
- For families: what the gym offers children and teenagers, and on what terms.
Then book tours at your two strongest options, at the hour you will train, and ask for the terms in writing before you sign.
If RPM is on your list
RPM Gym is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking and a lift to Level 4. Whether it suits you depends on where you settle, so put it through the same checks as any other gym.
| Question | At RPM |
|---|---|
| Short access while you settle | Ask whether a day pass or weekly pass is available, the price, what it includes and which section it covers |
| Sections | A Mixed section, where men train, and a women-only Ladies section with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio |
| Seeing it first | A free guided tour: a walk-through with a member of the team, not a workout |
| Membership | Three tiers, Floor, Engine and Atelier, with inclusions and prices confirmed on enquiry |
| Children and teenagers | Youth fitness is coach-supervised, arranged and approved by a parent or guardian. Ask which ages each session accepts |
Questions, answered.
Do I need an Emirates ID to join a gym in Abu Dhabi?
Gyms set their own requirements. Ask each one which ID it accepts for short access and for a membership, especially while your residency paperwork is still being processed.
Should I just use the gym in my building?
Use it for easy days if it has what you need. Building gyms vary a lot, and many lack heavy free weights, coaching or a women-only space, so you may still want a full gym for your main sessions.
How soon should I commit to a membership?
Once your lease is signed and you have worked a few full weeks, so you know your real hours and your daily route.
My partner and I want to train at the same gym. What should we check?
Check that the sections suit you both and that each membership covers them. At RPM, men train in the Mixed section, and women can use the Ladies section, the Mixed section or both, depending on the tier.
Can I keep my gym membership from home?
Some international chains let members train at their clubs in other countries, on their own terms. Ask your home gym before you cancel, and compare the cost with a local membership.
