Why the gap happens, and what it calls for
| Situation | Typical length | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Your contract ended and you are unsure about renewing | A few weeks | Renewing out of habit before you have compared |
| You are moving house within Abu Dhabi | Until the new lease starts | Joining a gym on your old route |
| A new job starts, with hours you do not know yet | The first month of the job | Choosing a slot before you know your real working day |
| You are away for part of the summer | The weeks you travel, plus a week either side | Paying for months you will spend elsewhere |
| You want to see a new gym before committing | However long the trial takes | A long contract signed on the first visit |
Each of these calls for access you can stop without a penalty. For RPM, the weekly pass page lists what to confirm for a week. A pass is not always on sale, so check your dates with the team first.
Keep new lock-ins out of the gap
The easiest mistake during a gap is signing up to something long just to have somewhere to train. Watch for these.
- A long term sold as a stopgap. If the only reason to sign is the lower monthly figure, work out what leaving early would cost.
- Automatic renewal on a short term. A one-month term that rolls into another month is a lock-in by the back door.
- A joining fee on a membership you may not keep. It only pays off if you stay.
- A freeze on your old membership that pushes its end date past the point you wanted to leave.
If you have not yet left your current gym, sort out the exit first. How to switch gyms covers notice periods and exit dates.
Use the gap to trial your next gym
A gap is the cheapest time to compare gyms properly, because you are paying by the visit anyway. Rotate through your shortlist on short access and train your real programme at each one.
| Week | Where | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gym A, on a day pass or two | Your heaviest session, at the hour you will train long term |
| 2 | Gym B, the same way | The same session, so the comparison is fair |
| 3 | The stronger of the two, on a weekly pass | A full week of your programme, including the drive on a working day |
| 4 | Decision week | Ask the winner for its terms in writing, then decide |
Two candidates is usually enough. Add a third only if the first two disappoint.
Before each first visit, use the gym tour planner to time the trip and book the right slot.
Keep training consistent while access changes
Changing gyms every week can break a routine. A few habits keep it intact.
- Carry your programme with you, in an app or a notebook, so every gym gets the same plan.
- Set a floor of two full sessions a week, whatever happens with access. Anything more is a bonus.
- Keep your training days fixed even when the venue changes. If you trained on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, carry on with those days.
- Have a fallback session that needs no gym, for the week a move or a trip eats your plans. Outdoors works in the cooler months, early or late in the day.
- Test your working weights again on unfamiliar machines rather than copying the numbers across.
A gap plan you can copy
Write the gap down. A gap with an end date stays a gap, while one without an end date tends to become a habit.
- Gap starts: [date]. Reason: [contract ended / moving / new job / travel].
- Decision date: [date]. By then I will have chosen and signed, or extended this plan on purpose.
- Gyms to trial: [Gym A], [Gym B].
- Sessions each week during the gap: [two or three].
- Access: [day passes / weekly pass / app credits], with a budget of up to [your figure].
- What would make me sign: [hours that fit my week / equipment for my programme / women-only space / coaching].
Bridging the gap at RPM
RPM Gym is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking. It has a Mixed section, where men train, and a women-only Ladies section.
- During the gap: ask the team whether a day pass or weekly pass is available on your dates, what it costs, what it includes and which section it covers.
- To look before you train: the free guided tour is a walk-through with a member of the team, not a workout.
- When the gap ends: memberships come in three tiers, Floor, Engine and Atelier. Ask for the inclusions, the price and the minimum term in writing.
Questions, answered.
Should I freeze my old membership instead of cancelling it?
Only if you expect to go back. A freeze usually moves your end date later by the length of the freeze, so check the new date and any fee before you agree to it.
Is a three-month membership a sensible bridge?
Only if the gap will certainly last that long and the gym is one you might stay with. Otherwise you pay for weeks you do not use, or for a gym you would not have chosen.
Can a multi-gym app cover the gap?
It can, especially if you want to try several gyms. Check what an app visit includes at each venue, since some leave out classes, recovery rooms or women-only areas.
What if the gap runs longer than planned?
Move the decision date on purpose and reprice. If short access has cost more than a month's membership for two months running, it is time to commit somewhere.
How do I stay motivated without a home gym?
Put the sessions in your calendar like meetings, and train with a friend where you can. A fixed slot does more for you than a perfect plan.
