Three levels of Pilates teacher training
Pilates teacher training is usually sold in levels, and the level decides what an instructor was trained to teach. The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), an international professional association for Pilates teachers and studios, accredits teacher training programmes at three levels through its ITTAP scheme.
| Level | Programme named in the PMA standards | What it prepares a teacher for |
|---|---|---|
| Mat | 100-hour teacher training | Teaching mat Pilates |
| Reformer | 300-hour teacher training | Teaching on the reformer |
| Comprehensive | 450-hour teacher training | Teaching across the full range of Pilates apparatus |
Hours are those named in the PMA's accreditation standards. Schools outside that scheme structure their courses differently, so ask what the instructor's own course covered.
The PMA says its accreditation evaluates the training programme, not the individual teachers who complete it. An accredited course tells you about the course. You still need to know that the person in front of you finished it.
Where a certification can be checked
There is no single world register for Pilates teachers. These are the public lists worth knowing, and what each one can confirm.
| Body | What it is | What you can check |
|---|---|---|
| REPs UAE | The UAE's independent register of exercise professionals | Whether an instructor is registered as a Pilates Instructor (mat) or a Comprehensive Pilates Teacher, with an expiry date |
| National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP) | A credentialing body for Pilates teachers | Its directory of certified teachers, searchable by name and country, with NCPT for comprehensive and PMC for mat |
| Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) | An international professional association that accredits teacher training programmes | Its published lists of accredited programmes at each level |
| The instructor's training school | The provider that issued the certificate | Ask it to confirm the course level and the completion date |
A name can be missing from a directory for ordinary reasons, such as a lapsed membership or a course taken with a school outside these schemes. A gap is a reason to ask, not proof of a problem.
At RPM, Pilates takes place in a studio inside the women-only Ladies section, so sessions are for women. Pilates at RPM explains what to ask before you book.
What REPs UAE's two Pilates categories mean
REPs UAE describes Category F, Pilates Instructor, as someone who can design and teach mat Pilates sessions for apparently healthy adults, in groups or one to one. Category G, Comprehensive Pilates Teacher, adds competence across a range of Pilates equipment, including the reformer and the barrel. REPs UAE says Category G is normally for instructors who hold the certification of the Pilates Method Alliance or equivalent comprehensive training covering mat and equipment work.
Two practical points follow. A Category F instructor can be an excellent mat teacher and still not be trained to run your reformer session. And because REPs UAE registration has an expiry date, check the date as well as the category. The register's other categories are set out in how to check a personal trainer is registered.
The phrase "apparently healthy adults" matters. If you are pregnant, postnatal, injured or managing a medical condition, get clearance from your doctor, midwife or physiotherapist first, and tell the instructor before you start, whatever their certification.
Questions to ask the instructor
- Which school trained you, and did the course cover mat work only, the reformer or the full apparatus?
- Which body certified you, and how can I check it?
- Does your training cover the equipment this session uses?
- How do you adapt exercises for a complete beginner?
- How many people are in a group reformer class, and how do you correct them?
- Do you keep your certification current with further training?
A good instructor answers these without fuss. If someone is vague about where they trained, ask to see the certificate, then check it with whoever issued it.
Reading a certificate on the studio wall
A framed certificate is a start, not a check. Look for details you can verify.
| On the certificate | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The instructor's full name | It should match the person teaching you |
| The school or certifying body | It tells you whom to contact to confirm it |
| The level of training | Mat-only training does not cover reformer teaching |
| The date, and any renewal date | Some credentials lapse without further training |
| A certificate or registration number | It lets the issuer find the record quickly |
If the instructor trained abroad, the certifying body may sit in another country. Most have a contact page or a directory. Ask the instructor for the exact link instead of searching for a similar-sounding name.
The studio matters as much as the certificate
A qualified instructor in a badly run class still gives you a poor session. What makes a gym good for Pilates covers the studio side in detail. Two points from it matter most when you are judging an instructor.
- Class size decides how many corrections you get. Ask the maximum for a group reformer class, and watch one if you can.
- The apparatus decides what a session can include. Ask which equipment your session uses before you book.
Asking about Pilates at RPM
RPM's Pilates studio is inside the women-only Ladies section. The studio photos show reformers, some with towers, trapeze-table frames and a ladder barrel, so ask which apparatus your session uses.
The coach roster lists Giana Suleiman Daqnoush as the Pilates and aerobic coach in the Ladies section. RPM does not publish her certification on this page. Ask her which course she completed and which body certified it, as this guide suggests for any studio.
Ask the team which group and private formats are running and which memberships include Pilates sessions. Prices are confirmed on enquiry, and a free guided tour of the Ladies section lets you see the studio first.

Questions, answered.
Is a mat Pilates certificate enough to teach reformer classes?
Not on its own. Mat and reformer are separate levels of training. The PMA accredits them as separate programmes, and REPs UAE registers mat-only and comprehensive instructors in different categories.
What is a comprehensive Pilates teacher?
Someone trained in mat work and across the main Pilates apparatus. In the PMA's accreditation standards, a comprehensive programme is a 450-hour course. REPs UAE registers these instructors as Category G.
Does a Pilates certificate from abroad count in the UAE?
It can. REPs UAE accepts qualifications from ICREPs member countries that meet UAE standards, and assesses others individually. Ask whether the instructor is registered with REPs UAE, and check the original certificate with the body that issued it.
Can I check an instructor without asking them?
Partly. You can search the REPs UAE and NPCP directories by name, but a missing listing proves little. Asking directly is quicker and tells you more.
Should a Pilates instructor ask about my health first?
Yes. A good instructor asks about injuries, pregnancy and medical conditions before your first session and adapts the work. If any of these apply to you, get clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist first.
