Shortlist two or three gyms first
One gym gives you nothing to compare. Five blur together by the third visit. Two or three is the useful range, and you can build the shortlist in an evening from each gym's website and its recent reviews.
- Must-haves first: the one or two things you will not compromise on, such as a women-only section or coached programming. Any gym without them drops off.
- Opening hours against your week, including Fridays and the weekend.
- A route you already drive. A gym between home and the office tends to get more visits than one that needs its own trip.
- Honest effort. A gym across a bridge at rush hour stays on the list only if it offers something the others cannot.
What is the best way to visit a gym before joining?
Book a guided tour for the hour you would normally train, drive there from your usual starting point, and see two or three gyms in the same week while they are fresh in your mind. Take notes before you leave each car park. A tour is usually a walk-through, so if you want to train on the equipment, ask separately whether a trial session or short-term access is available and what it includes.
If RPM Gym is on your list, book its free guided tour the same way, at your training hour, as one of the week's visits. It is a walk-through with a member of the team, not a workout.
Book the slot you will actually train in
A gym at mid-morning on a Tuesday is a different place after work. Book every tour for the slot you plan to use, so the crowd you see is the crowd you will train with.
| If you plan to train | Book the tour for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Before office hours | An early slot, Monday to Thursday | You see the regulars and whether the car park fills before work |
| In a lunch break | Midday on a working day | You learn whether a session fits your break |
| After work | Early evening, Monday to Thursday | The busiest window at many gyms, so the honest test |
| On Fridays | Friday, after Friday prayers | Many gyms keep shorter Friday hours, and traffic around mosques changes the drive |
| At the weekend | Saturday or Sunday at your usual time | Weekend crowds follow family plans and sports fixtures |
| During Ramadan | The slot after iftar you would use | Timetables shift for the month, and the crowd shifts with them |
If a gym only tours at quiet times, take the tour and come back for ten minutes at your hour another day. A quiet floor at the wrong hour proves nothing.
Put the visits in a sensible order
- Tour the gym you are least sure about first. The first tour is practice, so do not spend it on your favourite.
- Put your front-runner second or third, once you know what good looks like.
- Keep the same weekday slot for every visit, so the crowds are comparable.
- Do one tour a day on working days. At the weekend, two can work if both gyms sit on the same side of the bridges.
- Leave at least a day between the last tour and any decision, and never sign on a first visit, however warm the welcome.
Time the drive as part of the visit
The tour starts when you leave home or the office, not at reception. Set off from your usual starting point at your usual hour, and note the drive, the parking and the walk from the car to the training floor.
- From May to September, count the walk from the car in the heat. A shaded or underground car park changes how often you go in July.
- Note which bridge or main road was slow, and where.
- If the tour slot is not your training hour, drive the route once at the real hour on another day.
For live traffic and test runs, see how to plan the easiest route to a gym.
What to bring on tour day
- Your must-haves, written down, so a friendly guide does not talk you past them.
- The inspection scorecard and the question bank for staff, printed or saved as screenshots.
- A charged phone for notes and, with permission, photos of the training areas. Never take photos in a changing area.
- Training kit only if a trial session was agreed in advance.
- Any ID the building or the gym asks for. Ask when you book.
- If you want to see a women-only section, say so when you book, so the right member of staff shows you round.
Take notes you can still read on day five
By the third tour, details start to swap between gyms. Use one template for every visit and fill it in before you drive off, or record a short voice note on the way out.
| Line | What to write |
|---|---|
| Gym and slot | Name, date and the hour you visited |
| Getting there | The slow stretch and where you parked |
| Crowd at my hour | Where the queues were |
| Gut feel | A score from 1 to 5, kept apart from the facts |
| Promises made | Anything offered that you will need in writing |
| Open questions | What you still need answered |
A one-week plan for touring
Three tours in one working week, with the weekend left for the decision. Move the days around your shifts.
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Saturday | Build the shortlist and message each gym to book a tour at your training hour. |
| Sunday | Confirm slots for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Ask where to park. |
| Monday | Tour one: the gym you are least sure about. |
| Tuesday | Tour two. Same slot, same template. |
| Wednesday | Tour three: your front-runner. |
| Thursday | Send each gym your open questions by WhatsApp, so the answers arrive in writing. |
| Friday | Lay the notes side by side. If two gyms are close, plan a short return visit at your hour. |
| Next Saturday or Sunday | Decide, or make that return visit. Nothing should need signing on the day of a tour. |
Booking a tour at RPM
RPM Gym is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. There is free on-site parking and a lift up to Level 4. When you book, say whether you want to see the Mixed section, the women-only Ladies section or both, and check that your training hour falls inside the opening hours below.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
Questions, answered.
How long should I allow for each tour?
Enough to see every area you would use and ask your questions without rushing, plus time to park and write notes. Ask the gym how long its tours usually take.
Can I bring my husband, wife or a friend?
Usually, but ask when you book. A women-only section is closed to men, so at RPM a male companion can see the Mixed section but not the Ladies section.
Should I wait until after Ramadan or the summer to tour?
Tour in the conditions you will train in. If you will start during Ramadan, ask for each gym's Ramadan timetable and visit at that hour. A summer visit shows you the building, but the crowd may be lighter than in term time.
What if I can only tour at the weekend?
Take the weekend tour, then drive the route once on a working day at your real training hour. Weekday crowds can be very different.
