What the extra money actually buys
A floor-only membership buys access: the equipment, the changing area and whatever facilities your tier covers. A membership with coaching adds someone else's judgement, and that can mean very different amounts of a coach's time. Before comparing prices, find out which of these levels you are being offered.
| Level of coaching | What you get | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| None, floor only | Access during opening hours, often with an induction | Anyone planning your sessions or checking your form |
| Coached programming | A written plan that a coach sets and reviews at agreed intervals | Someone watching every set |
| Regular 1:1 sessions | A coach beside you for booked sessions, adjusting the plan as you go | Your solo days, unless the coach plans those too |
Each step up costs more, so ask which level your problem needs. RPM's membership tiers follow a similar ladder, described at the end of this page. If you have not yet decided whether to pay a coach at all, coaching against training independently covers that choice.
Bundled coaching against floor access, side by side
| What decides it | Membership with coaching | Floor access only |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost shape | One higher tier price, call it T | A lower price M, plus any sessions you buy later |
| Who writes the plan | A coach, from your goal and your history | You, or a plan you found |
| Technique feedback | Built in, at the level the tier provides | Only when you pay for it separately |
| Accountability | Booked sessions or reviews that someone notices you miss | Your own discipline |
| Summer travel | Ask what happens to coaching you cannot use while away | Nothing to waste beyond the membership itself |
| Main risk | Paying for coaching you never book | Months on a plan that has stopped working |
| When to switch | Step down once you can run the plan alone | Step up when progress stalls or a goal gets a date |
T and M are placeholders. Ask each gym for its figures and for what the coaching includes.
Who gets their money's worth from each
Coaching inside the membership tends to pay for itself if:
- you are new to free weights, or returning after years away
- you have a dated goal, such as a fitness test for work, a mountain hike in the cooler months or a family wedding
- your progress has stalled for a couple of months and you cannot see why
- you have drifted away from gyms before, and a booked slot is what keeps you coming
Floor access alone tends to be the better buy if:
- you have trained consistently for a year or more and keep a log
- you can write, or follow, a plan that adds load over time
- your hours change too often to book a coach
- you would rather buy a few check-in sessions when you need them
Is personal training worth adding to a gym membership in Abu Dhabi?
It is worth adding when it fixes something you cannot fix alone: a lift you are unsure of, a plateau you cannot explain, a goal with a date, or weeks where you stop turning up. Before you pay, write down what you expect a coach to change in eight weeks. If you can name it, coaching is likely to earn its cost. If you cannot, the floor alone may serve you better for now, and you can add coaching when a reason appears.
What catches people out with bundled coaching
- Coaching you do not book still costs money. If the tier includes sessions, ask whether unused ones carry over or lapse at the end of each month.
- Coaches have diaries too. A tier built around 1:1 sessions only works if a coach has open slots in your evenings, and the hours after office time fill first.
- Floor-only members often end up buying single sessions later, sometimes at a higher rate per session than a coached tier works out at. Price that route honestly.
- Moving between tiers mid-term is not always allowed. Some gyms let you step up at any time but only step down at renewal.
- Summer pauses both sides. If you or your coach travel in July or August, ask whether the coaching element freezes with the membership.
Questions to settle before you pick a tier
- What exactly does the coaching in this tier consist of: how many sessions or reviews a month, how long, and with whom?
- Can I choose my coach, and change if we do not get on?
- What would the same coaching cost on the floor-only tier, bought separately?
- Can I move up or down a tier during the term, and how is the price adjusted?
- What happens to included coaching while my membership is frozen?
For a line-by-line check of everything else a tier should list, use the premium inclusions checklist.
Worked example: a teacher who wants to learn the barbell
Take a secondary school teacher in her second year in Abu Dhabi. She has used machines and the treadmill for months, wants to learn to squat and deadlift with a barbell, and has three evenings a week to spare during term. She compares two routes over the autumn term, roughly three months. Call the floor-only price M a month, a coached tier T a month, and one 1:1 session bought separately S.
| Floor plus sessions bought separately | Tier with coaching | |
|---|---|---|
| Three months of access | 3M | 3T |
| Coaching | Six sessions, so 6S | Included at the tier's level |
| Total for the term | 3M + 6S | 3T |
| Cheaper when | T minus M is more than 2S a month | T minus M is less than 2S a month |
| Flexibility | Book sessions only in weeks that suit | Coaching is there each month, used or not |
Her quotes put the coached tier ahead, and she knows she skips sessions she has not booked. She takes the tier for the term and asks, in writing, whether she can step down to the floor-only tier in January, when she plans to run the coach's programme herself with a check-in every month or so.
How RPM's three tiers line up
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking and a lift up to the floor. Its tiers map onto the ladder at the top of this page. Floor is the training-floor tier. Engine adds coached programming. Atelier is built around 1:1 coaching. What each tier includes, which sections it covers and the prices are confirmed on enquiry rather than published.
The club has a Mixed section, where men train, and a separate women-only Ladies section with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio. Coaches on the roster cover strength, conditioning, Pilates, combat fitness and physique training across both sections, and female coaches work in the Ladies section. Before choosing between Engine and Atelier, ask which coaches have open slots at your hours. Personal training at RPM explains how sessions run.
Questions, answered.
Can I start on a floor-only tier and add coaching later?
At most gyms, yes, either by buying sessions or by moving up a tier. Ask how the price changes mid-term, and whether what you have already paid counts towards the higher tier.
Is coached programming enough without 1:1 sessions?
For someone who already lifts with decent form and mainly needs structure, it often is. For learning a new lift from scratch, a few sessions with a coach watching usually come first.
Is coaching worth paying for if I only train twice a week?
It can be, because a plan makes each of those two sessions count, and that matters more when you have fewer of them. Divide the extra cost by your sessions to see what each planned session costs you.
Does RPM publish what each tier includes?
No. RPM confirms inclusions and prices on enquiry. Ask for both in writing, along with how much coaching Engine and Atelier include.
