What you take on when nobody is coaching you
Training independently still means training to a plan. You choose it, perhaps a written programme or a template a coach gave you last year, and then do every other job yourself. Personal training at RPM describes the coached side, and the table below shows which jobs move across when you pay.
What is the difference between open gym training and coached gym training?
Open gym training means using the floor on your own terms, at any hour the gym is open. Coached gym training means a coach sets and supervises the work, either 1:1 or through coached programming that comes with a membership. You trade flexibility and a lower cost for feedback and accountability.
Who does each job
| Job | With a coach | On your own |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the plan | Written for your goal and history | Picked from a programme, book or template |
| Adding load week to week | Decided for you, and held back on bad days | Your call, from your log |
| Checking technique | Seen from outside, set by set | Mirrors, phone video and how a lift feels |
| Turning up | A booked slot and someone waiting | Your own discipline |
| Adjusting for travel, illness or Ramadan | The coach rewrites the week | You rewrite it, or pause |
| Cost | Coaching on top of membership | Membership only |
| Hours | When the coach has an opening | Whenever the gym is open |
Who does well on a coach, and who on a plan
Coaching usually pays for itself when you:
- want to learn a lift properly that you have only ever copied from others
- have a fixed date to work towards, such as a race, a fitness test or a sports season
- lose interest within weeks unless someone is expecting you
- are coming back after a long break, with your doctor's agreement if the break was medical
Independent training usually works when you:
- have trained consistently for a year or more and keep a log
- can explain why each exercise is in your plan
- work shifts, travel often or have family commitments that make fixed appointments hard
- would rather put the money towards a longer membership
If you are starting from nothing, the beginner version of this choice sets out a first month for each route. Women weighing a female coach in a women-only space can read coached or alone in a ladies gym.
Signals that it is time to switch
The useful question is which route suits the next few months. These signals point one way or the other.
| What you notice | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| The same weights for six weeks or more, with normal sleep and eating | Book a short coached block to find out why |
| A lift that feels wrong, or one you keep avoiding | A coach to check technique, or a doctor or physiotherapist if it is pain |
| A new goal with a date, such as a first race | A coach to plan backwards from the date |
| You can say what next month's sessions will look like, and why | You are ready to train on your own |
| You only train on the days the coach is booked | Ask the coach to hand over the plan, then try a month alone |
| Summer travel or Ramadan is about to break your routine | Ask a coach for a short plan you can run without them |
A hybrid month
Between full coaching and none sits a month like this, which many coaches will run if you ask. You pay for two or three sessions instead of eight or twelve, and someone still checks your technique.
| Week | Coached | On your own | Your job |
|---|---|---|---|
| One | A session to review your log, check your lifts and write the month's plan | Two sessions on the new plan | Note the loads you use |
| Two | None | Three sessions | Film one set of your hardest lift |
| Three | An optional short look at the filmed lift | Two or three sessions | Write down anything that felt wrong |
| Four | A review: what moved, what did not, what changes next | One or two sessions | Bring your log |
Then repeat it, or drop to one review every six to eight weeks once your log keeps moving. Ask the coach how a review is charged if it is shorter than a full session.
Costs and catches on both sides
- Independent training costs time. Planning, reading and filming take hours that a coach would otherwise cover.
- Many people training alone run the same programme for years because it is familiar, long after it stopped working.
- Coaching can breed dependence. A good coach teaches you to need them less, so ask how they will hand over.
- A coach's diary, cancellation terms and summer leave all become your constraints. Get the package terms in writing.
- Comparing cost is easy and comparing value is not. Ask yourself what a month without progress costs you in fees and time.
Before you book a coached block, ask what the first session will assess, what you will be able to do alone by the end, and how the plan will be handed over. If your plan currently comes from an app, a coach or an app weighs that choice.
Worked example: a steady lifter whose numbers stopped in spring
Take a reader who has trained alone four times a week for three years, with a written programme and a log. His bench press and squat have not moved since spring, he travels for most of July, and he wants to enter an indoor fitness race in the cooler months. Call his membership M and a coached session S.
| Option | What he gets | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Stay independent | Full flexibility, and a guess at why he has stalled | M |
| Full coaching, three sessions a week | Close supervision and a race plan | M plus about 12S |
| A six-week coached block, then the hybrid month | A reason for the stall, a new plan, a version for July and monthly reviews | M plus about 6S during the block, then about 2S a month |
He chooses the block. The coach finds his rest days shrinking and his squat depth drifting, rewrites the plan, and gives him a version to run abroad in July. From September he trains alone again, with a monthly review before the race.
How this choice looks at RPM
RPM's membership tiers map onto this page. Floor covers the training floor, which suits independent training, Engine adds coached programming, and Atelier is built around 1:1 coaching. What each tier includes, which sections it covers and prices are confirmed on enquiry.
The club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, has a Mixed section and a women-only Ladies section, where female coaches work. Coaches on the roster cover strength, conditioning, Pilates, combat fitness and physique training. On a free guided tour, ask to meet a coach and whether a hybrid arrangement is possible.
Questions, answered.
How long should a coached block last?
Long enough to learn what you came for and leave with a written plan. For many people that is four to eight weeks, but ask the coach about your goal.
Is a coach worth paying for once I am experienced?
Often, in short doses: to break a plateau, prepare for an event or get an outside view of technique, then back to training alone.
Will I lose progress when I stop coaching?
Not if you keep the same plan, log and habits. Progress usually stalls when people drop the structure along with the coach, so ask for the plan in writing before your last session.
What should I record in my training log?
The date, each exercise with its load, sets and reps, and a short note on how it felt. That is enough for you, or a coach, to see what is working.
