Landing at or leaving from Zayed International Airport: is there time to train?

Usually only on a day when you are already staying in the city. Zayed International Airport is on the mainland, and the route box rates the drive to RPM in Al Manhal a mainland commute, so squeezing a session between landing and a connection rarely works. It fits best on a full day in Abu Dhabi before a late departure, the day after you arrive, or a crew rest day, with any pass confirmed with the team in advance.

An airport on the mainland, a club on the island

Zayed International Airport is the international airport that serves Abu Dhabi. It was previously called Abu Dhabi International Airport, and the Abu Dhabi Media Office announced the change of name, so some travellers still search for it by the old one.

RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal on the main island, with no presence at the airport. The trip between the two is what the route box calls a mainland commute, which is why a session around a flight needs planning rather than hope. For the general checks, see whether a flight day leaves room for RPM's one club.

Four kinds of flight day, and a verdict on each

Your situationVerdictWhat makes it work
Arriving after a long flightRest first, train the next dayA light session on your first full day, once you have slept
Leaving later in the day, after a full day in the cityOften workableTrain in the morning, get ready at the club, then leave for the airport with a wide margin
A connection that leaves the airportRarely worth itOnly with a long gap, permission to leave the airport, and every margin your airline advises kept intact
Crew on a rest day in Abu DhabiA good fitA planned session on a day with no duty, at a quiet hour

If you are unsure whether your ticket and entry status let you leave the airport between flights, ask your airline, and do not plan a session around a connection until you have a clear answer. Travellers staying several days for work will find more in the guide for business travellers.

Bags, lockers and what to carry

Luggage is the practical snag on a flight day. The changing area has keypad lockers for everyday items, but RPM does not publish whether a suitcase or a large travel bag will fit in one. Ask the team before you turn up with a case.

  • Leave big cases at your hotel, or with whoever is hosting you, before you come.
  • Carry training kit in a small bag: shoes, clothes, a water bottle and a bag for damp kit.
  • Keep your passport and phone on you or in a locker, never loose on the training floor.
  • Before a departure, use the grooming hub, which has a vanity area with hairdryers and products. Check with the team whether towels are provided and what the showers are like.

Crew between duties

Cabin and flight-deck crew live by rosters, and a rest day in Abu Dhabi can be the best training day of the week. Plan it around how you feel after the last duty, not around the time on your watch.

  • After a long or overnight duty, keep the first session easy, with light cardio and some mobility work.
  • Save heavier lifting for the middle of a run of rest days.
  • If your tier or pass includes the recovery suite, the sauna, steam room and ice bath are there after training, though anyone pregnant or with a heart condition should get a doctor's view before using them.
  • Crew based in Abu Dhabi are residents with shifting rosters, so ask which tier copes with irregular weeks.

Visiting crew on a short layover should ask whether a day pass is available and what it covers. Because passes change over time, the team confirms whether one exists for your dates, its price and what it includes.

Salam Street and the drive from the airport

The mapped route from the airport follows Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street (Salam Street) onto the island and ends at AD HUB, where parking is free and on site and a lift goes up to Level 4. The route box assumes a car. If you will not have one, settle how you will get there and back before you count on a session.

DaysOpening hours
Saturday to Thursday06:00–23:00
Friday09:00–22:00

Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.

The club keeps early-morning and late-evening hours, cut shorter on Fridays. On a departure day, work back from the time your airline wants you at the airport, and give the drive a generous margin.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Is RPM at Zayed International Airport?

No. The only RPM club is on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, on the main island, a mainland commute from the airport, as the figures in the route box show.

Can I train during a layover?

Only if your ticket and entry status allow you to leave the airport, the gap is long, and you keep every margin your airline sets. For most connections the honest answer is no.

Can I leave my suitcase at the club while I train?

RPM does not publish whether large luggage fits in the keypad lockers, so ask the team before you bring a case. Dropping it at your hotel first is the simpler plan.

Is there a pass for a single day?

Possibly. Message the team before you fly and ask if a day pass is on offer for your date. Pass terms change, so the team confirms price and inclusions before you travel.

Can I get ready for a flight at the club?

Yes, within what the club has: keypad lockers in the changing area and a vanity area with hairdryers and products in the grooming hub. Ask about showers and towels before you rely on them.
