Muscle gain runs on variety and repetition
A muscle-gain plan usually trains each muscle group with more than one exercise and comes back to it every week. That asks two things of a gym. It needs variety, meaning different angles and tools for the same muscle. It also needs access, meaning those tools are open at your hour week after week.
The World Health Organization's 2020 guidelines define muscle-strengthening activity as exercise that increases muscle strength, power, endurance and mass. They advise adults to work all the major muscle groups, which they list as the legs, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms, on two or more days a week. A physique split covers the same list in finer detail. For the club as a whole, see RPM's gym overview.
Which equipment trains which body part
Use this to check a floor against your split. The last column is your fallback when the first choice is taken.
| Muscle group | Free weights | Machines | Cables | Swap when it is busy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chest | Bench press, incline dumbbell press | Chest press, pec deck | Cable fly at two heights | Dumbbells on any open bench |
| Upper back | Dumbbell row, barbell row | Seated row machine | Seated cable row, face pull | Dumbbell row on a bench |
| Lats | Pull-up, dumbbell pullover | Pulldown machine | Lat pulldown, straight bar pulldown | Cable pulldown, one arm at a time |
| Shoulders | Overhead press, lateral raise | Shoulder press machine | Cable lateral raise, reverse fly | Dumbbell raises anywhere |
| Arms | Curls, skull crushers | Curl or dip machine | Rope pushdown, cable curl | Curls with a fixed barbell |
| Quads | Squat, split squat, box step | Leg press, leg extension | Rarely the main tool | Leg press if the rack is taken |
| Hamstrings and glutes | Romanian deadlift, hip thrust | Leg curl, glute machine | Cable pull-through, kickback | Dumbbell Romanian deadlift |
| Calves | Standing raise holding dumbbells | Calf raise on the leg press | Rarely used | Raises on one leg from a step box |
| Abdomen | Loaded carries, weighted sit-ups | Ab crunch machine | Cable crunch, woodchop | Floor work on a mat |
Not every gym has every machine listed. Ask to see the ones your split relies on.
A row with options in three columns is well covered. A row with one option is a gap you will feel at peak hour. For why most plans use both tools, read free weights or machines.
Ten minutes on the floor to find the gaps
- Bring your split on paper or on your phone.
- For each muscle group, find two options, one machine or cable and one free weight.
- Look at the cable attachments. A rope, a straight bar, single handles and an ankle strap cover most isolation work.
- Sit in two machines you use often and check that the seat and pads fit your height.
- Check that an adjustable bench locks firmly at an incline.
- Look at the dumbbell jumps in your working range, not only the heaviest pair.
Do this at your usual training hour. A cable tower that looks generous at noon can have a queue on every station after office hours.
Turning up beats the perfect machine
Physique goals are usually measured in months, so the gym you reach four times a week will do more for you than a better-equipped one you reach twice. In Abu Dhabi that often comes down to the evening drive home and to whether the gym's hours fit early starts or late finishes.
- Pick a gym that sits on a road you use daily, so training never needs its own trip.
- Train at the same hours each week, so you learn when your stations are open.
- Plan a shorter maintenance split for Ramadan and summer travel instead of stopping.
- Log every set, so you can see whether a machine swap held your progress.
Coaching and food for a physique goal
A coach is most useful at two points: setting up a split that covers every row of the table, and reviewing it when the log stalls. At RPM, two Mixed-section coaches suit a physique goal: Amer Khalil, whose roster role is bodybuilding and strength, and Awab Elsheikh, listed for physique work and fitness classes. In the Ladies section, Coach Maria is the strength and conditioning coach. Booking and session formats are on the personal training page.
What you eat is part of a muscle-gain plan too. A coach can talk about general habits, but an eating plan belongs with a registered dietitian or your doctor, especially if you have a medical condition.
How RPM's floor covers the table
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. Its floor photos show plate-loaded machines including a leg press and a pulldown, multi-station cable towers, benches, plates, dumbbells, fixed-weight barbells and a squat rack with colour bumper plates. The functional area adds kettlebells and step boxes. That covers the back, chest, quad and cable rows of the table on paper.
RPM does not publish a full machine list. Ask on a free guided tour whether there is a leg curl, a pec deck and a calf machine if your split depends on them, and how heavy the dumbbells go. The women-only Ladies section has its own strength equipment, so women should ask which machines sit there. Men train in the Mixed section only. If machines are your main tool, the guide for machine trainers goes further.

Questions, answered.
How many days a week does a muscle-gain split need?
WHO's baseline for adults is muscle-strengthening work for all major muscle groups on two or more days a week. Many physique splits run three to five days, and the more days you plan, the more the gym's hours and location have to fit your week.
Should I change exercises every few weeks?
Keep the main exercises long enough to see the weights climb in your log. Swap an accessory when it stops progressing or its station is always taken.
Do I need a personal trainer to build muscle?
No, but a few sessions at the start help with machine set-up and a split that covers every muscle group. Many people then train alone and book a review when progress stalls.
Can women train for muscle gain in the Ladies section alone?
Often, if the section has a machine or cable option for each row of the table. Ask which ones it holds, and check whether your tier also covers the Mixed section.
