Why the semester is your unit
A student's week rarely holds still. The timetable shifts during add and drop, deadlines bunch up around mid-terms, and the breaks empty your calendar for weeks. A routine written in week one seldom survives to finals, and a membership bought on impulse can keep renewing through a summer at home.
So plan in semesters. Each one has a shape you can predict, and once you see it, you can decide how often to train and which membership terms you need. Read RPM's membership tiers with two questions in mind: what is the shortest term on offer, and what happens to it during the breaks?
The semester calendar plan
Put in your own dates from your university's academic calendar. Most Abu Dhabi universities run a fall semester from late August or September to December and a spring semester from January to around May, but each institution sets its own dates.
| Weeks 1–3 | Weeks 4–7 | Mid-terms | Weeks 9–13 | Finals, then the break | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your timetable | Moving during add and drop | Settled, first assignments due | Exams on top of lectures | Projects and lab reports | Exam slots, then no classes |
| Sessions a week | Two, at different hours | Three, fixed to your gaps | Two short ones | Three, one kept short | Two in exams, three or four after |
| Session length | About 45 minutes | 45 to 60 minutes | 25 to 30 minutes | About 45 minutes | Short, then longer |
| What you train | The floor and the main lifts | A routine you can repeat | The habit, nothing new | Push the main lifts on | Stress relief, then a new block |
| Money move | Short access until the timetable settles | A term that matches your weeks on campus | Do not cancel over one hard month | Check renewal dates before the break | Freeze or stop if you fly home |
Start at the lower end if you are new to training, and add sessions gradually. WHO's 2020 guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week for adults, which is why the plan never drops below two sessions.
Training in the gaps between lectures
A gap in your timetable only becomes a training slot if the trip there and back fits inside it, with room to change. Each kind of gap suits something different:
- A morning before a late lecture: often the most dependable slot, because nothing earlier can overrun into it.
- A long midday gap: works when the gym sits between campus and home, or the campus has its own gym.
- The hour after your last class: good if you drive home anyway, though traffic builds as offices empty.
- A gap of an hour or so: rarely enough for a gym trip. Walk, stretch or study, and train later.
When you register for courses, bunch lectures so that one longer block stays open on two or three days. That does more for your training than any membership.
No car? Getting to a gym without a car covers taxis, ride-hailing, the bus and the Hafilat card, and the cost of the trip belongs in your budget.
A student budget, with placeholders
RPM does not publish prices online, so this sum uses letters for the quotes you are given: V for a single visit, M for a month of membership, J for any fee to rejoin after a break, and A for a longer term that allows a freeze for a fee F.
| Way to pay | Cost for one semester | Makes sense when |
|---|---|---|
| Campus sports facilities | Check what your fees already cover | It has what your plan needs, at hours that fit |
| Paying per visit | V × the visits you make | You train less than once a week, or are still testing a gym |
| Monthly, stopping for breaks | M × months on campus, plus J each time you restart | You fly home for every break |
| A longer term with a freeze | A, plus F for each freeze | You stay in Abu Dhabi most of the year and train steadily |
Divide each total by the sessions you will really make. Three a week across a fifteen-week semester is about 45 visits, closer to 40 once exams take a few. The lowest cost per visit, on terms you can live with, wins.
Ask whether the gym has a student rate, but do not assume one exists, and get freeze and cancellation terms in writing. If single visits might come out cheaper, paying per visit or joining runs that comparison in more depth.
Exam weeks: shorter sessions, not none
Exams are when many students stop training, yet a short session does the most for a day at a desk. Keep it small:
- Five minutes on a bike to warm up.
- Two exercises back to back, such as a squat and a row, for three or four rounds.
- A few minutes of easy movement, then straight home.
- Train after an exam, not the evening before one, when sleep matters more.
- Leave new exercises and heavy attempts until finals are over.
If stress or poor sleep carries on after exams end, talk to your university's counselling or health service, or to a doctor.
Breaks and summer: three ways to spend them
The breaks decide what a membership is worth to you, and most students fall into one of three patterns.
- Flying home: stop or freeze before you leave, take a bodyweight plan and keep the first week back easy. Ask how much notice a freeze needs, because flights home are often booked before exams end.
- Staying in Abu Dhabi: from May to September the heat pushes training indoors, and an empty calendar suits a coached block or a new lift. Train early or late, when the trip is less hot.
- Taking a summer course: a lighter timetable leaves room for three or four sessions a week.
If Ramadan falls during term, many students who fast move training to after iftar, and gym hours often change for the month, so check them before it starts.
How RPM measures up for a student
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking at AD HUB and a lift up to the floor. Early-morning and late-evening opening, with shorter Friday hours, leaves room for a session before a late lecture or after an evening class.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
Women can train in the women-only Ladies section, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio. Men train in the Mixed section. Floor, the training-floor tier, is the one most students ask about first, and Engine adds coached programming.
Where it may not fit: if your campus and your home are both on the mainland, the trip may swallow your timetable gaps, and a gym on that side of the bridge, or the campus gym, may suit you better. Ask for prices and the shortest term, and book a free guided tour at your training hour.

Questions, answered.
Is there a student rate at RPM?
RPM does not publish prices or rates online. Ask the team whether a student rate exists, and compare the answer with your campus facilities and with paying per visit.
Should I just use the university gym?
If it has the equipment your plan needs at the hours you have spare, it is the cheapest place to start. A full gym makes sense once you want heavier lifting, coaching, a women-only section or longer hours.
I have never trained. Where do I start?
Start with two sessions a week and learn a few main movements first. The complete beginners' guide sets out a first visit and a first month.
Can a friend from my course train with me?
Yes, and a partner makes a session harder to skip. If one of you is a man and the other a woman, check the sections: men train in RPM's Mixed section, and women can use the Mixed section, the Ladies section or both, depending on the tier.
