Why a first gym loses people in month one
People who have never trained rarely quit because the workouts are too hard. They quit because each visit asks them to solve something new: where to change, which machine to use, how heavy to go, whether they are in someone's way. Every unsolved question makes the next visit less likely. A good first gym answers those questions early.
So judge a gym by what happens around the training, not by the length of its equipment list. That holds for any club you visit, RPM's single club in Al Manhal included. The timeline in the next section shows what should happen between your first visit and day 30, and what the gym should be giving you at each point.
Which gym suits first-time gym members in Abu Dhabi?
The one you will still be visiting in week five. In practice that means a gym you can tour before paying, on a route you already drive, with a calm hour you can make and someone who will show you the basics. Equipment range matters later. In the first month, a clear start matters more.
From first visit to day 30: a timeline
Space these steps across four or five weeks. If a step goes badly, repeat it before moving on.
| When | What you do | What the gym should give you | You are ready to move on when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before you pay | Tour the gym at the hour you would really train. Ask what a newcomer's first week looks like | A walk-through with no pressure to sign that day | You can picture the route from the car park to the first machine |
| Visit 1 | Thirty minutes in one area: a short warm-up on a bike, then three or four machines | Someone to show you seat height and range on each machine, through an induction or a coach | You know what visit 2 will be |
| Visits 2 to 4 | The same short plan twice a week. Write down every weight and seat setting | People on the floor you can ask, and a written plan instead of a new workout every time | You set up every machine without help |
| Around visit 6 | The first dip in motivation often arrives about now. Keep both sessions, even if one is short | Ideally someone who expects you: a coach, a class or a training partner | You trained in a busy week anyway |
| Week 4 | Add one dumbbell exercise or a third short session, not both | A coach or staff member willing to check how you move | The weights in your log have crept up and nothing hurts |
| Day 30 | Read back through your log and decide what month two looks like | Straight advice on your tier and on whether to add coaching | You want to go back next week |
If you have a medical condition or an old injury, speak to your doctor before you start, and tell whoever coaches you what they said.
Gym words you will hear in week one
Half the strangeness of a first gym is the vocabulary. These are the words people will use around you, and the ones you will find on any plan a coach writes.
| Word | What it means | Where you will meet it |
|---|---|---|
| Rep | One lift of the weight, from start to finish | Every plan. "3 x 10" means three sets of ten reps |
| Set | A group of reps done without a break | Your log, and the rest you take between sets |
| Working weight | The load for your main sets, after any lighter warm-up sets | Your log, so you can add to it next time |
| Reps in reserve | How many more reps you could have done. Beginner plans often stop with two or three left | Plans written by coaches, and many training apps |
| Plate-loaded | A machine you load with weight plates, such as a leg press | The strength floor |
| Compound exercise | A movement that works several joints at once, such as a squat or a row | Most beginner plans open with a few of these |
| Induction | A short introduction to the equipment and house rules. It is not personal training | Your first week, if the gym offers one. Ask |
| Functional area | Open floor with kit such as a sled, kettlebells and ropes | Conditioning sessions and some classes |
For what happens at reception, in the changing area and during an induction, read your first day at a new gym.
Planning the month around an Abu Dhabi week
- Pick two fixed slots before you join, such as Sunday evening and Wednesday morning, and guard them like meetings. The Saturday–Sunday weekend makes one weekend slot easy to keep.
- Fridays are shorter at many gyms, and the hours around Friday prayers change who is in. Check before you plan a Friday session.
- From May to September, the walk in from a car park in the afternoon heat can tire you before you start. Bring water and settle for a few minutes before the warm-up.
- In Ramadan, many people move training to after iftar and keep it short. If your first month falls in Ramadan, two short sessions a week is plenty.
- School terms change the traffic and the busy hours at most gyms. If you do the school run, the hour after drop-off is often calmer, but check rather than assume.
RPM's opening hours are below: early-morning and late-evening opening, with shorter hours on Fridays.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
What RPM offers a first-timer, and what to check
RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking and a lift up. Men and women both use the Mixed section. The Ladies section is for women only, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio, and female coaches on the roster work there. If you are starting from zero, you could ask about Taha Ragab, the general fitness coach in the Mixed section.
- Book the free guided tour at the hour you plan to train. It is a walk-through, not a workout, so ask how a first session or an introduction to the equipment can be arranged.
- Ask which tier fits a first month. Floor covers the training floor, Engine adds coached programming and Atelier is built around one-to-one coaching. Inclusions and prices are confirmed on enquiry.
- Women can ask whether their tier covers the Ladies section, the Mixed section or both.
Where RPM may not fit: prices are not published online, so you will have to ask. There is no childcare on record. And if your daily route never passes Al Manhal, a gym on that route may be easier to keep visiting in month one. If you are torn between a coach and going it alone, starting alone or with a coach compares the two for a first month.
Questions, answered.
How long until the gym stops feeling strange?
For most people, within the first few weeks, once the route and a handful of machines are familiar. Keeping the same hour and the same corner of the floor speeds that up.
What if I miss a week in the first month?
Go back to the step you were on, not to the start. One missed week costs you little. Missing the next one too is what breaks the habit, so book your next session before the day is out.
Do I need to buy anything before my first session?
Comfortable clothes and trainers with a flat, stable sole will do, plus a water bottle. Leave supplements and gadgets for later, and ask a doctor or registered dietitian before you take any supplement.
I trained years ago. Does this apply to me?
Partly. You will know the words and the movements, but you may be tempted to start too heavy. The guide for people returning after a long break has an eight-week ramp for exactly that.
