Structure means a plan plus a person
Structured coaching has two halves. The plan says what you do each week and why, and it exists on paper before you start. The person checks that you did it, watches how it went and adjusts the following week. Many people buy one half and expect both: a programme with nobody checking, or sessions with a coach who improvises a new workout every time.
Decide that you want both halves before you compare gyms, then ask each gym how it delivers them. RPM's personal training runs with coaches in both sections, and the questions further down work for any gym.
A 12-week coached block, phase by phase
Coaches plan blocks in different ways, so read this as a common shape rather than a rule. What matters is that every phase has a stated aim and a checkpoint you both agree on.
| Weeks | Phase | What the coach does | What you do | Checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Assessment and baseline | Asks about your goal and training history, checks for health issues, watches how you move and records starting numbers | Answers honestly, including how many sessions you can really manage | A written block you can read from week 1 to week 12 |
| 2 to 4 | Foundation | Teaches or tidies the main lifts at moderate loads and builds the logging habit | Trains on the agreed days and logs every set | Technique holds on every rep at the planned loads |
| 5 | Easier week | Cuts the volume so you start the next phase fresh | Trains as planned, even though it feels light | Energy and sleep are back to normal |
| 6 to 9 | Build | Adds load or sets week by week and checks recovery each session | Reports sleep, soreness and missed sessions | Main lifts heavier than in week 2, with form intact |
| 10 | Easier week | Lowers the load again before the final push | Keeps the routine going | You want to train hard again |
| 11 | Focus | Narrows the work to the goal of the block | Gives each session full effort | Ready to retest |
| 12 | Retest and review | Repeats the week 1 tests and drafts the next block | Compares the numbers and says what worked | A plan for the next 12 weeks, or for training alone |
If you have a medical condition or an injury, tell the coach in week 1 and follow your doctor's advice on what to avoid.
Accountability that does not rely on willpower
- Sessions booked for the whole block on fixed days, not arranged week to week.
- A clear rule for missed sessions: how much notice you give, and whether a session can be moved.
- A check on the sessions you do alone, through your log or an app the coach can see.
- A short message from the coach when you miss, and from you when something changes.
- A review date in week 12 that you have both agreed.
Get the cancellation and rescheduling terms in writing. They decide whether the block survives a busy month.
Placing a block in the Abu Dhabi year
| Starting in | What can interrupt it | How to plan around it |
|---|---|---|
| September | The return from summer and the start of the school run | A good time for a full block. Book your hours early |
| January | Winter visitors and trips | Put the easier weeks where your known trips fall |
| The weeks before Ramadan | Fasting changes your energy and when you can train | Make Ramadan the easier phase, or run a shorter block that only maintains |
| May or June | Summer travel cuts the block short | Run eight weeks that end before you fly, with a short plan to take away |
Questions that show a coach plans in blocks
- Roughly what will my week 6 look like, before I start week 1?
- Which numbers will you test in week 1 and again in week 12?
- Where are the easier weeks, and why there?
- What happens to the plan if I lose a week to work or illness?
- How do you check the sessions I do on my own?
A coach who answers these without hesitating already plans in blocks. For a fuller test of coaching quality, read how to compare gym coaching.
Structured coaching at RPM
RPM's coaches work across the Mixed section and the women-only Ladies section. The roster includes Amer Khalil, a bodybuilding and strength coach in the Mixed section, and Coach Maria, the strength and conditioning coach in the Ladies section. Asma Jamousi Zadeh, also in the Ladies section, is listed for HYROX training. Ask any coach about their background directly.
- Engine adds coached programming. Ask how often the plan is reviewed and how contact works between sessions.
- Atelier is built around one-to-one coaching. Ask how many sessions a week it includes.
- Inclusions, prices and package terms are confirmed on enquiry. Ask for them in writing.
- Ask to meet the coach on the free guided tour before you commit to a block.
If weekly contact is more than you need, occasional coaching covers check-ins every few weeks. To see how a block's results should be recorded, read measuring fitness progress.
Questions, answered.
Is 12 weeks long enough?
It is long enough to learn or tidy the main lifts and see whether the numbers in your log move. Results differ from person to person, and no coach should promise a particular outcome.
How many coached sessions a week does a block need?
Many blocks pair one to three coached sessions with sessions on your own. Fewer coached sessions can work if the coach reviews your log every week.
Can I pause a block if I travel?
Ask before you buy. Some coaches move an easier week to cover a trip, while others restart the phase when you return.
Should my coach write a meal plan too?
Coaches can talk about everyday habits, but a meal plan belongs with a registered dietitian, especially if you have a medical condition.
Do I need coaching included in my membership?
Not always. Membership with coaching or without works through when a bundled tier makes sense.
