Five things private can mean
Gyms use the word private loosely. One means a women-only room, another means a corner with a screen, a third means booking a coach. Before you compare clubs, decide which of these you actually need.
- Who can see you while you train, including through glass and open doors.
- Who can walk in: other members, male staff, cleaners or contractors.
- Who can photograph or film you, members and the gym's own marketing team alike.
- Who coaches you, and whether hands-on correction happens only with your agreement.
- Who sees what you share, such as health forms, progress photos and WhatsApp messages.
RPM's private ladies gym page sets out what the club confirms about its women-only section. This guide gives you a way to test any gym, RPM included, against your own idea of private.
The privacy checklist, touchpoint by touchpoint
| Touchpoint | Private should mean | How to check | Walk away if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | You can reach the women's area without lingering in view of a mixed crowd | Walk the route yourself, from the car park to the door of the section | Staff cannot tell you how women get in, or will not show you |
| Training floor | No view in from shared corridors, windows or a mixed floor | Stand in the shared areas and look back towards the section | Glass walls or an open doorway face a busy mixed area |
| Who enters | Men do not walk through while women train, or announce themselves when they must | Ask who cleans and maintains the section, and at what times | Nobody can say who comes in or when |
| Changing area | A changing room and lockers used only by women, not visible when the door opens | Ask which changing room you would use, and open its door from outside | You would change in an area shared with the mixed side |
| Coaching | A female coach if you want one, with corrections by voice unless you agree otherwise | Ask who coaches in the section and how they give cues | The coach is chosen for you and you cannot ask for a woman |
| Photos and filming | A clear rule on phones and no marketing shoots while members train | Ask the house rule and how the gym keeps members out of its social posts | Members film freely and staff shrug when asked |
| Your details | Health forms and progress photos stored securely and seen only by the people who need them | Ask where forms are kept and whether progress photos stay on your own phone | Your information is passed around on group chats |
Score each row on the visit. A gym can be private on the floor and still fall short at the door or in the changing room.
Three privacy profiles, and what each must have
Women who prefer private training rarely need every row above. These profiles are common in Abu Dhabi, and each one points to different must-haves.
| Profile | Usually must have | Can often flex on |
|---|---|---|
| Covers in public and wants to train in lighter clothes | A women-only floor, a women-only changing room, no view in, a strict phone rule | Coach gender, class timetable |
| New to training and does not want an audience | A calm hour, a women-only space or a private coached session | Whether men are elsewhere in the building |
| Known locally, or works in the area, and wants discretion | No marketing photos, careful handling of details, a quiet arrival | Women-only floor, if the hour is quiet |
Write your own must-haves on your phone before touring. Two or three firm ones are easier to test than a long wish list, and they stop a smart reception area from swaying you.
Where women can train privately in Abu Dhabi
Where can women train privately in Abu Dhabi?
There are four broad routes: a women-only section inside a mixed club, a women-only gym or studio, ladies' hours in a shared gym, or one-to-one sessions with a female coach, at a gym or at home. Each covers different rows of the checklist. A women-only section usually gives you more equipment, a standalone women-only club usually keeps men out of the whole building, and ladies' hours only work if they fall when you can train.
If the way in is your main concern, the entrance question walks the route stage by stage. If you are weighing home sessions, see a private ladies gym or training at home.
One-to-one sessions that stay private
Some women hear private training and think of a coached session rather than a room. A one-to-one session is only as private as the place it happens in, so ask these before you book.
- Where exactly will the session run, and who else will be training there at that hour?
- Can you have the same female coach each time, and who covers when she is away?
- Will the coach take progress photos, and if so, on whose phone, and who sees them?
- Can you ask for verbal cues only, with no hands-on correction?
- Can you book an hour when the section is usually quiet?
Putting RPM's Ladies section through the checklist
RPM's one club sits on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. The part that matters here is the Ladies section: a training space kept for women, holding strength and cardio equipment of its own as well as the Pilates studio. The coaches who work in it are women from the club's roster, such as Coach Maria for strength and conditioning and Giana Suleiman Daqnoush for Pilates and aerobic sessions. Men use the Mixed section instead.
Some rows of the checklist depend on details RPM does not publish, so test them yourself on a free guided tour. Ask to see the route into the section and the changing area you would use, ask about the phone and filming rule, and ask how health forms are stored. Then confirm which tier covers the Ladies section. If a female coach is part of your idea of private, the guide to matching a female coach helps you choose one.
Questions, answered.
Is a women-only section private enough if men work in the building?
It can be, if men do not enter the section while women train. Ask who cleans and maintains it, and when.
Can I ask never to appear in a gym's photos?
Yes. Raise it at sign-up, and ask what the gym does to keep members out of its marketing shoots and social media.
Is ladies' hours in a shared gym as private as a women-only section?
During those hours the floor may be, but the slots are fixed and the building is shared the rest of the time. Check the changing area as well as the floor.
What if a gym will not show me the changing room?
Ask why. A women's tour should cover it, and a gym that keeps it out of view is hard to judge on privacy.
