A gym that carries you through the Abu Dhabi summer

For summer, choose a gym where your whole week can happen indoors: a replacement for every outdoor habit, a short and shaded route from the car to the floor, cooling that holds at your hour and opening hours that cover the early and late slots. Then settle the freeze terms for the weeks you will travel, in writing, before you pay. RPM does not publish its freeze terms or cooling details, so ask the team, and visit on a hot day at the hour you train.

Why summer changes what you need from a gym

Between late spring and early autumn, the heat moves most of the city's exercise indoors. The World Health Organization advises against strenuous activity outside during the hottest time of day, and in an Abu Dhabi summer the heat lasts well beyond midday. Runners, cyclists and park regulars start arriving at gyms with habits that used to happen outside.

So a summer gym has to do more than hold weights. It has to replace the outdoor part of your week, get you from the car to the floor without a long walk in the sun, and stay cool when it is full. To see how one club lays this out, start with RPM's Abu Dhabi gym overview, then put every gym on your list through the checks below.

Move each outdoor habit inside

Write down what you normally do outdoors in the cooler months, then find its indoor version at each gym. A missing piece here is an easy reason to stop going in July.

Outdoor habitIndoor versionLook for on your visit
Running on the Corniche or a park trackTreadmillsTreadmills you can get at your hour, with belts that run smoothly
Road cyclingSpin bikes or an upright bikeSeats and handlebars that adjust to you, and whether spin classes book out
Bootcamp or circuits in a parkA functional area with turf, a sled and ropesWhether classes take over the space at your time
A team sport that stops for the summerA strength block to fill the gapA rack and a bench you can get at your hour

If you keep some sessions outside at first light, the hot-weather check before training outdoors reads the conditions first.

The heat between the car and the door

In July the hardest part of a gym visit can be the walk in. A gym on the far side of a large open car park, or one that leaves you climbing a sunlit stairway, will see you less often than one with a covered space and a short route inside. Drive there at your hour on a hot day and note every stretch you spend in the sun.

  • Is the parking covered, underground or open to the sky?
  • How long is the walk from your space to the lift or entrance, and is any of it shaded?
  • If you come by bus or taxi, where does it stop, and how much of the walk is in the open?

Carry water for the drive and the walk. WHO also warns never to leave children or animals in a parked vehicle for any amount of time, because the temperature inside can become dangerous quickly. If your children come along in the holidays, plan where they will be while you train.

Early starts and late finishes

Summer pushes many people to the two ends of the day, before the heat builds and after sunset. Before you join, lay the gym's opening hours over the summer version of your week rather than the winter one. Check the first slot before work, the last one after dinner and the Friday hours, which are often shorter.

Here is how one runner who trains outside from October to April might move her week indoors for the summer.

DaySessionWhen
MondayEasy run on a treadmillEarly, before the office
TuesdayLower-body strengthAfter sunset
ThursdayIntervals on a spin bikeEarly
FridayShort upper-body sessionInside the shorter Friday hours
SaturdayLonger steady run on a treadmillMorning, at an hour she has checked

The other two days are rest or a long incline walk. If one end of the day keeps failing, move that session to the other end rather than dropping it.

Travel months: settle the freeze before you pay

Many residents spend part of July and August abroad, and a membership keeps running while you are away unless the terms let you pause it. Count your away weeks, then put these questions to every gym on your list, in writing.

AskWhy it matters for a summer away
Is there a minimum or maximum freeze length?A short trip may fall below the minimum, and a long one above the maximum
What notice period applies?Holiday plans change late, and a long notice period can catch you out
Is there a freeze fee?A fee can cancel out the point of freezing for a short trip
Does the end date move back by the frozen weeks?Otherwise the weeks you were away are simply lost
Can I freeze more than once a year?Useful if you also travel at Eid or over the winter break

Frequent travellers based in Abu Dhabi have their own guide to idle weeks and short passes. For how summer compares with the rest of the calendar, see joining at different times of year.

Cooling and comfort when the floor is full

Reception is often the coolest spot in a building, so judge the zone where you would actually train. Visit on a hot day at your hour, spend some time there and notice whether it stays comfortable as it fills. The full method is in checking a gym's cooling and air quality.

  • Water refill points beside the training floor
  • Lockers big enough for a kit bag and a change of clothes
  • A changing area where you can get ready for the office: ask whether towels are provided and whether there are showers
  • Somewhere to dry your hair before you head back into the heat

If you keep some sessions outdoors

Some people hold on to one or two outdoor sessions in the early summer, usually at first light. If you do, WHO's advice still applies: avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day, stay in the shade and drink water regularly.

WHO describes heatstroke as a medical emergency, and notes that heat can worsen existing conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. If you have a condition like that, or take regular medication, ask your doctor about exercising in hot weather.

Summer at RPM

RPM Gym is one club in Al Manhal, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex. At AD HUB you park free on site and take the lift up. Whether the bays you would use are covered or shaded is not confirmed, so ask before a July visit.

Indoors, the photos show treadmills, cross-trainers, an upright bike and spin bikes, and the functional area has a turf lane with a sled and battle ropes, plus kettlebells and medicine balls. Women who train in the women-only Ladies section have strength and cardio machines of their own there. RPM does not publish cooling specifications or freeze terms, so ask the team, and book the free guided tour on a hot day at the hour you train. Its usual hours are below.

DaysOpening hours
Saturday to Thursday06:00–23:00
Friday09:00–22:00

Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Is a treadmill a fair swap for running outside?

For most runners it is a practical way to keep running when the heat rules out the road. It feels different underfoot, so give yourself a few sessions to settle into a pace.

Can my children come to the gym with me in the school holidays?

Rules differ, and many gyms keep children off the main floor. Ask about supervised youth sessions instead. RPM's youth sessions are supervised by a coach and need a parent or guardian to arrange and approve them, so ask the team which ages each one takes.

What should I keep in my gym bag in summer?

A water bottle, a spare shirt for the walk back to the car and whatever you need to get ready for work afterwards. Ask whether towels are provided before you rely on them.
