The race sets the checklist
HYROX describes its race as eight runs of one kilometre, each followed by a functional workout station, with the same format at every race around the world and each event held indoors in a large exhibition hall. A training gym therefore has to give you two things: the stations, and somewhere to run hard between them.
Some gyms present themselves as official HYROX partners, while others, RPM among them, offer HYROX-style training independently. The label matters less than the kit, the space and the coaching. RPM's HYROX page sets out the race format and how its sessions are approached.
Station by station: what the gym must have
The stations in race order, as HYROX lists them. Sled work has its own guide to choosing sled training space, and rowers have one on choosing a gym with rowing machines.
| Station | What the gym needs | Check |
|---|---|---|
| SkiErg | At least one ski machine | Whether one is ever available at your hour |
| Sled push | A sled and a lane long enough to build speed | Surface and loading, plus whether the lane can be booked |
| Sled pull | A rope or harness for pulling | Room behind you to walk the rope back |
| Burpee broad jumps | Clear floor in a straight line | Matting or turf you can land on repeatedly |
| Rowing | Rowers in working order | Monitors that show split and distance |
| Farmers carry | Handles or heavy kettlebells | A carry route that does not cut through the weights area |
| Sandbag lunges | Sandbags across a range of weights | A lane where lunging is allowed |
| Wall balls | Medicine balls and a marked target | Ceiling height, and whether throwing is allowed at busy times |
Where you will do the running
Eight kilometres of running sit between the stations, so a gym strong on stations but short on running options leaves a gap. In Abu Dhabi, much of that running moves indoors from May to September, and treadmills become the bottleneck at the after-work peak.
- Enough treadmills that one is open when you need it for intervals.
- A curved, self-powered treadmill if the gym has one, useful for hard efforts.
- Treadmills placed within a short walk of the functional area, so run-to-station practice is realistic.
- An outdoor loop for the cooler months, such as a park or the Corniche, if you prefer real ground underfoot.
Room to string stations together
Single stations build skill, but race fitness comes from linking them under fatigue. That needs space and some goodwill from the gym.
- Ask whether you may set up a short circuit, for example sled, then a run, then wall balls, at quiet times.
- Find out when classes take over the functional zone, so your simulations do not clash with them.
- Check the rules on dropping kit and throwing balls, which differ from gym to gym.
- Ask whether the gym ever runs full or half race simulations for members.
Coaching for race preparation
Plenty of people prepare alone, but a coach helps with the parts that are hard to judge from the inside: pacing the runs, keeping form on the late stations, and planning the weeks back from race day. HYROX lists four divisions, Open, Pro, Doubles and Relay, and Pro uses heavier weights, so a coach can also help you choose where to start.
- Has the coach prepared people for a HYROX-style race, and how did they plan the build-up?
- Will sessions train running straight after a station, rather than each in isolation?
- How would the plan change in Ramadan, when many people train after iftar?
- Is race prep offered in group sessions, one to one, or both?
A trial visit that tells you enough
Go at the hour you would train, in kit. Run hard on a treadmill for a few minutes, walk to the sled, push it, then find the wall-ball target. If you lose time hunting for kit or waiting for a lane, so will every session. Ask to see the SkiErg and rowers in use, and note whether staff know what HYROX is without you explaining it.
HYROX-style training at RPM: the kit to ask about
RPM offers HYROX-style training on its functional floor, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. It is an independent gym, not an official HYROX partner or venue. The functional area has a turf lane with a sled, plus kettlebells and dumbbells, battle ropes, medicine balls and slam balls, step boxes and heavy bags. The training floor photos show treadmills, cross-trainers and spin bikes.
Whether RPM has a SkiErg, rowers, a wall-ball target or sandbags is not confirmed, so ask before you plan full race simulations there. The roster lists Asma Jamousi Zadeh for HYROX training in the women-only Ladies section. Ask how HYROX-style coaching works in the Mixed section, and which tier fits: Engine adds coached programming and Atelier is built around one-to-one coaching, with inclusions confirmed on enquiry. A free guided tour shows you the functional floor at your hour.

Questions, answered.
Can I train for HYROX at a gym without a SkiErg?
You can build general fitness, but the SkiErg is the first station and its pulling rhythm takes practice. If your gym has none, find somewhere to use one regularly before race day.
Do I need an official HYROX gym to enter a race?
Check the entry rules on HYROX's own website. What prepares you is the kit, the running and the coaching, wherever you train.
How long before a race should I start at a new gym?
Leave enough weeks to learn every station and build your running before the hard race-specific work begins. A coach can plan back from your race date.
Is it harder to prepare for HYROX in an Abu Dhabi summer?
The running is the part that changes. From May to September most of it moves indoors, so check the treadmills at your hour, and save outdoor runs for the cooler months.
