Working at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City: which days off are worth a trip to Al Manhal

From Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City on the mainland, RPM in Al Manhal is a mainland commute, so it rarely fits around a shift itself. It suits staff who live on the island, where the club sits at the home end of the drive, and days off that already bring you into central Abu Dhabi. If you live on the mainland and seldom cross onto the island, a gym by home is the better everyday choice.

Where you sleep matters more than where you work

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City's website describes it as a hospital for serious and complex care, and it lies on the mainland side of Abu Dhabi. RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, on the island, with no arrangement with the hospital. The route box calls the drive between the two a mainland commute.

That makes your home address the deciding fact. The general checks for any start point are on using RPM's one club on days away from a mainland shift, and the guide to a gym at the work end or the home end sets out the wider choice.

A fortnight of shifts, marked up for RPM

An invented fortnight for someone living on the island, not the hospital's rota. Mark up your own published rota the same way.

DaysShiftPlan for RPM
First three daysLong day shiftsNo session. The drive back to the island is the last job of the day
Fourth dayOffThe main strength session, late in the morning, then errands in town
Fifth dayOffRest, or the recovery suite if your tier includes it
Sixth to eighth daysNightsNothing at the gym
Ninth dayOff, sleeping after the last nightNothing
Tenth dayOffAn easy session, or a reformer class for women in the Ladies section
Eleventh and twelfth daysDay shifts that finish on timeOne short session on the way home, if you still have energy
Last two daysOffA coached session, then a full rest day

Heat and cold in the recovery suite are not for everyone: anyone pregnant or with a heart condition should get a doctor's view before using them.

That fortnight holds four or five sessions, nearly all on days off, and none squeezed in after a long shift and a mainland drive.

Days off that bring you into the city anyway

If you live on the mainland, a session costs least on trips you already make into central Abu Dhabi. List a normal month of them:

  • Weekend visits to family who live on the island.
  • Appointments, paperwork and government errands in the city.
  • Shopping or a meal out in central Abu Dhabi with friends.
  • Taking children to an activity on the island.

Train first and run the errand second, so an overrun costs a later lunch rather than the workout. If a month throws up fewer than two such trips, RPM is an occasional extra for you, and a gym by home should carry the routine.

The drive in from the hospital

The mapped route from the hospital follows Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Street (E11) and Al Ain Road, then Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street (Airport Road) into Al Manhal. On arrival, AD HUB's free on-site parking and a lift to Level 4 finish the trip.

If you live on the island, check whether your usual drive home already uses these roads. When it does, a stop after a day shift costs the session and a small change of course rather than a second trip. When it does not, keep RPM for days off.

What a day off at RPM can hold

  • A coached session. Personal training is planned around your goal and your schedule, and the Engine and Atelier tiers add coaching to the training floor.
  • A heavier strength floor than many building gyms have: a squat rack with colour bumper plates, fixed barbells, plate-loaded machines and cable towers.
  • For women, the Ladies section, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio, where female coaches on the roster work.

Which sections and facilities each tier covers is confirmed on enquiry, so take the free guided tour on a real day off before deciding.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Does RPM have a club at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, or anywhere on the mainland?

No. RPM has one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal on the island, and no arrangement with the hospital. Its mapped estimates sit in the route box.

I live on the island. Should I train before the drive out or after the drive back?

After, in most cases. An early shift leaves little room for a session first, while after a day shift the club is on your side of the bridges. Test one evening stop before you build a routine around it.

Can colleagues who share a car to the hospital train together?

Yes, when the shifts line up. Men and women train together in the Mixed section, and women can also use the women-only Ladies section if their tier covers it. For a larger group, your employer can ask about corporate arrangements, which are set up per organisation.

Does it make sense to pay for a local gym and RPM together?

For some people: a local gym for short routine sessions, and RPM for a coached session or the Ladies section on a day off. Weigh the cost of both against how often you would really use each.

What should live in the car for a stop on the way home?

Training kit and a change of clothes, plus a separate bag for scrubs or uniform. Add water and a snack. Keypad lockers in the changing area hold your valuables, and the team can tell you whether towels are provided.
