Teachers: one plan for term time, another for the holidays

A teacher's year runs at two speeds, so plan two kinds of training. In term time, hold two or three short sessions straight after school, before the marking starts, and keep them light in assessment weeks. In the holidays, build up gradually, learn a skill with a coach, and keep going through the winter and spring breaks so January is not a restart. Then choose a membership whose freeze and term rules fit the long summer. RPM in Al Manhal fits if your school or home route passes it.

Two speeds in one school year

Term time is fixed and tiring: an early start and a full day on your feet, then marking and planning in the evening, with parents' emails on top. The holidays are the opposite, with whole weeks of open mornings. A plan built for one of them fails in the other, so the teachers who keep training tend to plan both.

The school year also shapes the membership you need. A long summer away, or a term so busy you barely train, changes what a fixed contract is worth to you, so read RPM's membership tiers with the freeze and minimum-term questions in mind.

The term-time and holiday plan

Use the row that matches the week you are in. The calendar section further down explains where the breaks usually fall.

Loads and sets depend on your experience, so take them from a coach or a written programme. If you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before you step up training in the holidays.

Term time: after the bell, before the marking

Straight after school is the most reliable slot for most teachers. The morning starts too early to train first, and once you are home with a pile of books, the evening session rarely happens.

  • Pack the bag the night before and drive from school before you open the inbox again.
  • After a day on your feet, strength work with rests between sets often feels better than long spells of standing cardio. Save the longest cardio for a weekend.
  • Keep one weekend morning as the session that never moves, for weeks when duties or parents' evenings take a weekday.
  • Mark at home, train at the gym. Taking books into the session is how 45 minutes becomes 90.

For a session that fits between the bell and the marking, use the 45-minute template. It pairs exercises so nothing waits.

Holidays: build gradually rather than binge

A break tempts many teachers to jump from two sessions a week to six. WHO's 2020 guidelines suggest increasing the frequency, intensity and duration of activity gradually over time, which is a better guide: add one session a week, not four.

  • Book a short coaching block in the first week of a break, for a technique check and a plan for the term ahead.
  • Train at hours term time never gives you, such as mid-morning, when many gyms are calmer than in the evening.
  • Try what you never have time for in term, such as a class, fitness boxing, or Pilates in the Ladies section if you are a woman.
  • In the last week of the break, step back down to the term pattern so the first week back is not a shock.

From May to September the heat pushes most exercise indoors, so a summer spent in Abu Dhabi suits a gym block better than outdoor running.

The school calendar and your membership

Under the UAE Ministry of Education's calendar for 2026–2027, the school year runs from the end of August to early July, with a mid-term break in October, a winter break from mid-December into early January and a spring break in April. It does not apply to private schools on some other curricula, such as Indian schools, and other private schools may split the mid-term break with their education authority's approval. Check your own school's calendar, and remember that staff often work some days either side of the student dates.

  • Can I freeze for the summer, and for how long? Ask what a freeze costs and how much notice it needs.
  • Does the minimum term make you pay through July and August while you are away?
  • Is there a rate for teachers? Ask, but do not assume one exists.
  • When should I join? The start of a term is a natural moment, and choosing when to join looks at each season in Abu Dhabi.

Where RPM fits a teacher's year

RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with free on-site parking at AD HUB and a lift to the floor. It fits the after-school slot if your school or home route passes Al Manhal, and early-morning and late-evening opening, with shorter Friday hours, leaves plenty of room for holiday sessions.

Women can train in the women-only Ladies section, with its own strength and cardio equipment and the Pilates studio, and men train in the Mixed section. For holiday coaching blocks, Engine adds coached programming and Atelier is built around 1:1 coaching.

Where it may not fit: if your school sits on the other side of the city and home lies in the opposite direction, the after-school window disappears. Prices and freeze terms are confirmed on enquiry, so ask, and book a free guided tour straight after school one day to see the floor at your hour.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Should I train on school days when I'm exhausted?

Do a shorter, lighter version rather than nothing. If the tiredness lasts for weeks, look at sleep and workload first, and see a doctor if it does not lift.

Is it worth joining in June, just before the summer?

If you are staying in Abu Dhabi for the summer, yes, because it is your longest run of open days. If you will be away for most of it, joining as the new term starts usually makes more sense.

How do I keep training in Ramadan during term?

School hours are often shorter in Ramadan, and many people who fast move training to after iftar. Gym hours often change for the month too, so check them before it starts.

Can a group of colleagues join together?

Yes, and a staffroom group can keep each other going after school. If several staff want to join, ask whether a group arrangement exists: RPM's corporate arrangements are tailored per organisation and confirmed on enquiry.
