Sheikh Khalifa Medical City staff: one district, and a session either side of the shift

If you work at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, RPM is close to the campus, since both are in Al Manhal, so the drive is rarely what stops you. The real choice is which side of a shift to train on, and that depends on the session. After a night, go home and sleep, and keep the recovery suite for days off.

Two addresses in Al Manhal

SEHA's page for Sheikh Khalifa Medical City describes it as a government healthcare facility within the SEHA network, and places it in the Al Manhal area of Abu Dhabi. RPM is a separate, independent club on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex, also in Al Manhal, with no arrangement with the hospital or with SEHA.

The route box measures from one point on the campus, its dialysis centre as mapped, so a trip from another building or a flat nearby will differ a little. Either way, getting here is easy. What decides whether you keep training is energy, sleep and which end of the shift you give to the gym. Before you plan around that, read what a gym in your own district still has to prove.

Pick the session first, then the side of the shift

Start with the session you want rather than the rota. Some sessions suit the start of a working day, others only its end, and a few have no place in a shift day at all.

SessionBefore a shiftAfter a shift
Heavy lifting at the squat rackGood before a late start, once you have eatenRarely, since a day on the wards blunts heavy sets
Steady cardio: a bike or the cross-trainerFine at an easy paceOften the better pick: movement without more fatigue
A coached sessionEasier to keep, because nothing has overrun yetRisky, as one late handover costs the slot
Reformer Pilates for women in the Ladies sectionBook it for a day when you start lateOnly when the class leaves room for a shift that overruns
Any session around a night shiftAfter your main sleep, and moderateNone. Go home and sleep first
The recovery suiteNot before work, when you need to arrive alertOn a day off, after a session, if it suits you

This table is training guidance only. It is not medical advice, and if your shifts leave you short of sleep week after week, talk to your doctor.

On a mixed rota a pattern usually settles: strength before late starts and on days off, easy movement after day shifts, nothing straight after nights. Through personal training, a coach can place the heavy days where your rota gives you rest before them.

Why the short drive tempts you after nights

The club opens early, as the hours above show, and the drive from the campus is short. After a night shift that is a trap: a session at that hour comes out of the sleep you need next, and the drive home is done on even less.

  • Have you slept at all in the last day? If not, the session waits.
  • Would you drive across the city right now? If the answer is no, do not drive to the club either.
  • Is another night shift coming tonight? Then the hours before it, once you have slept, are the better window.

The recovery suite after hospital work: check these first

Inside the recovery suite you will find a Finnish sauna and an aroma steam room for heat, and an ice bath for cold. Some staff like heat to unwind on a day off, while others prefer cold. Neither one stands in for sleep, and neither suits everyone.

  • Your doctor: if you are pregnant or have a heart condition, ask before using heat or cold.
  • Your tier: ask the team which tiers or passes include the suite.
  • Your day: keep it for a day off, not for the hour before a shift or the drive home after one.
  • Your plan: use it after a session you came for anyway, rather than as a trip of its own.

From the campus to Level 4

The mapped route finishes on Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street (Airport Road) into AD HUB, with free on-site parking and a lift up to Level 4. The route box gives the mapped estimates, and real journeys take longer than its minimum.

  • Bring a full change of training clothes, and keep your uniform for work.
  • Keypad lockers in the changing area take your badge, phone and keys.
  • Ask the team whether towels are provided, and about showers, before your first visit.
  • Women who want to train among women only can use the Ladies section, which has its own equipment and the Pilates studio, if their tier covers it.

If you also live in Al Manhal, time the trip from home, where day-off sessions start.

// Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Is RPM part of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City or SEHA?

No. RPM is an independent club with a single address, Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal. It is not on the campus, and it has no arrangement with the hospital or with SEHA.

Could I train in a break during a long shift?

Rarely. A break would have to cover the drive both ways, changing twice and the session, and you would go back to work straight after exercising. Most staff train at either end of the shift, or on days off.

Several of us on the same unit want to train together. How does that work?

Men and women can train together in the Mixed section, and women can also use the Ladies section if their tier covers it. For a larger group, your employer can ask about corporate arrangements, which are tailored to each organisation and confirmed on enquiry.

How early can I train before a day shift?

The hours above show when the club opens. Whether a session fits depends on your start time, the handover and the time you need to eat and change. If it would cut into your sleep, move it to a day when you start late.
