A research week has no closing bell
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is a university in Masdar City, on the mainland. This page is for its graduate students and researchers, and the staff around them. It says nothing else about the university. RPM is one club, on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, with no link to MBZUAI, and the route box rates the drive between them a mainland commute.
Office workers plan around a finishing time. Research days do not: an experiment overruns, a training run needs checking, a meeting with a supervisor moves, a deadline swallows a week. A gym plan that assumes you leave at a set hour breaks within a fortnight. The useful question is where a session can sit that the lab cannot reach. For the general checks on any gym trip, read RPM's club as the fixed point in an unpredictable research week.
Where you sleep decides the answer
- You live in or around Masdar City: RPM sits off every route you take. Train where you live, and keep RPM for an occasional planned visit, such as a coached session or a weekend block during a break.
- You live on the island and drive out: RPM is at the home end of your day. A session before you leave, or after you get back, adds a stop rather than a commute.
- You live on the island without a car: settle how you would get to AD HUB and back before relying on it, because the route box assumes driving.
- Your partner works on the island and you share a car: the island end suits both of you, and a shared slot is easier to defend than a solo one.
Only the second and fourth cases make RPM a weekday gym. For everyone else it is a planned trip that needs a clear purpose.
Deadline season and the quiet weeks
Research has its own calendar, with crunch weeks before submissions and slack weeks after them. Plan training by phase rather than by weekday.
| Phase of the work | Realistic training | Where RPM fits, if you live on the island |
|---|---|---|
| Taught courses or a steady research stretch | Two or three sessions a week | One fixed slot at the home end, plus a weekend session |
| The fortnight before a submission | Short sessions, or walks, to protect sleep | Mornings only, if at all. Drop the evening slot |
| The days after a deadline | Easy movement while you recover your sleep | A light session, then the recovery suite if your tier includes it |
| A quiet stretch between projects | Your best chance to build strength | A block of coached sessions, or more frequent visits |
| A conference trip or time away | Bodyweight work wherever you are | Pause, and ask the team what your membership allows |
Heat and cold are on offer in the recovery suite: a Finnish sauna, an aroma steam room and an ice bath. None of it replaces sleep. If you have a heart condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor before using heat or cold.
Long hours at a screen, and what a session can balance
Many researchers spend most of the day seated in front of a monitor. A gym session is a chance to do the opposite: stand, pull, carry and move through a full range. A simple pattern that coaches commonly use for desk-bound people:
- Pulling work for the upper back on the cable towers or the pulldown machine.
- A hip hinge or squat pattern, loaded on the rack or the leg press.
- Loaded carries with dumbbells or kettlebells on the turf lane.
- Mobility work for hips and shoulders at the start.
This is general fitness, not a fix for pain. If something hurts, see a doctor or physiotherapist first. A coach through personal training can turn the pattern into a plan, and a booked session also gives you an appointment the lab has to work around.
| Days | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday to Thursday | 06:00–23:00 |
| Friday | 09:00–22:00 |
Hours can change, for example during Ramadan. Confirm with the team before a late or early visit.
The club opens early and closes late, with shorter Friday hours, but it is not open through the night. If you work into the small hours, a morning session after sleep is the realistic slot.
From Masdar City along Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street
The mapped route from the university follows Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street onto the island and ends on Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street (Airport Road) at AD HUB, which has free on-site parking and a lift to Level 4. At the home end, time the trip from your own door at your real hour.
Book the free guided tour on a normal working day, not a quiet one, so you see the club at your real hour. RPM does not publish prices, and no student or researcher rate is published, so ask the team rather than assume.
Questions, answered.
Is RPM in Masdar City or part of MBZUAI?
Neither. The one RPM club is on Level 4 of AD HUB Sports Complex in Al Manhal, on the island, and it has no link with MBZUAI. From MBZUAI it is a mainland commute, and the route box shows the mapped estimates.
I live in Masdar City. Is RPM worth joining?
Rarely as a daily gym. Train where you live, and look at RPM only for something specific, such as a weekly coached session or the women-only Ladies section.
Can I train after a late night in the lab?
Check the hours block against the time you would arrive. If the club would be closing, sleep first and train the next morning at the home end.
Can women researchers train away from men?
Yes. Women can train in the Ladies section, a women-only area with its own floor and the Pilates studio, where female coaches on the roster work. Whether you can use it depends on your tier.
My lab group wants to train together. Is there anything for groups?
Any arrangement would be between the university and RPM, never through this page. Ask the relevant office to contact the team, since corporate arrangements are tailored to each organisation and confirmed on enquiry.
